The game I am really interested in tonight is Hamline at the Oles. IMO, the team that will be able to control the tempo will win. Hamline will want an uptempo game and Coach Koz will want his team to set a much slower controlled pace. On their home floor, I believe the Oles frequently able to lull their opponents into slower, defensive oriented "ugly" games, which would certainly not favor Hamline. I have a hunch the the Ole's pull this one out tonight. Hamline will need to shoot the 3 to win, as I'm guessing Koz's squad will have a collapsing D to make Hipp work to get decent looks in the paint.

Pops you're right, tempo is absolutely critical in this game.  If the Pipes can get out, push the ball & score 80+ points, things look very good for Hamline. They're 5-1 this season when they top 80 points.  On the other hand, If the Oles' Coach Koz can turn this into wrassling match it favors the Oles.

Another game where they might want to put the pedal to the medal is the Augsburg – Macalester game.  I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this game get into the 80s.  The guards for Mac are turnover prone which tends to lead to easy baskets on the other end.  This in turn causes the Scots to play catch-up ball by stroking the 3.  There will be some good, young talent at the guard spots for both Augsburg & Mac.  The Dawgs have Parker Hines, Andy Seidlitz & David Weber, while the Scots counter with Justin Wasik & Chris Quinn.  I've talked up Justin Wasik and his shooting stroke, but Chris Quinn appears to have all of the necessary tools to be a nice PG in this league.  Plus, he's willing to play some defense which is more than can be said of some of the other young guards.

Whatever happened to GACMAN?

And how could I forget - Gustavus at SJU? I would love to have webcast for this game tonight.

Talk about 2 desperate teams.  Gustavus wants to get the aftertaste of the OT loss to St. Thomas out of their mouths & a 3rd straight OT loss.  But to their credit they're still 4-2 in conference.

However, the Johnnies are attempting to scale a very slippery slope.  Psychologically it's got to be weighing on their minds that they were the first team to lose to Macalester in over 2 years. Plus, they followed that up by laying an egg in Moorhead against a solid Concordia team.  Can the SJU coaches & senior leadership turn the season around for the Johnnies? At 2-4 in conference play they're still not out of it, but it may be difficult to emotionally recover if they lose again tonight.

uh, what?    ???

wow, what a track meet.  on the other side of town the knights and royals engaged in a titanic defensive struggle (offensive ineptitude?) that was the polar opposite of what happened in skoglund.  interesting contrast in games.

AO

Caught the 2nd half of the Cobbs vs Tommies.  Cobbs were up 55-50.  Tommies quickly went on an 8-0 run courtesy of doubling the point guard followed by Healy at the other end.  Once the cobbs were down, they picked up their pace and Fraase took some quick shots.  Nicolai was clutch as usual, and I was also pretty impressed with Hannon.  This is definitely a beatable St. Thomas team, but 35 minutes isn't going to be enough to get it done.

Who'd a thunk it????? :o :o  Oles score 102 to win a track meet 102-96. An Ole victory was the only thing right I got about this game.

I know Pops was sitting there basking in the glory of his STO pick until Hamline made a late, last minute gasp to cut the Oles' huge, double digit lead down to 6 points!  The Pipes gave up 11+ triples?  I only caught a minute here & there, but I don't care how hard you swing the cape, matador defense ain't gonna cut it. ;)

Taps?  Gusties decisively beat down the Johnnies 72-57.

Auggies win a close game over MAC 66-57.  Andy GG with 22 pts.

Carleton narrowly escapes Bethel 60-56.  My man Jonker Kong finally breaks out of his season long slump & scores 13 points along with 8 rebs.

Gusties end their tough luck overtime loss streak with a nice road win in Collegevile, 72-57 over the slumping Johnnies. Starting 3 perimeter players  (Seth A., Dan S. and Phil W.) for the Gusties shoot 18-24 for a trifecta of 16 points apiece. Johnnies now 2-4 and playoff hopes continue to head south :(.

Sounds like Carlies had an ugly win over Bethel, 60-56. It seems Bethel is getting more competitive. They have gone from being non-competitive to giving a couple of good teams a run for their money the past two games. Can they take another step and get a few wins against some of the other lower tier squads ???

right on DP.....there is no i in team and there is no "d" in hamline. ;D
you are also correct that my Ole pick gave me great satisfaction :)

SUMMIT!!!!!

sounds like a wild one at Olaf, altho the CAR will sounds like a pretty good game too. Who was doubting me earlier that SJU would finish behind Cord? If they dont right ship, they could close the year not only out of the playoff field but in 10th place.

I watched the webcast from Concordia.... top-quality video, close to what you find at places like cbssportsline. A good game, well-played by both teams...the Cobbers are solid, and I'd put thme on par with CAR and GAC. In the end, UST's depth and athleticism won out. Excellent game (as usual) from Nicolai and his heir apparent DeBereg looked solid too. Hannon continues to grow in the paint.

Now UST has a 5-day layoff till traveling to Hamline & Mac before hosting the Jhonnies
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

I was checking out the recap of last night's UST-Cord matchup on the cobber site and I learned a lot of interesting things ::)

some highlights:
Quote"St. Thomas wins for the 118th straight time in MIAC play"
"UST is so good they have the best record of any NCAA basketball team in the past three years and are widely regarded as the best team in the history of the MIAC"
"UST ran off five straight points and then score 19 of the final 25 to douse another opponent with a bucket full of confetti"
"The difference in the game came in the play of UST senior guard Tyler Nicolai. Nicolai, the frontrunner for NCAA DIII Player of the Year"
"Nicolai, who along with backcourt mate Alex Healy make up one of the best guard tandems in all of basketball"
"Tommies are now 29-0 when Healy scores at least eight points, has three rebounds and wears block socks."

Yikes!  Is Jim Cella still the SID at Concordia? I'm guessing a student intern wrote the article and Cella didn't get a chance to proof it before it went to the net.   :D

QuoteThe Tommies, who have won five straight MIAC regular-season championships, are starting to resemble the Harlem Globetrotters as they turn the rest of the conference into the Washington Generals during the 2010-11 season. The Tommie All-Stars entered Wednesday's game against the Cobbers unbeaten in their last 18 conference games and hadn't lost in their last 24 regular season games. UST is so good they have the best record of any NCAA basketball team in the past three years and are widely regarded as the best team in the history of the MIAC.

Oh my god... this is disgusting. Besides the grammatical slips, the Tommie worship is unbearable. THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS??

nice find, AO.  funny fluff!   you can't make this stuff up, though i guess SOMEBODY did!  i see on the cob's page that the typos were later edited,  but the hyperboles were left intact.   looks like somebody was having a little 'tongue in cheek' fun with the hoi polloi.   :D
