It took me awhile but I found it.

Oles 78-69 over the Dawgs

4 Oles in double figures.

Wasn't there and no video since it was at SJU, but listened to most of the second half on the radio.

It was 3 games in 1:
First 13 minutes: Carleton 19, SJU 12
Next 15 minutes: SJU 34, Carleton 10
Final 12 minutes: Carleton 30, SJU 10

SJU with a mere 6 FGs in the second half. Rosenow (11), Sutherland (10) and Jonker (10) score 31 of Carleton's 38 points in the second half. Jonker was ginormous down the stretch, hitting a reverse layup, deep two and hook to push Carleton up 4 with under two minutes left.

With GAC's loss, Carleton now two games up for a top-two seed with six left. Tough next two with GAC on Saturday and UST on Wednesday. Should be some fun times at West Gym this next week!

I braved the winter elements & took in the Gustie Piper game last night.  Great ball game if you're a Piper supporter, and not so great if you cast your fortunes with the Gusties.  Similar to the Hamline –UST game, the first half was close until all of a sudden, young freshman wunderkind, Tyler Pannell popped the lid off the game and nailed 3 successive triples.  Huge momentum shift.  Hamline pushed the lead to as many as 16 points before settling in for a halftime score Pipes 45-35.  I'm still not sure why the Gusties would want to play at the same fast pace as Hamline.

In the 2nd half Hamline again would push the lead up to 15-16 points before the Gusties dug in their heels and began to mount a final defensive comeback.  At one point Gustavus had pulled to within 5 points when one of the key moments in the game occurred.  Hamline had nosed back out to a 9 point lead & were up 62 -53. The Gusties played a solid defensive possession and forced the Pipers to call a time out.  After running more time off the clock Hamline's Brandon Rieg hit a triple.  Dan Schmidtknecht & the entire Gustavus bench were screaming that the shot clock had expired.  After the refs huddled together they told the Coach Hanson the play stood.  Personally, I think the scorer's table and refs missed the boat on that call.  Unfortunately for the Gusties there was no video monitor and instant replay to check to see if their decision was correct.  And that was the final straw that broke the Gustie's back.

For the Gusties, Dan Schmidknecht was the best player on the floor 20 pts, 7 assists, 7 rebs, 3 TOs.  IMO, he's the best all around PG in the league.  Tyler Nicolai is a better pure scorer, but Schmidknecht does it all.  Outstanding handles, keeps his head up and is always looking for the open man.  Seth Anderson was solid and scored 13 points, Bobby Johnson had 8 points & 6 rebs, but Phil Wirtjes .and James Hill had miserable games they would just as soon forget about.  Combined they were 2-15 FGA and 10 points.

Hamline was led by the man in the middle - Carl Hipp an MVP type of performance: 23 pts on 11-19 FGA, 1-1 FTA, 15 rebs, and 2 blocks.   Those blocks don't show how many shots he altered on defense and how his presence opened up the perimeter for the Hamline shooters.  Noah Aguirre was solid with 13 pts, 4 assists, & 3 steals. Mike Campbell had a quiet offensive night 9 pts, 7 rebs,4 assists, 2 blocks, 1 steal, but he was a beast on defense.  He had a direct impact on the dismal performance by the Gustie guards.  Then Coach LA rolled the dice and every 5 minutes or so auditioned various guards to fire bombs from the outside.  Pannell, Josh Pratt, Brandon "Big Rig" Rieg, Christian Taber & Sam Gullickson.

Hamline = Very, very dangerous ballclub.  Let's see if they can avoid laying an egg at St. Mary's on Saturday.

For the Gusties, I would think the nightmare loss to Macalester still haunts them. Now they've lost 2 straight games & go to Northfield to play Carleton on Saturday.  Win or lose, they have to regroup & prepare to play UST at home next Wednesday.

Dangerous ball club # 2= St. Olaf.  They're gradually turning me into a believer.

Interesting stats.  St Olaf is currently riding a 4 game winning streak.  During this streak another freshman is quietly making his mark – Connor Gunderson.

St Olaf –Gustavus -W 80-64: Gunderson:  16 pts, 7-9 FGA, 2-3 3FGA, 3 reb, 3 assists, 22 minutes

St Olaf – St. Johns W 70-55: Gunderson:  9 pts, 3-4 FGA, 2-2 3FGA,  3 rebs, 22 minutes

St. Olaf – UST W 73-68: Gunderson: 13 pts, 4-4 FGA, 5-6 FTA, 18 minutes

St. Olaf – Augsburg W 78-69: Gunderson: 10 pts, 5-6 FGA, 14 minutes.

Those are impressive numbers for such limited floor time.  Does Coach Koz have other scoring options he likes bringing off the bench or is this kid a defensive liability? Although Gunderson is a starter, based on his offensive numbers it seems he should be averaging 20+ minutes a game.  Those are some seriously efficient offensive numbers.  I've only seen the Oles play a couple of times & I had no idea he and the rest of the Oles would have this type of season.

The Johnnies had a nice halftime lead over the Knights tonight but did a big fade in the second half. Perhaps they realized a SJU win over Carleton would help their hated rival (UST)'s cause ;)

UST can NEVER count on USJ for anything....right VOJ? :) ;D ;) :) ;D

I caught most of the game on the web. Entered with the Pipes up 12 or 14 in the first half. Good analysis DP, but one thing I'd like to add was the frustrating amount of bad, forced shots the Vipers took.

Leading 16 late in the first half, they had three or four possessions where guards got into the lane and forced bad shots. Then they got three happy early in the second half and that's when GAC got within five. Hamline needs to learn how to play with a lead better. I understand they want to push the tempo, but jacking up bad shots real quickly can see a big lead evaporate fast. Then again, GAC played right into their hands by trying to match the tempo. I wonder if they had slowed it down midway through the second half if they would have won.

BTW, didn't see Hipp pass the ball once out of the post. Just sayin....

It is great to see the squad winning. Keep it going Pipes!

I watched the second half of the Ole webcast last night and was impressed with Gunderson as well. I certainly would have thought he played more minutes based on the impact he seemed to have on the game. I have always liked Koz, but admit watching some of his teams in recent years has been like watching paint dry. This year's team however, is "not you father's Ole team". They are able to play uptempo and have good athleticism. Bobby Fong still takes a lot of ill advised shots, but for the most part, I really like the offensive balance of this squad. Jaryan is also playing a much steadier impressive role at the point. The Oles are my sentimental darkhorse to make some playoff noise this year.

interesting data, drake palmer.  and it's been a while since st. olaf bb and the word 'dangerous' were used in the same sentence.

do you or does anybody on the board know if connor gunderson is related to the legendary running back from the late 60s/early 70s at st. olaf by the name of ole gunderson?    :-\

his parents names are mentioned in his brief bio on the ole bb page, but i see nothing about (maybe) grandpa ole.

if there is a family connection, i would deem that a 'gene advantage' for the youngest 'gun.'

PI - I think it's what is referred to as an equal opportunity offense.  ;D If it's passed into the post it ain't coming out, and if the guards have a glimmer of an opening at 30 feet, they're cutting it loose.   :-*

In Hipp's case he's playing with a very high confidence level.  Two or 3 times I saw him score the other night when I could have sworn he was well defended.  But he would work his way around to the other side of the basket to score, or use that new little funky hook shot he developed.  And who can argue, he was 11-19 the other night, and for the year he's 102-177FGA for a stellar 58%.

On the other hand, the shooters may want to take a little more care with their shots.  As a team Hamline is tied for 10th in the league in 3pt shooting percentage as they average 33.6%.  Statistically their best 3 pt shooters are FY Tyler Pannell & Sam Gullickson. They both average 38.5% from the 3 pt. line.

Split my time watching webcasts of the Northfield games today. Oles continue to roll with a 29 point thrashing of MAC, scoring 90+ points AGAIN :o   Carleton continued to roll pounding the Gusties in the second half for another win. The Knights' looming battle with UST now a bigtime showdown with a share of first place on the line. Pops WILL attend that one ;)

The way the Knights and Oles are playing, my guess is that a team (or 2 ;))from Northfield will be in the MIAC championship game.

SUMMIT!!!!!

In addition to the 2 Pops mentioned, USJ hammered Auggie (Augs shot 28%), Hambone held on for a 68-66 win at SMU and the Cobbers were all over BU.

SO.....Mac, BU & SMU are eliminated from playoff contention... Ham moves into 3rd, Ole & GAC are tied for 4th and Cord moves into the lead for the final playoff spot.  UST & Car have mathematically locked up playoff spots.

After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.
