SUMMIT!!!!!

Frank has it right. USJ needs all kinds of things to fall in place after they lose to UST for them to make the playoffs... the ONLY scenario they'd back in after a loss is if there is a four-way tie for fifth AND Hamline ends up in third, then Gustavus would be the 5 and SJU would be the 6 based on tiebreakers. That's the only way if SJU loses.

If they win, they're No. 5 no matter what.

So a win for UST is doubly sweet-- it clinches at least a tie for their 6th consecutive title AND nearly for certain knocks USJ from playoff contention.  That 6th title would leave them needing 1 more to tie HU's record of 7 in a row (1947 to 1953).

Also, this year's seniors have not lost to the Johnnies. A win Sat and they are one of the few UST classes that cam make that claim. (I dont think there is a USJ class that has gone 8-0 vs. UST...JOhnniePress am I right?)
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

based upon Frank's latest post the necessary results for our playoff hopefuls:

St. John's: Win, or St. Mary's beats Gustavus, Concordia beats Hamline, and Carleton beats St. Olaf.

Augsburg: St. Thomas beats St. John's and Hamline beats Concordia.

Concordia: Win, and St. Thomas beats St. John's, Gustavus beats St. Mary's. or Win, St. Thomas beats St. John's, St. Mary's beats Gustavus and St. Olaf beats Carleton.

Everybody clear?   ???

"our playoff hopefuls"?  I couldn't resist.  ;)  Since the UMAC  tourney is on alternating days with the MIAC tourney next week, I might have to come out & check the semis or finals, if it's in town.

With your karma situation I'm not sure if it matters, but +K anyway.  Nice job on summarizing. I'll have to print out your summary & take it along with me this Saturday.

All I know is, as the 3rd & or 4th seeds, the Pipes and Oles, will want to have some some sports psychiatrists available for any post traumatic game breakdowns that might occur.  ??? :D Talk about your Jekyll & Hyde performances, I don't know if we've ever seen anything like the Gusties & Johnnies this season.  The Johnnies performance reminds me of the nutso act of the Joker in the last Batman movie.  They've got nothing to lose so they're just lettiing it all hang out.  Beware UST.  :o ;)

I'm guessing most, or some of us were former athletes at various levels & every now & then you just get stuck in a really bad slump.  You hate to see anyone go through this kind of stuff, but there's only one way through it, and that's to play through it.  On the other hand, what about the Redbirds? SMU wants to end their season & career on a high note. Tough spot for both the Gusties & Birds.

Something else to consider -- Luther is the top seed in the IIAC tournament and obviously much closer to the cities than other previous hosts such as Buena Vista, Cornell, Loras, etc.

Finally...I have never seen an MIAC coach act more unprofessional than Whitmore's childish antics as the team's returned to the court at the half. Apparently some fan (a gentleman old enough to be the players' grandfather) said something Whitmore found offensive. Rather than following basic coaches's code of conduct and ignoring the heckler, Whitmore and his rabbit ears proceeded to joust verbally with the fan and seemed poised to get physical, if he felt it was needed. It reached a point where the PA announcer had words with Whitmore, which seemed to calm him some.

Talk about a total embarrassment to a fine team.

A UST (no matter what age) fan heckling to the extent it causes a negative reaction from an opposing visiting coach? What a shock ??? ??? ??? Mose, I think you will have to teach the "elderly gentleman" that whining to refs is a much more acceptable characteristic of a Tommie fan ;)

So now for all you heavy Pickem hitters (Im looking right at you big fella, that's right, Pittsburgh Pops, or known as "Willie Stargell" to his close friends & family  :-* )

Who gets the 6th playoff spot?

SJU
AUG
CORD

I'll have think up a suitable winner's prize - a burger & beverage at Groveland Tap for the pregame festivities if the MIAC championship is in town?  Or what's the place called in Northfield - Rathskellers, Rumplestiltskin?

Sorry Mose - Kim's is closed on Sundays.  ;D

Ideas gentlemen.

Although I am not a Johnnie fan, -K to you for gloating Mose ::) ;) Are you SURE you were not the one who riled up Whitmore??? ;D

If UST (over SJU) and Hamline (over Concordia) victories Saturday puts Auggies in the playoffs as has been indicated on earlier posts, I thin k you have to favor Augsburg. This would be ironic, as I think USJ would be the best playoff competitor at this point. +K for the Pops Stargell reference DP :) :)

Alright, after a little more thought here we go.

As we know - UST, CARL, HAM, STO, & somehow GAC are in the playoffs.

Pick who you believe will be the 6th team and pick the total combined points scored in the (2) revised: (3) 6th place implication games on Saturday.

6th team

SJU
AUG
CORD

Total Pts scored

SJU/UST Pts =
CORD/HAM Pts =
GAC/SMU Pts =

Winner has to pick the correct team and in the event of a tiebreaker, the person with the closest combined point total from all 3 games.   And of course, contestants have until Saturday's tipoff to submit their picks.  ;D

I'll go with Augsburg in playoffs and 385 total points scored in UST/SJU + Hamline/Concordia games.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Pops- it wasnt me....I had laryngytis, or I would have been on him all 2nd half after that incident. Besides, the officiating was as brutal as his coaching.

As the father of a UST alum, you should know its not gloating when its Tommie/Johnnie rivalry. I only wish my dad was able to see Saturday's game...I could win some $$ from him.

After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

All games are at the higher seed, so in the unlikely event my squad gets upset the final would not be in the cities.  Should be a nice crowd for the finals, especially if Martin Luther manages to pull off the upset in the semis as the last time they made it to the finals they brought half of their student body to Northwestern.

Playoff Updates.
Brought to you by our sponsors Palmer Productions & CSid.  ;)

From the St. Cloud Times:

...As for St. John's, wow, it could get complicated. But what is simple is this. Win against St. Thomas Saturday and the Johnnies are in the MIAC playoffs for sure. They would be the No. 6 seed if Gustavus can beat St. Mary's and the No. 5 seed if the Gusties lose.

However, it appears if St. John's loses to the Tommies, they might be out. I'll have to look at the scenarios closer in the morning and consult the conference office.

But I don't think the tiebreakers favor the Johnnies in a head-to-head tie with Augsburg or in a three-way tie with the Auggies and Concordia. (Concordia swept Augsburg and split with SJU, so its record would be 3-1 against the other two teams while the Johnnies record would be 2-2 and Augsburg's would be 1-3). It could even be a four-way tie with the Gusties (who are already in for sure) and I'm just not sure right now how that would all shake out.

I will get every possible scenario and what it means up here on Thursday.

Until then, good night everybody.

I would +K if I had the power. Love it!

Will have a little nugget for you later tonight or tomorrow.

AO, it would almost be impossible for Northwestern and Martin Luther to play in the finals since Northwestern is the #1 seed and Martin Luther will almost assuredly be the 4th seed or not even make the playoffs.  Asof now, Martin Luther and St Scholastica are fighting for the 4th playoff spot.  It is almost impossible for Martin Luther to get the 3rd seed.

We had a little fun with Jeremy, the Goat Trophy and spoofing an Old Spice commerical today.

good point.  whoever the opponent is on Saturday, the excitement will be there as the UMAC tourney will have something on the line for the first time since 2004 (last year of the AQ for the NAIA playoffs).
