I feel honored to have won with, for the most part, an outstanding field of contestants :).  Superfan, Miacsuperfan, piperinsider, and Jquentint were all formidable competition.

Unfortunately, I must highlight bottom feeders DP and Miacmaniac and bestow on them the MIAC pickums "toilet bowl" championship for not being within either 10 games or 10% of the leader ??? ??? ;). Perhaps two  should recruit a few less knowledgable new entrants next season to help you improve your position :) ???

I watched Carleton's webcast of their matchup with the Oles yesterday. It was an outstanding exciting game that went back and forth the whole contest. Hats off to both squads, and the potential rematch next Friday would no doubt be another barnburner.

Coach Koz really has a gem in Conner Gunderson, who had an absolutely big time performance as a freshman in a huge rivalry game. Although they lost their poise in overtime to lose, if Jaryan makes both free throws late, the Oles would have prevailed in regulation It was probably best that the game was decided in OT, for although there may have been contact with Jaryan on the foul at the end of regulation, he was in such a poor position to score that many refs would not have bailed him out with a call in that situation. I was happy the game was not determined by that call.

On the Carleton side, there were many clutch performances to help the Knights claw back from being down several times in the game. Jonker was solid throughout and Sutherland hit some absolutely huge treys to keep Carleton within striking distance of St. Olaf when it looked like the Oles were taking command relatively late in the second half.

carltonsid,
++++K to Carleton website for an excellent overall production. In addition to very good video and audio quality, the announcers not only called the game well, but also did a great job of giving updates on the UST/USJ game, which obviously was of interest to league fans watching the Carleton webcast. Although I was getting texted Collegeville updates from a very nervous Tommie fan (any guesses who that was ;), the updates provided on the webcast were much appreciated.

Let the playoffs begin :) :)

Not sure if anyone else was in attendance yesterday, but I witnessed the best-played game between Carleton and St. Olaf I've seen since I've been at Carleton (1997-98). Both teams played at a high level, lots of swings in the game and a great atmosphere at West Gym as it was SRO. In the end, Sutherland and Jonker wouldn't be denied and the Knights prevailed. Both teams were over 100 in terms of offensive efficiency, with Carleton at 124.7 and St. Olaf at 108.4. That's Carleton's highest rating this year except for home game vs. Macalester (142.1) a few weeks ago.

If Sutherland and Jonker were the best players on the floor yesterday, Mr. Gunderson wasn't too far behind, as papahoops said. The kid was sublime. Our radio announcer, who calls a ton of Big 9 contests, felt he was the best player in that conference a year ago and I was thoroughly impressed yesterday. Kid has major game inside and out. I can see why he's one of DP's favs.

With that said, Sutherland imposed his will in the final four minutes and the Knights dodged a bullet when Jaryan missed a FT with one second left after a HORRIBLE bailout call (besides the fact that Jaryan traveled before getting off the shot and then shoved off with his left hand on Sutherland) with one second left gave the Oles a chance to win at the line. In the OT, it just felt like the Knights wanted it more, as a huge offensive rebound by Theisen off a missed FT ended up in a Jonker layup to put the Knights up 5. Neville jacked a one-pass 3 on next possession, and Knights made 8-of-10 FT down stretch to seal win. Great job by our students to show up, support the Knights but keep it clean.

The game, for St. Olaf, has to be eerily reminiscent of Wednesday's loss at Hamline. Nearly double-digit lead with less than five minutes left and couldn't close out either game. Jaryan was solid the entire way, as was Fong, but Fong missed a lob junk on the break in the first half and Jaryan missed a couple of point-blank layups. Once the Knights went small with Theisen at the 4 to match up with Gunderson and slide Biewen over to Fong and Sutherland onto Jaryan, the Knights seemed much better defensively. I think St. Olaf rebounds and takes care of GAC on Wednesday, and if HU beats Concordia, we'll see a Knight-Ole rematch on Friday.

Another thing I wonder is, with UW-River Falls losing twice last week, if the Knights move ahead of the Falcons in terms of NCAA regional rankings and/or Pool C consideration. Of course, just better to win the MIAC's auto bid!

Papehoops, thanks for the props on the broadcast and website. Apologies that our scoreboard interface went down yesterday--hopefully we'll get that figured out for the playoffs.

If the usual scoreboard interface stays down, it can't be too hard to copy what Bethel does to get the score and time posted.

--speaking of Bethel, I caught the very end of Bethel-MAC and Baah tossed in another cold-blooded winner.  Bethel, MAC and St. Mary's are probably the most talented cellar dwellers the MIAC has had in some time.

The most recent bracketology from the pool C board has Carleton getting a pool C bid.  Obviously there are upsets every year in the conference tournaments, making pool C projections hard to rely on until after the AQ's have been dished out, but it's worth noting that Carleton wasn't among the "last four" bids.

Just noted this, too. I have to think the Knights jump UW-River Falls in the regional rankings this week, although my second favorite West Region team is the Falcons so I hope they get in, too. I was worried about Whitman jumping Carleton in the rankings after its big win over No. 1 Whitworth, but then the Missionaries went and lost to "lowly" Pacific (Whitman's description, not mine, but I think Pacific was 3-13 in region or something like that), so no worries there.

Maybe the Knights get in even if they get knocked off in the semis, but I think if they make the finals but don't win they'll be in the field of 61 (doesn't quite have the same ring as "Field of 64," although I guess it's Field of 68 now or whatever).

On another note, while not a fan of the move to Wed-Fri-Sun for the MIAC Playoffs, good thing there are no games tomorrow. Mac, UST and SCU have all canceled classes tomorrow.

Ours pulls the info right from the scoreboard interface wirelessly, so includes running game clock, shot clock and team fouls. I wish it looked a bit better, and we're looking at doing what St. Olaf does in terms of multiple cameras and graphics and such and I think we'll be able to do the same with the scoreboard, but dress it up a bit.

No worries, we have until Friday to figure it out, so it will be up and running by Friday.

And to think I doubted you... your prediction looks absolutely masterful at this point.

I still cannot believe that the talent on SJU couldn't come together to make playoffs.

Also, there are some very good recruiting nuggets on MinnesotaPreps.com right now concerning the MIAC. I would paste it in here, but that would defeat the purpose of paying for content  ;)

What was that comment Mose made the other day about the blind squirrel?  :-*  Due to the high cholesterol count, I may have to parcel out Mose's chicken winnings. ;)

Your comment regarding MN Preps prompted me to go take a look & I will say this. If one of those rumors regarding a certain prep "Diaper Dandy" pans out, the Carleton Knights could very reload with a potential ALL MIAC FY teamer, plus a potential 2-3 year All MIAC type of player.  The kid is that good.

Anyone want to help break down Wednesday's matchups?

I'll start...

No. 3 Hamline vs No. 6 Concordia
- Rematch of Saturday, but don't take too much out of that one. No starter played more than 23 minutes (was Hamline sandbagging to try to get the No. 4 seed to avoid UST?). Obviously the biggest factor is the ability to stop John Frasse. He netted eight in the 77-65 Hamline win and 21 points and 12 rebounds in the Cobbers' 87-76 win. The Pipers need to be patient with the ball in a half-court set if their bread-and-butter fast-break offense doesn't get going. 8-of-30 from downtown is way, way too many threes.

No. 4 St. Olaf vs No. 5 Gustavus
- Got two teams heading in opposite directions. GAC with just 11 wins? The 80-64 Gusties loss in Northfield late in January started a stretch of seven of eight losses (lone win over CON). Looking at the two box scores, STO won the second time when all five starters were active (each was in double figures). In their loss Gunderson only took two shots. The loss of James Hill definitely hurts. Reed Sallstrom and Adam Michel (skinny) will have to give them good minutes.

I think each home teams wins by 10-12 points.
