If I have anything left to say, its that my Pipers are going to show up ready for tonights battle. They have a bad taste in their mouth from the last meeting and have the taste of blood from the first meeting at Hutton.
maybe the bad taste in their mouth is the blood?  ::)

Well if that is the case, What would happen if the Piper squad had Kim's chicken for their pregame dinner?

Good strategy/humor  - the anti-Mose lucky streak dinner.  The Tommie's opposing team eats at Kim before playing the Tommies. +K :-*

As luck would have it, I had some of my people contact some of Mose's people to tell him I would pay off my bet and buy his beloved Kim's chicken tonight. Mose actually declined his pre-game Tommie ritual.  He mumbled sumthing about Lent, or diet, or something.  ;) Board historians, please note and file this event.

Sfan- if you're a Hamline booster, I would recommend what I've told Mose.  Check out Schroeder's Bar & Grill at the intersection of Dale, Como & Front. It's about a 5 minute drive from Hamline. It looks like a dump from the outside, but the restaurant is actually pretty nice & IMO their chicken is far superior to Kim's.

But back to the real reason why we're on this board.  I'd like to dedicate the following old school jam to the Jekyll & Hyde teams still in the playoffs:  ;D

Gustavus & their emotionally draining losing streak, followed by a sweep out the old, negative thoughts & cathartic win over St. Olaf.

Dangerous Hamline and their very streaky outside shooters.  For every good game they have shooting the long ball, the next game the Pipers seem to roll blanks. Will they break that streak tonight?

Well, Hamline, shock away!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!!!! I'm hoping to catch part of it on the webcast while also covering a basketball game out here.

My keys for Hamline:
1. Don't force outside shots. Use Hipp to get the ball into the paint, draw a second defender and find the open man
2. Win the first half. Get the Tommie crowd checking their phones to see whether the party is on Goodrich or Selby
3. Control the tempo - play "Piper" ball

PI- I love Carl Hipp. I think he's a terrific player, & should be a finalist for league MVP,  if not MVP, but...

When was the last time you saw him kick the ball out of the post?  Kick the ball out of the post, pass, or repost? Probably 6th or 7th grade travelling ball.  ;)

I will probably make it to the Ham vs St. Thomas game tonight.  It is going to be very tough for Ham to win, unless Mike can get into the seams and find open shooters or drop it off to Hipp.  I just see St. Thomas outcoaching Hamlnie on every possesion.  Also, AO, you going to make it to the NWC vs UM-Morris game tomorrow?  How do you see that game playing out?

I will actually challenge you on this. I agree he does not pass out very often, mostly due to the fact that he is strictly told to put the ball in the hoop if he touches it. I have been to nearly every Piper game this year and there have been glimpses of hope when Hipp did kick it back out with some regularity and success.

As UMacFan said, I see Fritz making Whitmore look like a fool, so it is going to be up to the players to win this game. When the Pipers won the first time, it was our hot shooting that won the game, not any strategic plan by Whitmore.

Outcoached on every possession?  that's going to be tough to overcome!    I'll take hambone in the upset 74-71.

I'm hoping the NWC-Morris clash looks a lot like their meeting from a couple weeks ago which I did attend (undecided whether I'll attend tomorrow).  Northwestern has the offensive talent to put it away by halftime, but historically they've not played well in the umac tourney.

looks like everyone is weighing in with their hopes, dreams, and opinions . . . . so here is another:

pipes are pipes and vipes are vipes and never the toms will beat, (twice in one year, that is.) it ain't gonna happen; kudos, however, to the vipes on a fine season.   :-*

as for the northfield game, that's a tougher call.  gac vs. olaf gave gusties a big edge on the bench (i am talking coaches, not players.)   gac vs. carlies, the benches are a wash.  this will be arguably the two best coaches in the conference going head to head.  i give the edge to the knights because i think they will have the two best players on the floor, and they are playing in the friendly confines of west gymnasium.   should be a fun game.   :)

Woo wee!  Talk about a Jekyll & Hyde season, Jekyll & Hyde ball game!  :o :o UST comes from 19 points behind to win 78-70.

With about 5 minutes left in the first half, Hamline's lead was whittled down from 19 pts to a 10 pt lead at the half, 45-35.  Tyler Pannell, Christian Taber, & Sam Gullickson combined to shoot approximately 6 -8 from behind the 3 pt line.  The game had all the making of a major upset as it appeared the Tommies were going to get run out of their own gym.

In the 2nd half Jekyll or Hyde took over, I'm not sure which one.  ;)  Tommies outscored the Pipers 42-25.   Much maligned Anders Halvorsen single-handedly outscored the Pipes from behind the arc, as he knocked down two triples to Hamline's 0.  Even non shooting John Nance tossed in a couple of treys, I believe one in each half. Career ball game for Halvorsen.

Big upps to the big man - Carl Hipp 20 & 20.

I'll left others fill in the game details.  I need to calm down from the adrenaline rush!  ;)

Wow, & the Gusties won 70-64 over Carleton.

GAC/CAR recap:

Gusties got thoroughly ouplayed the first 15 minutes of the game. Jonker was dominating in the paint and the Knights gathered at least 10 offensive boards in the first 10 minutes of the game.

The Gusties made a nice run during the last five minutes of the first half as Sutherland had to sit with two fouls.

The Gusties made a critical coaching decision at halftime as they decided they were going to immediately double Jonker when he got the ball on the block and it turned out to be a brilliant move. Jonker had trouble passing out of the double team and when he did get the ball away, his teammates weren't knocking down outside shots.

The Gusties won the game at the free throw line in the second half as they got to the line 21 times in the game compared to only 9 for the Knights. Seth Anderson continued his stellar play down the stretch and the Gusties survived a six or seven minute stretch without Schmidtknecht who committed his fourth foul with about 11 minutes left.

Sunday should be fun. The Gusties' losing streak is pretty much erased from their memories at this point.

Willy says you were up 15 in the first half...GAC about to upset CAR.

Snelling Dreamin' I was about Hamline hosting the MIAC Championships. I mean, Hutton Arena hosting a game for an NCAA bid. I mean, having a chance to beat GAC on the same court we lost 121-59 or something like that when I was in college.

Pinch myself...pinch myself. Pinched. It was all a dream.  :'(

bigtime

gacbacker, your observations on the CAR/GAC game have a lot of validity.  Doubling and triple teaming Jonker was effective, because it altered CAR offensive flow and Sutherland's game was out of sync because of the foul trouble.  CAR needed those shots to fall from outside.

I thought the most important game statistics were at the foul line.  Foul calling determined the change in the flow of the game along with GAC shooting 55.3% for the game and CAR at 41.3%.

In the first half, CAR was 4-9 at the line and GAC was 4-5, but this changed after CAR was up in the first half (1st half:5 calls on CAR, 8 for GAC) .  The biggest factor of the game was that GAC was 12-16 at the line in the second half, while CAR was 0-0 (2nd half: 12 calls on CAR, 6 for GAC).

Hard to overcome that disparity and CAR didn't.

Very nice game between HU and UST tonight. Hipp was a dominant figure in the game with an MVP performance of 23 pts, 21 rebounds, and 3 blocks while clocking 29 minutes. However, I am still greatly troubled by our inability to get him the ball. I would bet that almost half of his shots came from his own offensive rebounds. (Notice he had some nice passes out of the post also!) The game was lost by our 3 point shooting. We failed to convert even one 3pt attempt in the second half and had too many turnovers. Pannell reared his ugly little head shooting 2-8 from outside the arch. Hamline could have easily rode the coattails of Hipp through the game, but decided to use other routes  ??? >:( :'( The only credit I will give to Whitmore was letting Hipp play for more minutes than usual.

Going on a tangent, I was/am embarrassed to be in the MIAC due to the inconsistency of our refs. I am sure some fans will disagree, but I felt there were several calls tonight that were blatantly incorrect. St. Thomas should be ashamed of itself for the level of flopping and acting they did in order to get calls, namely Teddy Archer. Please say someone else noticed he was trying to force more fouls than he was actually trying to play real basketball.

I think you must have mis-understood Willy because I sat right next to him for the entire game and the only leads Gustavus had in the first half were 6-4 early and 34-33 when they got a tip-in just before the first half buzzer.
