Has anybody heard which MIAC school has won the services of 6-9 320 pound center and offensive tackle David Simmet of Hill Murray?  Says he will play both football and basketball, but don't have access to Minnesota Rivals site.  Had interest from Minnesota and Wisconsin as a tackle, but was not offered.

I have a feeling you know the answer, but he's going to St. Thomas.

I actually didn't know, only saw a mention on MinnesotaPreps.com but could not access the members only message board.  Makes sense that he announced today as it is early national signing day for basketball.

By the looks of things, MN-Crookston will again be at the bottom of the NSIC Conference, pretty weak for DII.

Attended the Hamline Crookston game last night and will say that Hamline can still shoot it (16 made 3's). They will be a tough out in conference if they continue to shoot it (see last years UST game). They are however a little undisciplined in that they committed 25 fouls and were repeatedly fouling in the back court as the game wound down which could have let Crookston back in. Oddly or not depending on one's view, Crookston's 1-3-1 seemed to be the only thing that threw the Piper's shooting off.

And then there was one.  Bethel finally posted their roster.  Now the only remaining school that has not published their roster is Concordia. Shame on the Cobbs.  ::)

Back to Arden Hills & the Royals.

*  They finally posted their roster 7 days after they published their season preview.
*  Bethel has a whopping 26 players listed on their current roster.
*  None of the rostered players are FY, yet in the season preview, they tout 5 incoming freshmen.
*  Is Soph Tyler Schmidt from Watertown –Mayer any relation to former Gustie gunner – Robbie Schmidt?

A buddy of mine was at the Pipes- UMN- Crookston game last night.  He thought Crookston had decent talent & size, but never capitalized on the huge size advantage they had on the inside, & couldn't shoot straight from the outside.  The Pipes are the Pipes.  Although they're relatively small, they're quick, athletic, & Coach LA was doing the hockey line type substitutions, so they always had a couple of fresh mad bombers on the floor to jack em up from the outside. Hamline could be a very dangerous team this season.

Let's cut Mr. Cella at Concordia some slack. He's hosting the 8-team NCAA Volleyball Regional Championship this weekend (and doing a great job with audio interviews after practice yesterday and streaming video of the post-match press conferences, along with live video broadcasts of all seven matches over three days) and his football team plays at St. Olaf in a big season finale for both teams. Oh yeah, their women's soccer team is in the NCAA Tourney in California as well. And he has home women's hockey tonight, I believe.

Yeah, that is a lousy basketball program in ANY conference or division.
You have to like the Vipes jackin' up all those threes, though.  Do they ice their elbows at halftime?   ;)

Just checked out a few MIAC rosters and noticed UST and SJU are tied in one category heading into the season with 31 roster spots each. I  know they need guys to fill JV squads, but 31????? Depth in a program is nice, but I think 31 is a bit much. I realize participation is important in D3, but most high schools cut to 18 roster spots, including JV. I can't imagine coaching a practice with that many players.

High schools also have freshman teams.  When we went to scrimmage the Johnnies, they would have the JV play in the fieldhouse.  Bethel is another program that has had their JV practice separately from the varsity.  I can also guarantee you that the bottom 10 of the Johnnies are getting more game experience than the bottom 100 on the Johnnie football team.

Csid- I know you SIDs have gotta stick up for each other, but c'mon...  Jim Cella couldn't have a student worker at least put up the roster in time for the MIAC preview? ::)

From the Preview...

Concordia
Coach: Rich Glas
Career Record: 38-38 (3 seasons at Concordia)
2010-11 Finish: T-6th (14-12 overall, 10-10 MIAC)
Concordia Season Preview
Concordia preview coming soon.

Seriously?!?

Ut oh - Bethel might have a new gunner waiting in the wing.  :)

*Interesting, the coaches have the Dawgs ahead of Carlies.

*Personally I like the Oles over the Tommies.  It's close, but the men in purple have too many question marks at this point. The Oles will have to develop their bench too.

*My buddy who saw Hamline play the other night cautioned that the other MIAC teams better be in excellent physical condition.  The Pipes plan on attacking other teams in waves, so if a team has got a short bench, they could be gassed by the end of the night.

I'm looking forward to the season!

Per Drake's previous post - *My buddy who saw Hamline play the other night cautioned that the other MIAC teams better be in excellent physical condition.  The Pipes plan on attacking other teams in waves, so if a team has got a short bench, they could be gassed by the end of the night.

This means that the Pipes will now have to start playing some defense.  As the saying goes, "You live & die by the three".  Now that MIAC teams have a year to put together defensive schemes for their shooters, where does HU go?  Can they continue their 5-out or dribble drive offense all the time?  They do not have a interior game with Mr Hipp now graduating.

I saw Augsburg's sophomore transfer, Noah Veach, play last season for Trine. He's pretty solid. He could become an important factor for the Auggies.
