The bigger question is what's Leslie doing making an ill-advised diving attempt on a ball that was already out of bounds with less than a minute to go and the game in hand?

I believe what he was doing diving for the ball is called "hustling"....the game was hardly "in hand" not with the opposition having its starting five on the court  and trailing by 12 with 1:18 (at least thats what the play by play on the Carleton website shows as the game reset when he came out). Larger leads have vnaished in less time.

Well, having been in most of the gyms in the MIAC, there's plenty of space on both ends at West Gym. Certainly more than at the one end at Bethel, and I've never heard you complain about that one. That's the first time I've seen a player hit his or her head on that wall in 15+ years of watching games in West Gym. The NCAA rules state a minimum of 6' of space is required on the baseline. I'll run down and measure it on my way out tonight, but I think there's at least 8' of space on each baseline, maybe 10'. It's the same at Saint Mary's, pretty sure, so make sure you rag on the Cards. I'm pretty sure from shooting photos at both Augsburg and CSB that it's the minimum 6', and we should probably take out basket standards at Gus Young Court--not enough room for diving Tommies there, either. Heck, while we're at it let's just move all games involving UST to its home court--we all know the rest of the facilities in the MIAC are sub-par compared to the palatial AARC, and we certainly don't want any of those UST players to have to play in sub-standard conditions offered at places like West Gym.

I didn't say West Gym (one of my favorite venues for watching a game) did not comply with NCAA criteria or standards nor have I ever called it sub-standard. My issue was and still is the failure to put padding on the walls, which is the case in every other gym I have ever been in that has a wall close to the baseline. While the NCAA may not mandate padding concrete/wood walls, common sense does.

Each of the gyms you mentioned that I have been in has padding on the concrete walls (or the standards at Gus Young) where it is possible for a player to crash into it. Putting padding on the walls is common sense, much like a player popping a mouth guard in to protect his/her teeth from harm in the event of contact.

How wanting a common sense protection for all players morphs into moving all games to UST is beyond my simple mind. But I'm glad I provided you with a chance to vent. :) ;D :) ;D

Glad your response conveniently glossed over your shot at calling Carls "being hung up on their academic superiority."

If you were some other poster I wouldn't pay it any attention. You're not. You ask for access to our student-athletes, to our coaches, and to our administrators. That means you should be held to a higher standard. I'm disappointed in your comment. Our athletic department and our institution has given generously to you in your pursuits of writing (and making money off that writing) about this conference, so for you to sit there and call us "hung up," well that doesn't sit well with me.

I've been in this board for a while and around this conference for a while. I've never, ever heard anyone else with any other program in the MIAC complain about that wall or its lack of padding. You and I have spoken at numerous games in West Gym--never heard you mention that once. Maybe you did to someone else-that's fine. You're certainly within your right to bring that up as a concern in this forum.

Where I have a problem--NO A MAJOR PROBLEM--is you saying that Carleton is hung up on its academic superiority. Why don't you come down and hang out with our students for a day or two--you'd know better. But then, you have, which is why it's so disappointing to read those comments from you.

Next time you want to interview one of our coaches or student-athletes, just forget calling. If that's what you think of our institution and our people, you're not welcome as a media member. I won't subject our folks to someone who holds such a low opinion of one of the finest institutions of higher education in the world.

what?  miacmaniac sticking his foot in his mouth?  now there's a scoop!!   ::)  :o ::)  nicely done, mr. wordsworth.  ???

AO

Wouldn't a school that was hung up on its academic superiority be less likely to care about which walls in the gym were padded?  Futhermore, isn't academic superiority preferrable to athletic superiority in the minds of most administrators at MIAC schools?

Patriot

My predictions on tonights tilts:

AUG @ SJU - I'll go with SJU here, especially if Hines is still inactive for AUG. No PG for AUG hurts.
HU @ GAC - have to go with GAC, they're playing well. HU will have to shoot well to win.
UST @ STO - STO is playing well and UST is coming off a tough home loss vs BU. I'll go with STO
CAR @ SMU - Carleton is missing key players but will still pick up a tough road win.
MAC @ CC - CC should win this game.  MAC is not playing well and CC has played well recently.

IMHO, CC, STO, UST, GAC & HU have baselines where the wall is not a factor.  All other gyms (not just MIAC, but every gym) should have padding along the entire baseline wall.  MAC has a couple doors on the east wall where the exposed door knobs could do some real damage.

I'm not sure I've ever seen someone get defensive more quickly than CSID did.  If the wall under the basket isn't padded, it should be.

Gentlemen...might I suggest a trip to the Cannon River to sing Kumbaya?  Carletonsid knows how to land some haymakers though...

Should be a fun 2nd half...Drake is right this will be an interesting race to the finish...

Wow, the Gusties go over the century mark against the Pipers tonight. Seth with 36. Is there any chance he isn't the MVP this year?

^ This.

Every school has their reputation, like it or not. It could be a lot worse for Carleton than being known as the smart school.

Gustavus continues to have Hamline's number. It's just something that never changes.

Impressive road win for Augsburg - holding the Johnnies to 49 points. Andy GG - closed in on another milestone, with 987 career points (10.6 per-game) he has the potential to become just the sixth player in Augsburg men's basketball history to score 1,000 points and pull down 600 rebounds in their career. Nice find for the program with Tyler Schmidt. Boy can he shoot the 3.

Carleton at 3-7 really is in tough water after a tough loss in Winona.

John Nance hits a jumper in the final seconds as UST escapes at STO.

Seth Anderson also has a decent chance of going over 1,000 on Saturday as he currently sits at 974. Seth has a chance to score more points this season than his previous three season's combined. He scored 596 his first three seasons (28, 184 & 384). He already has 378 this year.

Kind of an eye-opening conversation.

We don't ask for a whole lot of access to MIAC people specifically but it sure would be nice to get scores reported on a consistent basis.

It's a lot better than it was 5-6 years ago. I remember sitting up late waiting for a certain school on the north end of Snelling Ave to put something up when they were hosting. My junior year at Hamline (01-02) was the first time the web was updated on a nightly basis for basketball. I remember as the Student SID the process we had to go through to post stuff. I hope the StatCrew program has been updated a bit in the last 10 years.
