How about the outcome tonight? GAC plows over CC and UST beats out Bethel. It is safe to say Bethel needs a win against GAC saturday to receive a playoff berth. What are everyone's predictions? Personally mine are....

GAC over BU
STO over CAR
SJU over CC - (very intriguing matchup)
HAM over MAC
UST over SMU

If this plays out we'll see GAC win the regular season MIAC outright, as well as putting Hamline and SJU in the playoffs. Let the predictions begin....

Just for the sake of argument, I will go with BU, STO, CORD, HAM and UST...putting BU and HAM in the playoffs and UST as the #1 seed.  BU @GAC is far and away the best matchup of the day, if not the week. Both teams need the W, so something's gotta give. Does anyone know the last time Bethel won at GAC?

Big night...no big surprises

Augsburg 63, Carleton   49
St. Thomas   69, Bethel   55
Hamline 72,   Saint Mary's 51
Saint John's 63, Macalester 53
Gustavus 61, Concordia 43

Schedule for Saturday - with projections
Bethel @ Gustavus - GAC
Carleton @ St. Olaf - STO
Concordia @ Saint John's - SJU
Hamline @ Macalester - HAM
Saint Mary's @ St. Thomas - UST

IF BET, HAM AND SJU all win...

1. Head-to-Head (is this used with three teams?
* HAM: BET 1-1, SJU 0-2
* SJU: BET 1-1, HAM 2-0
* BET: HAM 1-1, SJU 1-1

2. Combined results against teams above those tied
* HAM: 2-6
* SJU: 2-6
* BET: Would be 4-4 with a win

So, I believe BET gets in as the No. 5 and then they go back to first tie-breaker as SJU swept HAM so they would get No. 6.

PI- I believe head to head is the first criteria in a 3 way tie. If so, based on the data you present, if all 3 teams win, SJU is the #5 by virtue of the best record in head to head to head. The process restarts to break the tie between BU and HAM. Since they split the head to head, record vs the 5 teams above them is the next criteria. Based on your stats BU is 5-5 and HAM is 2-8, so BU would get the 6 seed and HAM is SOL.

Basically, HAM must beat MAC AND have either SJU or BU lose to get the 6 seed. If HAM wins and both SJU and BU loose, then HAM is the 5-seed. BU holds the tiebreaker over SJU.

Olaf is guaranteed the 3 seed and Auggie is guaranteed the 4. UST needs to beat SMU and have BU  beat GAC to tie for the title and get the #1 seed.

I think  got that right :)

In response to Miacmaniac's question: Does anyone know the last time Bethel won at GAC?

Since the 2003-04 season, Gustavus and Bethel have played 11 times in St. Peter, including three times in the MIAC Playoffs. Gustavus is 9-2 in those games. The last Bethel win at Gus Young Court was in the '06-07 season. In Gustavus' nine wins, they have beaten the Royals by an average margin of 16.7 points per game.

If Cord wins, Bethel doesn't need the W.  Hamline beating Macalester should be the given here, but they're the only team that doesn't control their destiny.   Hamline fans get the unenviable position of rooting for the cobbers to end their 7 game losing streak or hoping Gustavus sees a lot of value in the #1 seed.

I think it's safe to say the Gusties are putting plenty of value in getting the number one seed, given the fact that they haven't won at St. Thomas in a long time, yet they have had some success recently against the Tommies in St. Peter.

thanks GACBacker....sounds like BU has its work cut out for it. I think the "hex" began in the fabulous or infamous (depending on your POV) playoff game of 2003 between BU & GAC. Having talked to many from both sides who were there that day, I still am unsure what I think of the ending of that one.

One thing I noticed about Bethel last night...they are playing some solid defense, something not often said in the past. Also, they actually passed up a number of 3-attempts that, five years ago, they would have gunned. Saturday should be an epic battle.

After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Right on both counts.  From my vantage point behind the Royals student section, the defense on both ends of the floor was tenacious (normal for UST, not always the case with BU).   But last night, the Royals could have used some 'guns' from the past, as their offense was atrocious at times.  Nobody can create a shot when the offense sputters, so the team defense of the Tommies really exposed the Royals weaknesses offensively.  The Royals three point field goal percentage the last two years would also dictate passing up on some threes.  I was surpirsed at the apparent lack of effort put forth by senior Daniel Baah, who appeared not ready to play in a big game.  Fouls hampered him, but he wasn't ready to go.  Taylor Hall's first half was anemic, but he came alive in the final 20 and showed some flashes of greatness.  JD Robinson's shooting held them in the game early, but he didn't sustain as well.

St. Thomas, on the other hand, stepped up and made big shot after big shot.  They paralyzed the Royals with good patience on the offensive end, but often wound up taking difficult shots late in the clock. . . cashing in time after time.  Tengwall and DeBerg threw in some daggers, several from just outside the Arden Hills area code.  I was surprised that the Royals didn't hurt the Toms more on the inside, but credit the Tommie's defense for that.  And how many times did it appear that the Toms were going to turn it over, only to have a great play along the sideline save a possession! :o

All in all it was a fun game to watch, but disappointing if you were looking for the Royals to continue their amazing comeback journey this year.  Saturday at GAC will be a brutal test of their resolve, as the Gusties will be locked and loaded to maintain home court throughout the playoffs!  Hopefully the Gusties video equipment is up and running.  :)

Is Tommy Hannon back in the mix for UST?

He is most likely done. There is an outside chance he may try to play in the playoffs, but thats not looking good, the last I heard.

I've heard a lot of rumors that Hannon will be coming back next year.
