rumors that just wont die......is it true that the Great Drake Palmer will introduce himself (heself?) to nemisis VOJ at tonight's SJU/HAM tussle? Or will he/she "Be like Sid" and watch the games on webcast only and then try to proclaim him/her-self an expert?

Did you mean "Herself"?  I know they taught better writing skills than that at Cretin & Summit.   :)
Oops, and I missed nimisis as well.

All in good time, I'll make it out to my share of games. In the meantime, the webcast offered by the Scots  does allow a trained eye to follow the game quite nicely.  ::) ;D

Well, now that we're offering multiple cameras and HD for Carleton home games, doubt we'll ever see you down in Northfield again! ::)

SUMMIT!!!!!

score 1 for DP on heself being a typo for herself.  (and it nemesis not nimisis or nemisis so we both got that one wrong)

deduct 10 from DP for staying home and watching webcasts when there are 2 live games within 5 miles of his/her house.... 4 if you count the womens' games at SCU & UST

CSID- maybe if you throw in free popcorn then DP will surface  :)

After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Does Carleton have one of those t-shirt guns or slingshots?  Free t-shirts always bring in the crowds in my experience..

Is the announcing crew also getting an upgrade on the webcasts?  Tom Hanneman is probably looking for a gig.  Maybe hunt down columbianmaffia for the color analysis.

Mose - I see I've gotta s-p-e-l-l everything out for you.  I deliberately misspelled and highlighted nemesis to show the error you made in your initial post.  ::)

Csid-You've had that great multiple camera angle look for a couple of years now, but that hasn't prevented me from taking in an annual game or two at charming West gym.  I realize St. Olaf isn't Carleton, but I was just down in Northfield several weeks ago for the Ole – UW-Stevens Point game. When the camera crew remembers to follow the ball, the Oles have got a pretty nice webcast as well.  I just don't really have much appetite for the Knights-Tommies WWE style wrassling matches that usually ensue.   ;D Didn't former Carleton great Zach "The Goose" Johnson lose a tooth in one of those great rivalry games?

Work beckons, but I might make a game time decision to take in the MAC –UST game. If my memory is correct, the gracious Scots don't charge an admission fee. Hopefully with the uptick in their basketball fortunes, they've not changed this policy.  ;)

One of my prized possessions is a Mac t-shirt I paid 5.00 for when they played the last game in the Cage against UST 4-5 (?) years ago. I love that shirt & the old gym.  I understand Mac's need to upgrade their dreadful athletic facilities, but that was one heck of a great place to watch a basketball game. Probably my 2nd and 3rd favorite MIAC gyms are Hamline & Carleton's. For being new, the Fritz court over at UST is nice.

Also my expected order of finish:

1. UST -- too deep, too talented
2. Augsburg-- Kprbaum gives power presence in paint to compliment 3-shooters
3. Carleton-- the cupboard is never bare with Kalland around...short bench hurts
4. Concordia-- size + experience= contender?
5. Gustavus-- never rule a Hanson-coached team out
6. Bethel-- Coulda been a title contender but injuries hurt (bad pun)
7. Hamline-- could be a sleeper, but front line is question mark
8. Macalester-- will be much improved
9. St John's-- it could be a LONG season
10. St. Olaf-- another potential sleeper
11. St Mary's-- wont go winless

The battle for 4-10 will be interesting....a lot of "ifs" and "what ifs" and "could bes"

Player of Year:  1. Hannon; 2. Peters; 3. Sawatzke; 4. Kornbaum (taller one); 5. T Hall

to the NCAAA field: UST, Augsburg and Carleton

Augsburg looked really good tonight against Gustavus. They were bigger and stronger than the Gusties in the post and their three point shooters were hot from outside. The Kornbaum (tall one) and Rasmussen could present a big problem for MIAC teams this season.

Gustavus other the other hand needs to find a new identity. With only four current players (Sallstrom, Hill, Biewen, Shay) receiving significant playing time last season, they will need Jordan Dick, Isaac Tapp and a few other sophomores to step up to fill in the roles.

As for the conference as a whole, St. Thomas looks ripe for another conference title and a deep run into the NCAA's (Natty 'Ship?) and potentially going undefeated in the conference if they are consistent. I feel the rest of the conference (teams 2-6) will beat each other up and 2-3 playoff spots will go down to the wire (go figure) and be decided in the last game of the season.

When Lutherans Learn to Leap  ;)

The injured Kyle Zimmerman returned to the lineup for the Royals and did his best Scottie Pippen impersonation, as he scored 24 pts, snared 4 rebs, 2 assists, & 2 steals to go along with Taylor "Batman" Hall who poured in 28 points & grabbed 8 boards. Yet Bethel still fell to the Cobbs 73-65.  1-10 from behind the arc doesn't help, but they were absolutely crushed by Concordia in the paint, 39 rebounds to 22 rebounds.  Dang!

The Dawgs went to St. Peter & soundly beat the Gusties on the boards 41-28.  This was a definite surprise to me.  Gustavus hardly ever gets beats on the boards.  Final score Augsburg 81-73.

Edit:  It's a good thing we've only got a few posters on the board right now.  Otherwise, someone might have got on me for my typos.  ;)

Drake, this is the first year we've done multiple cameras, but I digress. When you do make it down, look me up and I'll buy you and Mose some popcorn. Yeah, the Carleton-UST games tend to get a bit ugly on occasion - that's what happens when both teams know each other so well. Now that Coach Fritz is gone maybe that won't be the case - figure Fritz and Kalland coached against each other 50+ times.

AO, no t-shirt cannons - we just don't charge admissions. Best deal in college basketball! If only we could get columbianmaffia to do color. Mostly will be students as always - great experience for them.

So glad MIAC hoops season is here - how else is one supposed to survive the Minnesota winters?

SUMMIT!!!!!

AO- looks like you and I are the only 2 brave enough to post our picks. I assume this strips the reigning champ Papa Hoops of his title :)

Bethel 61 Carleton 70 - a nice homecourt win for the Knights
St. Olaf   79 Macalester 62- Mac's guard play left a lot to be desired Weds
Concordia 66 Augsburg 71-- the day's marque matchup..battle of the boards goes to Kornbaum
St Johns 58 Gustavus 63- Gustie crowd will rattle young Johnnies
St. Thomas 82 Hamline 75- UST historically has troubles at Hutton but their athleticism should win out
After the game, the king and pawn go into the same box.

Italian proverb

AO

Bethel 72 Carleton 78 - Bethel looking for guard depth
St. Olaf  85 Macalester 78- Mac looks better but it isn't enough
Concordia 62 Augsburg 75-- Auggies too big
St Johns 45 Gustavus 68- The cupboard is bare in collegeville
St. Thomas 80 Hamline 52- Tommies are way too big.

gustie12

Bethel 75 Carleton 68 - Taylor Hall is too much for the Knights to handle
St. Olaf 80 MAC 57 - Oles ride their hot shooting guard play to an easy win
Augsburg 74 CC 72 - could go either way, Auggies to much inside and out
Gustavus 77 SJU 59 - Gustie crowd and experience win easily
St Thomas 85 Hamline 62 - Tommies too deep, skilled and talented for Pipers

Drake Palmer

Carlies over the Royals
Mac over the Oles - total hunch (and probably wrong)
Dawgs over the Cobbs - close game of the day
Gusties over the Jays - Gusties still smarting from their home court embarrassment to the Dawgs, pound the Jays

Tomcats over the Pipers - today's track meet

note to all coaches: in the final 10 seconds of a game triple team Sawatzke and foul him if necessary.

miacsuperfan

Oh, my.  What Tom Sawatzky does to Bethel is almost cruel.   Watched all three of his career buzzer beaters on Carleton's web (two v. BU) and all I can say is WOW!   This kid has some serious icewater in his veins!  The buzzer beater shot today against the Royals was ridiculous - - - he was 24 feet deep and hit an absolute killer three over a Bethel defender who was actually doing a pretty decent job of containment.  AO says triple team him.  I say "break his arms" with about 10 minutes to go so you don't have to worry about him.  Nicely done Mr. Sawatzky!   :o  8-)
