Saint Mary's getting a good guard in Stillwater's Aaron Romportl. One of the top defenders this year in the Suburban East Conference.

I'd say this is pretty difinitive about Westy

Really wonder what happened there...he was always well liked in my time at BU.

His name, picture, and bio are still there on the Bethel men's basketball page. That's usually deleted immediately when a coach leaves.

And SMU still has Coach Landrum and staff listed and that was announced late February. I guess that can be chalked up to slow, just like the search process.

That's not slow. That's irresponsible and unprofessional. What's going on with St. Mary's SID? I realize that spring is a busy sports season, but it takes all of five seconds to delete the coach's name from the coach's page and the athletics staff directory and post "TBA" in its place.

Same thing with Bethel, although it's obviously not as egregious a mistake as leaving Todd Landrum's name up on the coach's page and on the SMU staff directory seven and a half weeks after he left the school.

It reflects very badly upon Bethel and (especially) St. Mary's. This kind of thing just screams, "We're a rinky-dink outfit that really doesn't care that much about our school's basketball program."

And this is the very reason why I was complaining about SMU's coaching search last week.  SMU has got a good story to tell, but they keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Very interesting development at Bethel. I checked with a Bethel faculty member today and they weren't aware of this news.

Someone  call OAS.  He's got connections at Bethel. Didn't he have a family member teach at Bethel?

I just checked my feeder wire, and received another confirmation that Westlund is indeed gone.  No further word about the situation.

So the odor of hoax is gone, but there is still something rotten about the Westlund news.  Can somebody step up and clue us in on this one?   The tight lipped commentary would lead one to believe that either something embarrassing has happened, or someone is embarrassed about the nature of the decision.  Of all of the coaches who might raise some suspicion, Jeff Westlund has to be mighty low on the list of 'usual suspects.'

What is this good story?  the 1940 championship?  Their last winning season in 1987?  Can't really blame location considering the success of their cross-town rival.  They've certainly had some talented players in the last few years.

jimhoops1234

Curious if anyone else has heard about this, is Josh Drinkall not returning to Gustavus?

A little birdie told me that the St. Mary's hire is done.  An official announcement is expected soon.

bball1122

My little birdie tells me the new SMU coach is Jamison Rusthoven, currently an assistant at UW Platteville.  Maybe we have the same birdie?

couldn't help but chuckle at this line: "During his time as head coach, Southwest saw some of its most successful teams,  reaching the regional semifinals on several occasions."

That might sound good if you're looking for a job in LaCrosse, but I would think most Minnesota bucket-heads know that with our terrible 4-class format, reaching the regional semi-finals means you have won 1 game.

If Drake is right that the conference is down, perhaps it's a good time for a new coach to establish something in Winona.

What's interesting about this is that Todd Landrum also went from UW-Platteville to SMU, except that he was the head coach at UWP rather than an assistant like Rusthoven. (Landrum's the guy who had the unenviable task of following Bo Ryan at UWP.)
