Saint Mary's getting a good guard in Stillwater's Aaron Romportl. One of the top defenders this year in the Suburban East Conference.

According to SMU Baseball Facebook, Romportl is a baseball recruit. He obviously could play both but with a coaching change in hoops, baseball may have been the primary sport recruiting him. All just a guess though.

Any other recruiting info? 3 coaching changes, assistant from Gustavus has left, Freddy Coleman has left Concordia going to NDSU as an assistant (good move for him), and Ryan Kershaw will be moving from Augsburg to Carleton. Obviously the Tommies will get an abundance of talent, but what about the Johnnies, another large class? Will Mac load up on guards again? Big shoes to fill in Northfield.

I've heard that Jay Pivec (long time MCTC coach and most recently at DCTC) will be the new assistant at St. Thomas. Apparently Reusse reported this too but couldn't find a link.

You are correct Jimhoops....an excellent addition to an incredible staff:

Per Darren Wolfson on Twitter this morning, the brother of Timberwolves guard Alexey Shoved will be attending St Thomas this year. The brother does have a different last name though.

Macalester has posted their roster already. After years of predominantly adding guards, the Scots have added some much needed size with four players over 6'7".

Afternoon fellas – trust all is well in MIAC land.  I happened to take in the East Ridge vs. Woodbury HS football game last Friday night and spotted what would surely be a first team Palmer All MIAC FY Name selection if the kid played basketball.

Bareento Badasso

That is one heck of a name!

Well well... hello

Hope things pick up here soon. Let's get some MIAC chat going... I'm Alex from @NorthstarHoops, and there's plenty of D3/MIAC recruiting news floating around for you fellows.

Let's look at some of the big acquisitions so far:

Tyler Weiss, 6-7 forward, Shakopee goes to St. John's. That's huge for them, we have Weiss in our top 25 in the state and we surely thought he would go D2. Weiss' dad is an alum and put up incredible numbers (75% FG) in the early 90s.

Jon Veil, 6-1 PG, Blake goes to St. Thomas. Rich get richer as  they add a D2-caliber guard.

Nick Machemehl, 5-11 G, Lester Prairie to St. Johns. A good MIAC recruit, SJU is off to a good start.

On the Shved info, it was actually me that passed the scoop to Doogie. He won't play unless he makes varsity. The kid is good, I'm just not sure where he fits in with UST.

it has been confirmed that Shved's brother is trying out at UST. with as much as they return and the other recruits, I'd say he has a formidable challenge to make the varsity....but it sounds like he can play.

Oh, he definitely does. It's just hard to project when his experience is Euro club ball and the rest of the recruits played American HS ball. Regardless, he is a good all-around player and surprised me the other day with a nice two-handed slam. He would have a good chance at starting at most other schools.

Helloo, helloo, anybody home?  Time to dust off the old message board and get ready for another basketball season!

By my unofficial count, five out of 11 teams now have their rosters posted for the upcoming season  – Carleton, Concordia, Gustavus, Macalester, and St. Olaf.   Carleton & Concordia both look like they had decent recruiting seasons, while not so certain about the Oles & Scots.  I recently spoke with a Gustavus alum and he indicated that the incoming FY class might be a little thin on talent.

Hamline and SMU both have what appear to be partial rosters posted.   I have a hard time believing that neither school successfully recruited any freshmen this year.  Speaking of SMU, Kilroy, any idea what happened to Mark Schumacher? He looked to be a very promising freshman last year.

Austin Hawkins was a very good get for Concordia. He carried his team to state tournament in Wisconsin. Can play inside and out. Was getting plenty of interest from WIAC schools. Not exactly but somewhat in the Chris Palmer (SMU from a few years back) mold.

Peter Kruize is a good get for GAC, he'll be a solid contributor down the road. Sweeney is a coaches kid from Lake City but will have an adjustment not getting all the shots.

Who will score for Carleton?

I did hear Hamline got a transfer who should most certainly be the biggest guy in the league. If Dior Ford and Austin Johnson are back, they should have a decent front line.

Tommie roster posted.   http://www.tommiesports.com/mbb/roster/

Notable freshmen additions - 6-4 Ryan Johnson from Eagan, and sharpshooter 6-1 Dustin Fronk from 2013 state championship team Apple Valley.   Another freshman recruit is hard-nosed PG Grant Schaeffer from Eden Prairie. Schaeffer was the starting QB on the football & PG on the Eden Prairie teams.  Any insight on Jordan Burich, the 6—6 FY from Roseville?

No word regarding Jon Veil, the FY PG from Blake that Kilroy mentioned in an earlier post, nor Alexey Shved's younger brother.

****

Word I received over the weekend was that the Gusties' Peter Kruize had several D2 offers & was a real nice pickup for Gustavus.  In fact, Kruize may contend for a spot in the starting lineup this season, & possible post season All MIAC FY team honors.  We'll see.

Jon Veil still has a year of HS left, many JV players aren't listed yet, don't know why.

Hamline roster posted http://www.hamlineathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball&

FY PG Nick Kampa is the only FY name I recognize.  I believe he was an all-conference performer in the All-Metro  Conference at St. Anthony.

Jake Kreuser is the JR transfer that Jimhoops referred to in an earlier post.  Kreuser transferred from Lafayette College which is a D-1 school in the Patriot league back east, & then attended a community college last year?  Kreuser is a 7 footer who played his high school ball at Sibley HS in Mendota Heights during the recent heyday of Sibley hoops – Mike Breusewitz who played at Wisconsin, Anders Halverson – UST, & his younger Chris who rode the pine at the U.  ;)

Kreuser is a good kid with reasonable athletic skills for his size, but I'm guessing he was a bit too slow to effectively play at the D1 level.   With good coaching & guards who know how to feed a big man, Kreuser should do well in the MIAC.  I haven't seen him play since high school, but he could potentially do as well as Dan Kornbaum over at Augsburg.  It will be interesting to see how much his game might have developed since his high school days.
