DP--hotly contested is right, except for WW. They look very good. A few teams, including RF, Point, Osh, Lax COULD beat them, at home, but will have to play their best on an off night for WW. I hope I'm wrong on this assessment, but I've watched WW streams 3-4 times. Wed. nite will be a revealing set of games.

Fred, does the WIAC archive any of the webcasts of the teams? I've been hearing/reading a lot about this powerhouse that's reloading in Whitewater,  ;) and would like to get a chance to take a look for myself.  If the home teams hold serve on Wednesday, I might be tempted to make the drive over to Eau-Claire to check out the #7 Blugolds and #11 WW Saturday afternoon.

The schools would archive them, not the conference. Best to check the school sites.

I've checked UWW's site and not found anything?

Disappointing loss for BU to UST last night.  This is the first time in my memory that I feel like BU has the horses to run with UST (I think the starting 5 has been on par for the past few years, but UST brought 3-4 starting quality players off the bench vs. BU really only having one solid reserve), but they didn't show up with a performance to match.

Tommies did a great job of playing clean and efficient basketball offensively, for the most part.  Great ball movement...burned up a ton of clock.  It was a grinding and impressive performance, just about from start to finish, save for a brief moment when bethel took a lead with under ten minutes left.

Still potentially the best team the Bethel has had...hoping Coach Novak can get all of the cylinders properly firing.

Another impressive performance from Kingland, 5 blocks!  In the way too early to speculate category, I wonder how many more losses Bethel can sustain and still get into the tournament for the first time since '91.  Their SOS will most likely be lower than most pool C candidates unless the Luthers really turn it around.  Looking at the last 3 years of pool c bids, teams with lower SOS around .500 needed an average winning percentage around .820 to get in.  1 more regular season loss plus a MIAC playoff loss gets them around .840.  2 more regular season losses might be too many.

Smitty Oom

Great info AO, I feel like two more regular season losses will be too many due to the fact that MIAC teams are always sitting at roughly .500. Also the one tough non-conference game for the Royals against a tough squad in Hiedelberg will be their downfall. I hope we are able to get two teams in this year, always fun rooting for the MIAC squads in March.

I didn't watch too much of the game until the very end, but it sure does look like a season turning win for the tommies especially without their best player and one of the best PGs in the nation. Like BU referenced, I think like in past years the Tommies still have too much depth for the royals, especially when one of their starters (Bridge) gets in foul trouble. Hannon is having a great year for the Toms and Granger Kingland is an absolute beast for the Royals, he is already a lock for All Rookie team, with Jubie Alade from SJU and Chuckie Smith for Augsburg, although he had a really down game last night in their surprising loss to a usually powerless Gustie squad.

I spent most of my time watching the Cobbers and Jays in collegeville. It was a very entertainng game and two teams that will be playoff teams come the end of february. If you missed it, Zach Kinny nailed a three with .2 seconds left to put the Cobbers on top by 1 point after Weiss made the FT of an And-1 to go up 2. Dylan Alderman is currently second in conference scoring and having a tremendous year manning the Cobbs and Austin is doing a good job scoring as well. The aforementioned Kinny is a jack of all trades who is willing to do some dirty work and currently leads the MIAC in assists with over 6.5 per game. Solid offensive team but very porous on defense, will be fun to see how they stack up against the Toms and BU.

Jays are solid as well with Weiss and Stokman like we all thought before the season but FY Jubie Alade has been a huge addition for them and gives them a dynamic scorer besides those two. Strom stretches the floor well with his ability to nail threes. But much like the Cobbers and most SJU teams of the past, gives up quite a lot of points.

Fun week of MIAC basketball with games continuing on Saturday. I think that the premier matchup will be Auggie at BU with both teams coming off pretty tough losses.

Nice to see the flurry of posts on the board.

First of all, Bethel's Granger Kingland is a stud. Offensively, he can shoot the trey, & clutch trey, drive, and post up.  And at 6-3, he plays terrific post defense.  In fact, during crunch time, Kingland was guarding UST's 6-6 Ryan Boll and doing a very nice job.  It certainly appeared to me that when they needed stops, Derek Magnuson was on the bench and Kingland & Tim Hanson were handling the interior defense.  We should be hearing big things about Kingland down the road.

Great adjustments made by UST, who won the game with Grant Shaeffer on the bench with a sprained ankle.  I almost fell out of my seat when I saw the vaunted Tommie D revert to a zone for portions of the first half.  Who woulda thunk?

After hearing about John Veil for the past three years, it must must have been nice for the Tommie faithful to see Veil have a breakout game like he did last night - 27 pts, 4 rebs, 12 assists & one puny TO in 36 minutes of action!  Wow.

BU when you said "still potentially the best team that Bethel has had," you must be referring to the Coach Novak era right?  Because, I think Bethel had some teams in the late 2000s like the 09 team with Tim Madson, Cory Laugen & Mike Moberg that were outstanding.  Plus, a few years earlier they had Steve Strom & Charles Meadowcroft.  Only problem was that this was at the beginning of the Tommies mini-dynasty. If those Bethel teams were playing in this year's conference race, IMO the Royals would run away with the league title.

Great action around the league last night. I would have bet the Cobbs were going to lose on the road to the Jays.  Dylan Alderman is a big, 6-2, strong talented PG. He and the "Austin boys" could turn their senior season into a playoff run.

I need to get out and see some of the small ball the Pipes are playing with Zach Smith & Jay Betts. So on Saturday I'll be torn between seeing the Cobbs @ Hamline, or the Dawgs at Bethel.  Good games for early in the conference schedule.

Agreed, perplexing loss by Augsburg to Gustavus.

First conference game was last night and it was on the road, so there won't be any of those for you for a while.

UWW has an archived copy of the game against LAX on their website now.  Whitewater played at home.

Thanks again, without your link I'd still have a hard time finding the webcasts on the WW website.

In other MIAC news, while I was watching the initially, horrible, buffered webcast of the Bethel UST game last night (at least during the first half), I made an interesting discovery:

FY Jack Sowada of Wayzata, who was originally listed on the Carleton basketball roster in October, is now listed on the UST roster.

Smitty, if you watch the Carleton – UST game on Saturday, you'll have to listen closely and hear if the announcers make mention of this inter conference transfer.

Yes on the Novak era comment missing.  Those Madson - Moberg - Laugen teams were certainly talented, though they lacked bench support, which (IMO) has been what has kept BU from every being the top dog...they can field a first 5 talented enough to play with anyone, but the 2-3 guys that come off the bench either can't contribute offensively, or get exposed on defense.  (I think this year is different - they've got bench talent a couple deep at least!)

Also, I'm hoping that Tusler can learn to play to the refs a bit more...he's got a physical style where he tends to slightly bump the ball handler in an effort to get a steal...some refs let it go, and some call it....he needs to learn to back off when it isn't being allowed and keep himself on the court more consistently.

Interested to see how they respond against Augsburg...

AO - being the connected  guy that you are - do you know why the BU - UNW game didn't happen this year?

I think both teams just figured they'd meet in March in the tournament.  Also, way too many fights in the stands last year, bibles being thrown, big mess.

More seriously, I haven't bothered to ask about it.  Stay tuned for updates.

Ha!

I though it was a nice little rivalry to have given the proximity.
