Looks like every participating MIAC team added three NON-conference games vs MIAC schools to their schedule for a total of 10 games each (which meets the NCAA threshold-- right Pat?). This includes a UST @ SJ2 battle on March 3 in Collegeville-- one week after the final MIAC battle between the two.

Nine-games is the threshold needed to qualify for any possible NCAA Tournament, so the ten games would qualify should the need be there.

Plus there are always waivers available if a team doesn't get to nine.  The committee chairs both said they were planning to be generous to teams who apply for waivers and put an honest effort in to try for 9.

MIAC is allowing each team 11 games. I know that SMU has added SJU, GAC, Hamline, Bethel as non-conference games. If other teams have less I am sure it is because they want fewer or couldn't make all 4 games fit.

In fact the MIAC season starts on Friday, January 29 at 7pm when SMU travels to Collegeville to take on SJU [Non-Conference game]

Fingers crossed all these young men make good social distancing and mask choices.

Go Cards!

The Division III basketball season technically started nearly three months ago, but it has taken until the end of January for it to start feeling like the season is really underway. Even so, only about a quarter of the division has played just a single game. Another quarter of the division will never take to the court. And in between is wide gulf of different options.

On the first video-version of Hoopsville this season, Dave McHugh is joined by much of the D3hoops.com crew, Pat Coleman and Ryan Scott, to react to what has been one of the more unique seasons ... to say it lightly.

We react to the challenges schools are facing, what coaches are grappling with on a daily basis - especially beyond games and practices, and why schools are making so many different decisions.

We also discuss what is likely the future of this season's NCAA Championship Tournaments and, more importantly, when the decision on those tournaments will be made.

Plus, will there be a Top 25? No. Well, yes. Kind of. Tune in to learn more on what's coming. Plus a lot more including Dave spinning off Pat's thoughts on those wishing to attend games.

Tommies with a strong second half en route to an 81-52 win at Hamline.
I watched the women's game more closely once things were in hand here, so don't have a ton of grand insights.

Surprised to see Jr. Parker Bjorklund in the starting lineup. I don't think he saw the court last year. Struggled with foul trouble in the first half, so limited minutes anyway.

As Anders Nelson and Coach Tauer wax nostalgic about the final MIAC season i have to ask how many of the current U$T athletes will make Tommie roster next year?

It will be interesting to see.  St. Thomas has not traditionally brought in transfers very often.  I doubt that will change much.  You'll have freshmen, for sure, but the kind of athlete St. Thomas recruits are not all that far below the kind they'll be getting, at least initially.  With the talent and experience they have - and the guys who can help translate the culture to the next generation of player, I think you'll see many of the guys (especially the ones with the most playing time now) continuing to play.

An observation...the u$t men's basketball roster does not have a single freshman on it. My bet is they bring in a couple of transfers, a core of freshmen and about half the current team is let go .

I'm sure a number of the current roster won't see the floor next year, but that's not surprising. However, I've also seen some pretty strange things happen at the D-I level -- a guy who was legit Catholic's third-string center ended up transferring to North Carolina, became a practice player there and actually got into a couple of games.

What is the phase-in for scholarships next year? I've been trying to find this data somewhere.

I've also been intrigued by the lack of freshman. I guess not terribly surprising considering the COVID uncertainty, and perhaps Tauer preferred not to bring in a class of new guys for the roster when next year's recruits will look a bit different. Not to mention that some guys who would be interested in UST would be turned off by the transitional process and uncertainty.

Bjorklund who has been starting and putting up decent numbers as a traditional post has apparently been on campus the last two years but not on the team. Stepped in as a Jr and contributing.

They're fully in D1 as of July 1st and can give as many scholarships as allowed. I suspect they'll have some growing pains because it's a huge jump. What he know of UST, though, they'll be smart about it.

UST @ Bethel scheduled for tonight postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Bummer.
