That is crazy! Thanks for the info. Looks like his daughter is a GA at Mercer for hoops, although she was a good tennis player and didn’t play basketball in high school. Will be interested to see who the royals land!

Mississippi St is a great program. Hope Novak enjoys his move and best luck to him!

Bethel has hired a coach - they went pretty young!  I don't know anything about him beyond what I just read in the release.

https://athletics.bethel.edu/news/2021/9/7/mens-basketball-zach-filzen-introduced-as-bethels-next-head-mens-basketball-coach.aspx

He was the HC at Lancaster Bible during their recent heyday. They would've been Wooster in the first round of the NCAAs if their best player hadn't messed up his ankle dunking in warmups. (That player, incidentally, was one of the guys charged with burning down the police station in Minneapolis in 2020.)

Filzen is confident and ambitious and I think he recruits pretty well.  He keeps moving up the ranks, so he must be doing ok.

Probably far more relevant than the escapades of a former player three years after that player was coached by Filzen is the fact that Zach's mom was a highly successful coach at Carleton, leading their women's program to its only berths in the NCAA and  MIAC playoffs.  I remember Zach (a junior high kid at the time) sitting on the bench and "helping" his mom coach the Knights.  I'd say his hire is a tremendous move for both BU & him.

It sounds like he is heading "home". He grew up in Northfield (?). Not sure about his credentials. I mean, the MWC is hardly a powerhouse outside the now-gone SNC. Obviously 2 years is hardly time to build a program at Lawrence, but identical 11-14 records isn't something to get super excited about. Again, I think the chance to head closer to home was a major factor to bolt Appleton after 3 years (2 seasons).

I realize that U$T is no longer in the MIAC and is playing in the Summit league now.
Just wondering if anyone has heard  where Jarvis Omersa and Jvonne Hadley are playing this year?

I was curious about the U$T basketball schedule for 2021-22 and when I pulled it up noticed that Omersa and Hadley are not on the roster. Anyone know anything about their status.

Last I saw, Omersa is back in the transfer portal. His Twitter pinned tweet is still the UST announcement with him taking an alley oop from Anders Nelson.
Looks like J'Vonne Hadley is on the roster at Indian Hills CC.

Any idea if either of them ever enrolled at U$T?

They were both out by August so I suspect eligibility was a factor but I don't have anything to back that up

On the eve of another great D3 college basketball season, I wanted to share some interviews with former St. Mary's (MN) coaches. I coached D3 basketball for 12 seasons in the state of Wisconsin. Hope you enjoy!

Pretty quiet in this place. Any thoughts on preseason favorites? I think St John's returns most of its squad (including an end of bench transfer from UST) from a disappointing COVID-shortened season.
St Mary's returns most of its major contributors except for Cave.

Johnnies had a freshman guard in the starting lineup last weekend...a 6'1" shooter Kooper Vaughn from St. Charles. They also picked up a 6'7" transfer from UMD. Bringing back Hanson, Plombom and Codute as well. Should have a good season and be the favorite for the conference. Maybe this is the year the make a bit of a run in the NCAA playoffs.

Didn't see this news, but it is a great hire for Bethel. He is a good coach with a strong pedigree. This is a homecoming for him. I just wish it was at St. Olaf. I think Bethel will be very happy with him. The Filzen family is among the nicest I've ever met. It is impossible to feel like a stranger around them!

St. John's / Bethel game scheduled for tonight has been canceled due to Covid concerns with Bethel's team.  Game will not be made up as a conference game.  Goes in the record books as a 2-0 Johnnie victory.  Wonder who gets credit for the 2 points.  For NCAA playoff considerations it does not count as a Johnnie victory.  They could schedule a makeup game but that would not count as a conference win.

Get used to it.  We are going to see a LOT of this.

Yeah, I think so too - especially as we work through this new variant right now - hopefully it is largely flushed through by the time playoffs roll around and teams are able to have a clean post-season?
