Wow, they think they won a scrimmage. Guess I'd better call Vegas and change my bets. Move aside UST....BU is taking over!!!!!    ;)

SPLASH

I just hope that Bethel doesnt have Cook front anyone this year because when he gets big in the lane and gets his hands up, he cant to shot over with accuracy.

tjones33- I am not exactly sure what you were trying to say at the end of that sentence. Maybe it's just me? Can you clarify?

BETHEL34

Splash, i believe he was meaning that when Cook is just big in the lane, he can't be shot over with accuracy.  If he stands behind the post instead of fronting the post, he is very hard to shoot over.

That's a  "goodun" CMafia!  I didn't read your post real carefully at first & just opened the link .  Initially  I thought you meant that wonderful (not) opening sentence - "DeAngelo Williams "has left" today's game in the first quarter with a sprained left ankle...

Then I reread your post & I see you were trying to draw our attention to the headline which reads:  According to Nutt, Dick to replace Johnson against the Cocks

Some of our, lets' say more colorful posters could have a field day with that headline.  smirk.

Looks like they should hire you as a copy editor.  Nice find!
;D

By the way the Johnnies roster is now posted.

Splash, Bethel in the past has always fronted the post.  I am hoping they dont do that with Cook.  Does that clarify?

crazy_carl

Thanks for that eloquent clarification, Drake!  Karma points for all . . .

welcome to the board, tim gilbert (am assuming that bethel34 could be no other.)   great career following brother andy through the ranks; he too was a player.   it is good to have a third "name" player posting on this rack.   keep up the good work.
hey, how bout an update on your bro?    i understand that he has been playing in australia.    and are there other former miac players doing likewise?

The media picked Stout to finish 4th in the WIAC this year, though I think they will finish ahead of Whitewater and Stevens Point. First game at the Wooster tourney provides a real early indication of how good UST is, and how much improvement theyve made on defense. Stangl, the 2 for Stout, is very quick to the basket and is an excellent shooter. Farmer, the 3, is as athletic as anyone, and could present a serious problem for the Tommies. Theyve got a 7 footer in the middle, Nonemacher, but he isnt much of a threat offensively. And their point, Chandler, is savvy and extremely tough with the ball. Stout is loaded with speed and quickness, and will push the tempo all day on the Tommies. I think thats the kind of game UST will want to be in, especially with their depth. They will have a distinct advantage inside, so I see Shimek having a chance to really blow up.

I realize that post was incredibly premature, but I get excited for WIAC/MIAC matchups.

Meglo – I share your interest in the  upcoming season.  By the way, in a previous post (#415)  I mentioned the challenge that lay ahead of theTommies in the their first game of the season. (Bear with me while I work on my Posting Up formatting skills   ;))

...We will all have a better idea of how strong this UST team might be after they return from their tourney at Wooster in a couple of weeks.  If they get by a very solid UW-Stout from the WIAC in their first game, more than likely they'll play Wooster in the tournament final.  Wooster is currently ranked #3 & received one 1st place vote in the preseason D3 poll. ..

But be that as it may, I think we're both correct in that the match up with UW-Stout will be a very tough opening game for both teams.

I happened to mosey across the river last season to check out the Stout vs. Stevens Point bout.  Both teams were nationally ranked at that time, UWSP at #1 & Stout around or about at #20.  Since the Pointers had soundly beaten a strong Gusties team the previous year, I wanted to see for myself what all the excitement was about regarding the future 05 D3 champs, & follow up on the progress of a few MN kids that got away, Adam Chandler, Eric Heisler & Jesse Huser on the Stout team.

The game took place in a barnburner atmosphere, as it was a men's & women's doubleheader & the joint was jumping!  In recent memory, the only place that rocked liked the Stout field house was at GAC when they beat UST in the tourney finals last February.

Anyway I digressed. Stout played a very, very, strong, 1st half against UWSP & led by double digits until the closing seconds of the 1st half.  Then Point's superior size, shooting & stifling defense began to wear down the smaller Stout team in the 2nd half.  I love Adam Chandler's (5-9) game but I think Sweeny's craftiness, experience & size wins out. Yeah, I said size, Chandler's lucky to top out at 145 lbs.  Ryan Stangl their 2G is not real large either 6-0, 160lb or so. Stangl (6-0) had a good season last year but he really struggled with the Point defenders as they kept putting bigger defenders on him & he couldn't get his jump shot off.  When he tried to drive, one of the Point big men were waiting for him to knock his stuff away.  On the other hand Terry Farmer (6-3/200lbs) is scary.  I haven't seen as many players that can blow by you with a quick first step like that at D3.  Problem is he's really more of a 4  playing in a 2G's body & he doesn't have much of a J to keep defenders honest.

I think if UST plays to their strengths & keep fresh defenders - Peterson, Weaver, Robinson, et al on the Stout guards, they'll be alright.  If they get by Stout which I think they should, their experience in that game will certainly help them in the game against Wooster.  From reading the NCAC board it sounds like Wooster has become real perimeter oriented this year.  This is not to say that the Tommies can't run, they can.  I'm sure Coach Fritz will allow them to selectively push the ball up the floor this year, but if the players decide to get out & try to run the floor all night with the likes of Stout, or from what it sounds like Wooster,  they're doomed.   The Tommies have got one bona fide ball handler - Sweeney, Keating & Robinson are competent, & I'm not so sure about the rest of the Tommie guards.  Peterson always made me a little nervous when he was handling the ball out on the wing . If Stout effectively get into their run & jump press & the Tommies play ego based ball rather than smart ball, it could be a long night for them.  Hopefully not.

I'll look forward to reading your reports from the Buckeye state!  And I can't wait to actually see any game.  Ridegewater CC, MCTC anyone?  Local Coach, anyone else are you out there?  ;D

Jared Swansen plays in Australia. This is his second season.

BETHEL34

MSF, thanks for the welcome.  He did quite well this last season in Aus.   He just got back in Aug and is going back for season two this march.  There are three leagues in Aus.  The MBL, which is the Top League where like Nick Horvath is playing in where you actually make some good money.  Then there is the ABA which is the next league where you make dec money.  Both those leagues are in the Eastern side of Aus.  Then there is the SBL which is the Main league on the Western Side of Aus which is supposedly a little less competitive then the ABA.  A little less paying.  But some MBL players play in it because it is like an off season for them.  Anyways, he played for a team that was picked to finish 7th in the league out of ten.  They had lost some guys going into the season.  Andy lead the League in scoring with 32.5 a game along with 10 rebs and 5 assists.  His team finnished 2nd in season play and one it all in the playoffs.  He was named MVP.  So, he played very well.  In the last two weeks he has had a couple coaches from the ABA league offering him Contracts.  So, most likely he will being moving up to that league.  So, now he is back here working a 9-5 job, he is not liking that to much.  You get spoiled a little bit when all you have to worry about is B-ball.  He is married though, so it makes it easier not being there  in Aus alone.  I know he played against Lue Witt from St. Johns in the SBL, don't know of any other miac players down there though.
