"All I was saying is that Keating did the raise the roof, which I disapproved of."

What was wrong with that? Remember, this UST team has alot of "payback feelings" after last year. They must have been playing with some emotion.....and from what I've been told, the Gusties had NONE!

Drake - I'm a little confused by your post. Who and where are the so-called Wonka haters? TH4L, a devout Tommie fan, agreed with my assessment of Keating, as did Big Shocker. Am I missing something or are you seeing something that isn't there?

Willy - I'm going to borrow a page or two out of your posting handbook today.

First, in response to your 1st question.  By the time I finished reading your resentful, spiteful   ;) post late yesterday afternoon, chuckled to myself & logged in to reply (approximately 4-5 minutes) your karma had gone from a +1 or 2,  to a - 2.  Thus my statement, the "Wonka haters" are out.

Now to use a Wonka tactic,  I've gotta run off to a meeting or two, More later.

The "more later" is the hit & run, guerilla style posting tactic of yours that I'm using.  First, a quick feint, or counter jab post, followed up with a body shot blow later.  That is, provided I have the time, interest or documentation to back up my previous post/s.  8)

Drake - Easy buddy. Look at my posting times: 12:40am and almost 1pm the next day; right before bed after the long drive home and right before a long work meeting. I hardly had the time to make the post I wanted. You don't seem to be jumping all over Loco for not posting with his excuses  :-*

funbb - Offseason surgery would make sense for Keating. He was no where close to the player I was expecting or had heard about, so at least he has a reason. Any idea when he'll be non sucky-sucky? :)

Big Shocker - Don't back down to these chumps :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Willy –I didn't intend to make it appear I was jumping all over your stuff.  With regard to the "guerrilla"posting tactics, that was in jest.  I've been guilty of using that technique on more than one occasion myself.  For example, I used that technique in my first post today as I was attempting to quickly accomplish two things:

1)  To respond to your question about the "Wonka haters" comment I made yesterday.  (Again in jest)

2) To let you know I was around & I was planning on posting in greater detail later today hence – the "more later" comment.

I really did have a meeting I needed to attend this AM.  I do know that the drive from St. Peter to Red Wing takes more than an hour.  So IMO, those are valid reasons to write a "more later". Cool?  :)

With this being said, I think we've all had our "chops" handed to us on occasion on this board.  And you know I've gotten on Local in the past for his seemingly endless knowledge of all high school players in the upper Midwest.  About a month ago I was trying to get a handle of "Mason" stuck to Mark Dixon & I was quickly dispatched by the rest of the board.

In your situation, you've probably got a bit more solid support for your Keating statements from yesterday with a couple of notable exceptions:  Calling him a "joke" & "glorified role player" was & is more than a bit excessive.  However, from the sounds of your latest posts, it sounds like some backpedaling is already taking place & now you're saying he might be a "serviceable or solid MIAC player."

As Funballer pointed out, he's had several serious injuries which I referred to several months ago:

LC - I for one would seriously doubt that UST goes undefeated.  Good question about the Keating eligibility issue though.  Technically, he's a senior, but I know he did use a medical redshirt one year.  I haven't been to enough Cretin/UST football games this year to get the scoop on what he has decided to do both athletically & academically.

No offense to Neal Anderson, but Mike Keating is a stud. He boards, shoots, plays defense, finds the open man, & has a great passion for the game.  He's an Espenson type player, he makes his teammates better. If he's fully recovered from his injuries look out.

Mike Keating would be the last person that would alibi or would want someone else to make excuses for him.  As I've also said about Mike, he's a winner.  He & Sweeney are 21st century players with an old school approach to the game.  They were both on one of the best high school "teams" I've ever seen: the 00-01 & 01-02 Cretin teams.  Teams in the sense, that the players all enthusiastically accepted & played their parts.  The Bloomington Jefferson team of around that era also had the same type of great chemistry –Matt Ohme now at St. Johns & Dan Wheeler out at Amherst.  Those teams like your Gusties teams, were a thing of beauty to watch!

The 01 Cretin team had Joe Mauer, now of the Twins, long range bomber Steve Sir who went on to San Diego State on a basketball scholie, Sweeney & Keating.  As juniors, both Keating & Sweeney deferred to their senior teammates & played complementary, yet vital roles on that team.  Yet, Keating was still an All Conference player as both a junior & senior, selected POY in the St. Paul City conference, made various All-State teams & was a finalist for Mr. Basketball as a senior.

In their senior year, Cretin got absolutely destroyed by a Mpls Henry team in the finals of a Xmas tourney at UST.  I made the comment to a friend of mine as we were walking out of the game that if Cretin played Henry again, I liked their chances. A Henry fan overheard my conversation & proceeded to call me all kinds of names I can't repeat on this board.  At the time Henry had like 5-6 D1 type of players on their team including Lawrence McKenzie, sad Terry Pettis, Steven Neal, Zerek Knight, etc.  Well, 2 months later, Keating was a monster in their next meeting, Sweeney was unflappable, & Cretin won the TC championship game 81-75.

So as a competitor, & now fan, cool – go ahead & say "you don't think he's showed you his best stuff", but to say he's a joke, no.  It sounds like he is recovering, & I hope he fully does.  And if he does, everyone will see what we've been talking about.  I'm sure he's heard the rumors too about too many egos & not enough basketballs to distribute, but as I've said before, Keating's about the Win.  He's going to do what he can to make that happen.  So, if it means this year he's a passer, defender & rebounder first, so be it.
Keating's a midwest kid - his mindset is more attuned to the winning Chicago Bulls/Detroit Pistons mentality than that of the west coast Lakers.

Peace

BS,

Feel free to shut your pie hole about Keating's "raising the roof." I'm sorry if that sounds aggressive, but that was minimal compared to some things I've seen happen when UST got blown out at their home court (Gustavus and Carleton for example). As was stated earlier, the Tommies played with plenty of emotion, and the Gusties had none other than Sowden. Everybody loves to rip on UST when they get blown out, but we can't have a little fun when we win by 36 at Gustavus? Come on, that's ridiculous.

Drake - 10-4.

From the games I've seen him play, he's been far from impressive. As I said in my initial post, numerous people disagreed with my assessment at the game - but they were speaking from prior viewings. His game right now is average for a 6-6, 225-pound player in the MIAC - somewhere in between Muenchow and Sowden :)

TH4L - Easy. I actually wanted to see Sweeney give a few fist pumps to raise the roof after his shot almost took it down so the crowd could get on him, but Keating's exaggerated, walking roof raising was a little over the top. Hard to argue with and swallow the outcome, but hopefully we can return the favor in a few months :)

Sucky-Sucky?  You're still numb from that a$$ kicking the other night, aren't you? Nobody said Keating was a Kobe or anything like that. l will, however, say he plays in much the same mold you did in that he hustles like hell and will do whatever it takes to win. Offensively though, he does make you look sucky-sucky in comparing your offensive play when you were at GAC (meaning, either you weren't a good shooter or Hanson wouldn't let you; yeah, we've all seen you throw up a few bricks!!) BUT, you're overall hustle, especially on "D", was excellent. ;)

Keating will prove how good he is before the year is out, and even if he doesn't, he'll take the wins over trying to prove something to anybody.

And now we're called chumps?  Yep, just proves you're still bitter!!   ;)

What the heck is wrong with being a role player?!  Role players help you win championships, just look at the Pistons and Spurs.  In the beginning of the season everyone was concerned there wouldn't be enough shots to go around and that would cause dissent among the UST.  Now they are playing well, and if one or two players are hot the other three take a role in helping the team in other ways, and we describe this as 'sucky' or performace not living up to their potential?  Point is, if Keating was the only stud on the team he probably would score 20+ but he's not so he doesn't have to.  I don't think his play has been poor at all, and I agree with the sentiment that Keating and ALL of the Tommies care more about winning than personal stats.  He will have games where he shines this year, but I wouldn't expect much to change in terms of his play.  Also, lets not throw around the term 'role player' like it is a derogatory word.

Hey Mig
Schnettler is way better then Finn was. I did not think Finn was that good of a player. But I did not gaurd him in practice though. He is a great shooter and he has the quickest shot I have seen. By the way how did you gaurd Finn he played like 5 years ago.

iowa_transplant

in defense of willy & big shocker, i'll hafta admit that i thought the whole raising the roof thing lacked class but there were some other incidents that irked me, too, like when wittwer got hacked pretty badly while goin up for a layup when the tommies were up 25. sure, i understand that ppl can get excited & play aggressively, but there's definitely a line that was crossed wednesday night on at least a few occasions.

as far as the 1 & 2 spots in the conference, i think that they're ust's and gac's (in that order) until someone proves otherwise, but i guess we'll just hafta wait & c wut happens.

TommieHoops4Life

Schnettler is a much more complete player than Finn was. Finn kind of just painted himself anywhere behind the 3-point line where he could get himself open. He never drove much into the lane, because he never had to with the other four guys on the floor (Buri, Sioris, Fitzgerald, etc.). Schnettler has the great shooting touch, but you can guard a one-dimensional palyer. That's why his ability to get in the lane and score, to pull up and knock it off the glass like PI mentioned, makes him so tough. He can score in a variety of ways, and that's why he's one of the best guards in the conference and one of the toughest matchups.
