Local--

Give me a break, and sorry to mull a dumb point on your end, but DeRock is jumping against two players flat footed on the ground and he's pulling his knees up towards his chest.  I'd venture if you straightened his legs out he's maybe 12 inches off the ground...SWEET!!

Faunch-- Its hard to compare the two (UST football, SJU hoops)... in the past 30 years, UST has won one football title and shared 3, so middle of the pack is hardly a drop off. It's more like the U of MN and its "Tradition of Mediocrity".  In that same span, SJU has won 7 basketball titles (the only ones SJU has won). So I guess I'd have to say SJU hoops has fallen further, as they had further to fall. Also, UST never had fan support for football and that is unchanged, whereas Rat Hall and the Palestra (pre-Sexton remodeling) were as frightening of a place to play as Cameron... now, you can hear a pin drop, even during the SJU/UST game.

oAs-- I agree, that is an awesome non-jump....makes for a good photo though   ;D

watchman-- I didn't think it could possibly be as bad as last year, certainly not worse. I was wrong. Do I need to bring a gas mask Feb 4?   :)

WW-- I was tired, not hammered....back to back 15 hour days are hell, unless they are spent on a golf course like some of yours  :)

I absolutely hate the remodeled Sexton, the fans are so far off the floor.  Anyone have any thoughts to why the SJU/STU Basketball rivalry died? When I was in School back in the (80's) it didn't matter what the teams records were when they played or what time of year, you had to be there by halftime of the JV game to get a seat.   The intensity was incredible.  Something must have happened for that to all change?

Kinda sucks a little out of the rivalry when UST keeps winning by 40 evey game.

Is the hoops season the annual payback slap by UST to SJU for the football season??

MM--Way to clean up that post! :)

09-- I agree the remodeling job ruined a good venue, although Rat hall was a fan's delight. It was something to see when they'd raise the curtain so another 500 or so could stand on the tennis courts and watch.

I think a key reason for diminished fan support @ SJU can be attributed to the success of the football program. it has spoiled Johnnie fans, who seem unwilling to support anything less than a sure win. Up until and through 2000-01, SJU filled the gym. Then the team started struggling and attendance plunged. (An eerie coincidence is that is about the time when Mac started building a fan base)

Whatever the reasons, it is sad. A game at SJU in the "good old days" was entertaining even if you couldn't see the court!

Just wondering....you think SJU fans converted to MAC?? Mac's team isnt any better than SJU's so why would they go cheer for a lesser team?  I i know you said eeire coincidence but i think that has nothing to do with SJU attendance dropping. Just a personal opinion.

The remodeling of MIAC gyms is a good topic.  MAC's is slated for the next two years.  It will be a sad day when the Cage is replaced by a larger, less hostile, gynasium.

I've already asked the AD to consider building the new complex around the current gymnasium.  He wasn't buying the idea.  Oh well. :)

Someone asked about Cook not being the boxscore for BU, and while I do not know the details, I did see him in street clothes in a picture on the bench, so there is a chance he is injured.  Also, Blazejek has not been in the boxscores since the break.  Any BU fans know what's up?

onearmedscot

I know why Cook is out...

From the Star Tribune:
QuoteA 22-year-old man is in custody after allegedly assaulting and robbing two teenagers and threatening to kill them after a snowball hit his car.

Just kidding...although the story is true.  A Gaylord guy...no confirmation if it is a Henke or not.

funbballer,

Geez, you just can't seem to catch a break! You hyped up Keating, he hadn't done much scoring early in the season. You then retract the statement recently, and he goes for 18 points against the Johnnies. I feel for ya partner ;)

No, I simply found the timing coincidental and Mac's increase in attendance/support is totally unrelated to SJU's decline in those areas. I think SJU's W/L  ratio is a primary cause...plus thngs I've heard about Lackey or Fakey or Latchkey (or whatever his name is) and his moronic move to kill off the Rat Pack.

A few thoughts regarding some posts:

Joey Shimek is an all-conference player, he's just had a different role on this year's team. I talked with him after the win at MAC, and his exact words were "I love playing in this offense because I don't have to score a lot." The Tommies have other guys that can put the ball in the basket, so he can focus on shutting down the inside, grabbing rebounds and getting a basket every now and then. He's a solid player, but what he does on the court often times is never seen in a boxscore.

I might be in the minority here, but I love the remodeling of Sexton Arena. I never saw the old one, but the new one was probably an attempt to create a bigger venue, and hopefully a bigger atmosphere. One thing I'd like to see more of in MIAC gyms is having a scoreboard above center court. I realize that this is an attempt to turn small gyms into more of a D-I atmosphere, which is not what D-III is all about, but plain and simple, I like it better.

Judging from the whipping that the Tommies handed the Johnnies, Fritz sent his team a clear message after a bad home loss to Augsburg. I understand the Auggies are better this year, but losing to a team like that on your home court is unacceptable. The Johnnies were the unfortunate recipients of some anger. Nice to see Keating do what he is capable of, but like what has been previously mentioned, can he keep it up and be consistent? As far as the UST/SJU rivalry, at least in football, everyone is so drunk at the game that you're lucky if half the students know what's going on. The Tommies have been a mediocre program in recent history, and you go to St. John's to play for John Gagliardi. At basketball, at least from my experience, a majority of UST students are there to be seen and don't even pay attention to the game. Some don't even know what's going on during the game. I looked intoxicated because I was the only one it seemed that wanted to get into the game and knew the game enough to realize the situations and what was going on.

One thing I forgot, totally not basketball related:

How about that USC/Texas game last night! Vince Young is the best football player I've ever seen period. I hope he goes back to win the Heisman next year, because he was robbed this year. I would also laugh if Reggie Bush goes back for his senior year, because it makes those horrible NFL games at the end of the year that everyone called the "Reggie Bush" bowl meaningless. The better team won last night, but I wanted that game to go all night. The Vikings need to get rid of Culpepper, Smoot, somebody else and their draft pick and trade up to get the #2 pick and get Young if he goes to the draft. I want him as my quarterback next year if I'm Zygi "Money is no object for me to win a championship" Wilf.
