So, ehh Local, are you avoiding my question about having seen the Gusties play this season?   8)

Drake, I would never avoid a question from you my friend. I saw the Gusties play back in November at home against Bethany Lutheran.  What a blow out that game turned out to be.  :o

Looks the MIAC world is beginning to come back to normalcy.

UST is king. GAC, SJU and CAR are clearly the next best three. BET is returning to glory. SMU and HAM are faltering under the playoff talk pressure.

HAM just isn't playing any defense right now. This needs to be addressed fairly soon or the cahnces grow slimer for the playoffs. At home vs Concordia is a must win to finish the first half 5-5. They lose this, they are done with Gustavus, Carleton and St. Thomas the first three on the second loop.

the sub chart is a planned out substitution pattern that is mapped out before the game which determines who plays when and for how long...it doesnt really matter if your having a bad game or a good game they stick to it pretty good...it has worked over the years though so i cant complain

Question for you veteran MIAC watchers. The officials last night at the SJU/AUG game were: Jeff Coombe, Eric Curry & Brad Casey. Which one of these three resembles Bill Clinton?

Being a High School official I tend to watch officials at games. This guy, in my book was a showboat. I thought overall the crew had a less than stellar game. They clearly missed several out bounds calls etc. Fouls were very inconsistent between the 3 officials.

Thanks CM. I figured it was something like that but i wasnt sure. So every player has a set amount of playing time per game?? wow great strategy.  ???

Watch - It seems to be working pretty well for Flip in MoTown right now :)

I don't really have anything useful to say right now, but I just wanted to thank Coach Hanson for giving me the flu on Saturday. It's been great  :-X

CMOB- LONG PO(S)T WARNING :)    Originally I forgot to include the"S" in the headline - duh.

Subtitled:  What I did over my lunch hour   ;D

As I mentioned on the Pickems board, the game picks are going to get real dicey as the 2nd half of the season unfolds.  Right now we have UST sitting pretty at 9-1 with a 2.5 game lead over their nearest rivals.  There's a 3 team tie of CARL, GAC, & SJU for 2nd place at 6-3, & a 3 team tie of BET, CORD & HAM for 4th place at 4-5.

What better way to close out the first half of the season than with these games on Wednesday night -

As part of the 3-way tie for 2nd place at 6-3, we have the Gusties taking on the now suddenly dangerous, fellow 2nd place team, the Johnnies at St. Petes.  Gusties need to find a consistent scorer besides TeBrake – Sowden?  Their defense might not be as dominant as years past, but they still can get it done. It looks like the Johnnies are still trying to find their team identity – we're bangers, 3-point specialists, or the complete team?

In Northfield, we have the 3rd part of the 3-way triumvirate, the tough 6-3 Carleton Knights taking on the "left for dead by the side of the road," the Bethel Royals.  The 4-5 Lazarus-like Royals have "resurrected" their game & surged back into the thick of the playoff race.  (Being that it's Bethel, I couldn't resist the Biblical references ;D) They picked up a couple of surprise wins over the Cobbs & the trendy pre-season playoff pick, the Hamline Pipers.

The little engine that could - the SMU Cardinals are holding it down in sole possession of 3rd place at 5-4 & could possibly get a bit of a breather at the 2-7 (do I dare say "hapless"?) STO Oles.  Actually, in looking at their schedule, the Redbirds have got a decent schedule for the next week & ½ or so –

At STO on Wed 1/18
Auggie @ home Wed 1/25
At MAC Sat 1/28
CORD @ home the next day on Sun 1/29

Fighting for their respective seasons we have the Cobbs & Pipes both at 4-5.   As if losing Eckhoff wasn't a big enough blow, now it looks like Dixon might be missing as well.  I've dogged him in the past, but he's been an essential part of the Cobbers' success the last couple of seasons.  Somehow or another I think the Cobbs just might keep the ship afloat, or at least stay around or close to 500.  And in this year's race, that might be enough for them to sneak into the playoffs.

I said it earlier this season & I'll say it again, I think SJU or Hamline will make the playoffs, but not both.   Weel, right now the Pipers & Johnnies are looking at making a prophet out of me yet. Right now, these are two teams going in the opposite directions.

Resilience in sports & life is a funny thing.  After the beat down by UST & followed up with the demoralizing road loss to SMU, it would have been easy for the Johnnies to turn over & croak up a pathetic season.  But somehow or another they've managed to regroup & are riding a nice, little 3 game win streak.

On the other hand, Hamline was flying high & looking like a million bucks.  They also had a 3 game win streak & now the bottom has seemingly dropped out for them.  It's going to be interesting to see how they come back, & what happens to everyone else around the league.

In the also ran department...

I've been hearing good things out of the Dawg pound & the players seem to believe they've got a good coaching staff & recruiting plan in place.

There's no reason why Mac can't compete with Carleton & get a few more of those MIAC Ivy league type hoopers.  Kietzer seems to be a pretty solid coach & if they could just give him a little more to work with ... sigh.  Mebbe, just mebbe, if the MAC admission dept. would allow just a couple of students with 28 ACTs who know how to play ball,  rather than holding out for the non-playing, wanna be playas with the 32 ACTs.  I heard a few fans were cringing when a couple of the MAC benchwarmers stepped out on the court at the end of the Gustie /MAC game last night.

In case anyone asks, I already mentioned STO the other day.   ::)

Dang Local - Bethany Lutheran?!?  You must have decided to extend the Thanskgiving break to stick around & watch that one.

I was assuming you quietly sneaked in & out of St. Pete's & watched the Pipes play the Gusties on Wednesday, November 30th.

Drake - Good post. I like the research. To think, you didn't even have to talk to any "sources" to get that all figured out ::) It's nitpicking, but isn't SMU technically fifth place, not third?

I'm also curious as to why Loco would make the drive to watch GAC crush B.Lutheran. No one figured that to be any type of game and, if that's all he has to base the Gusties on this season, that's a little skewed. I'm sure that 46-point victory made them seem like they could beat Duke...

Flip uses a sub chart!!!! are you serious. Wow, that just shows that Mchale should have been fired instead of Flip. Wolves are pretty bad now without a good coach.
