14-2 run for CAR over the final 4:59 to win.  How does a team score two points in the final 5 minutes of a game?

OAS - I don't know about history, but those scores are awful close.  It sounds like in most cases one of the teams was up by double digits or a good size margin in the second half, only to lose (St. John's, Bethel & Concordia).  As I said prior to this season, I believe there is more parity in the MIAC this year then there has been in the past 5-10 years.

It sounds like the Gustavus/SJU game was quite entertaining.  I'm looking for some more input from those who attended.  I see that the Johnnies only shot 4 of 17 from long range and made it to the free throw line a total of 6 times.

A couple of career highs were posted yesterday.  Mr. Drake from Carleton scored 32 points and Mr. Foster from Hamline scored 23 points.

Having reached the midway point of the season, I have a few topics up for discussion.

First question - What will the record of the sixth and final playoff participant be?  11-9? 10-10? 9-11? Better or worse? At this point the standings seem to be taking shape like many of us predicted, particularly at the top.  UST, Gustavus, and Carleton are the top three, with St. John's not far behind.  It would appear that Hamline righted their ship last night, and although SMU has lost three in a row, how many of us thought they would be 5-5 at the halfway point?

I would also like to offer my mid-season awards and honors.

All-Conference:

Isaac Rosefelt - UST
Brian Schnettler - UST
Tom Conboy - MAC
Brendan Bosman - MAC
Adam TeBrake - GAC
Phil Sowden - GAC
Dan Forkrud - CAR
Jake Phillips - CAR
Luke Linz - CON
Tony Thrasher - HAM
Jon DeRock - HAM
Craig Shafer - SJU
Paul Henrichs - SJU
Michael Batterman - SMU
Bobby Hunter - STO
Charles Meadowcroft - BU

POY - Isaac Rosefelt, UST
COY - Steve Fritz, UST

All-Freshmen team:

Zach Johson - CAR
Jon DeRock - HAM
Tony Thrasher - HAM
Nate Assel - MAC
?

Have at me now Drake, OAS, Willy, et all.

Tough loss for the Johnnies last night. did not have an opportunity to listen to the game so my info comes from the box score.

SJU had 3 stretches in the second half where they went 3+ minutes without scoring, including one that started with 4:37 left and went to 1:36.

Johnnies shot ONE FT the second half, 4-6 for the game! Gusties were 12-16 from the stripe in the second half alone and 16-20 for the game. SJU was 0-6 beyond the arc in the second half.

I thought GAC was a very physical team? they only had 11 fouls while the Johnnies had 20. Are the Gusties much quicker than the Johnnies?

SJU out rebounded GAC 38-24.

I posed this question about a week ago. Hopefully we will get some opinions this time around. I see the top three teams as pretty solid. UST without a question is #1. GAC has 6 road games the second half, while CAR only has 4 could that be the difference? I predict the Johnnies will finish 4th at 12-8. HAM is in for an interesting stretch. Their next three games are GAC and CAR at home and then at UST! Will this stretch put them in the death spiral? SMU also has 6 road games the second half of the year. I think HAM finishes in 5th at 10-10. The 6th spot goes to a 9-11 record. SMU has the inside track, but I think BET has a more favorable schedule. The walking infirmary called CON is an outside possibility.

Local-
While the Pipers may have righted the ship last night, if they drop the next three games to Carleton, Gustavus and St. Thomas, can they rebound from 5-8 to make the playoffs?
From past experience and in the last few weeks, once they lose a few games, they continue to lose games. If the Pipers are to make the playoffs, I think thy need to win at least one game in the stretch. At home vs GAc or CAR the best chance.

DeRock vs Foster debate begins for all-conference. Foster has quietly been the Pipers best player over the past two weeks.

OAS-
Those scores are pretty amazing. It looks like it was closer at HAM/CON than the final score. Since it seems you watchted the Pipers game last night, how would you rate the Pipers' defensive performance? 77 pts to a team w/o Eekhoff, Dixon and Linz and Miller for part of the game seems a lot.

They're like the Denver Nuggets of the 90's run and gun and minimal D.

Watching Foster go for 23 was interesting and watching the Asian Sensation was fun!

ALso, the Augsburg webcast guy was really good.  The two doing the CAR webcast weren't bad either.

Mac slips in at 6th spot with a 10-10.

I'll post all leaguers later but Mr. Local, I'd say Assel has hit a wall and won't make the Frosh Team.

sorry oAs, there is no way MAC can come back from their current record of  to make it to 10-10. I think it will end up UST, GAC, SJU, BET, CAR, and SMU sneaking into the 6th spot just because i want Trewick to do it.

The way the announcer was making it sound last night was that the officials were letting them play. Alot of pounding inside wasn't getting called on them and SJU was getting called for small ticky tacky fouls like a little bump here and there. The Johnnies shot right around 45% for the game and GAC was right around 50%. If you would have told me before the game that the Johnnies would shoot 45% and lose i would call you crazy. Also, like sumander pointed out the Johnnies took the goose egg from deep in the second half. That is the Johnnies game shooting threes and if those don't fall they could be in trouble and they were.

Listening to the webcast last night it was a disappointing loss for BU (all the while watching Bucky on mute take one on the chin from OSU didn't help either).  Drake seemed great last night, but no one has really mentioned that Meadowcroft has been playing really well lately.  After seeing him play some this summer when I was home visiting, I thought he might be able to do this, like what he did last night.  I think some of Bethel's recent improvement has a large amount to do with his more consistent and solid play.  In my opinion, he is one of the five best players in the league when he plays consistently at his best, so here's hoping he is able to continue that.  He makes BU a much better team that way.

The cobbers have now potentially lost Eckhoff, Dixon, Linz, and Miller all to season ending injuries.  Has anyone ever heard of ANYTHING like this before?  Top four scorers, top four rebounders, top four minute men all gone is unbelievable.

Eckhoff is gone for good with his ACL.  Dixon is questionable with his shoulder.  Linz is questionable with an unidentified foot injury suffered in last night's game.  Miller is a source of incredible concern with a potentially damaged retina.  Four serious injuries.

What-if's aren't fun, but one has to wonder what this season looks like with the cobbers full roster.  This makes St. John's Westman-issue look piddling in comparison.

Don't count out MAC.  (I know this sounds ridiculous after hammering on them after Monday's pitiful performance)  They have seven losses by 4, 4, 5, 6, 7 and two by 15 points.

They have made some adjustments moving T-Rob to the starting lineup.  If Conboy wakes up and Bos and Hollander play at a consistently high rate, they could go 9-11 or even 10-10.

MAC has 10 games left in the MIAC. Five of those games are on the road. They play @ BET, @ UST, @CON, @ CAR and @ GAC. All five of those are hard games especially on the road. CON will be a long drive and will be a tough game no matter who CON has playing. The other four will be very tough games. I think MAC would be lucky to win two games on the road the rest of the year. As for their home games they play SMU, STO, HAM, SJU and finish with AUG. HAM and SJU will be very tough games for the Scots and even SMu could be tough. I see them winning maybe three of these games. They will finish 6-14 or 7-13.
