In a famous fable by Aesop, a fox declared that he didn't care that he could not reach an attractive bunch of grapes because he imagined they were probably sour anyway. You express sour grapes when you put down something you can't get: "winning the lottery is just a big headache anyway." The phrase is misused in all sorts of ways by people who don't know the original story and imagine it means something more general like "bitterness" or "resentment."

I stand corrected.

Forget Sour Grapes...Gusties & Willy:  QUIT WHINING!

on the Zoro (Zach) Johnson topic

i highly doubt he stands in one spot in fact i know he doesnt because CAR doesnt have an offense that allows that to happen...plus what player doesnt stand with their arm up in the air outside the arch lookin for a skip pass...i havent seen one yet...he does hold his follow through up too long though...but if you dont want him to do it...its easy...just stop him from scoring ;)

OAS - I believe you were all over the overflowing anti-Sweeney bandwagon a few years back. Perhaps you, like Sweeney, have matured since then. But, like Peter Pan, I won't grow up (if it means being unable to air my gripes :) ).

Besides, the Gusties have six games to play this season and have already lost more MIAC games than they did the previous two combined. We aren't used to only being only 3 games better than Mac :)

Where's Crazy Carl to take advantage of his Carlies emerging as possible conference favorites?

PS - My old man team almost got in a fight and kicked out of the league last night. The commish had to rush onto the court twice to break things up. It was ridic, but I played no part in either scuffle.

One more thing to add today...

Obviously coach of the year honors goes to Kalland at Carleton, but if there was a runner-up, shouldn't that honor go to Kosmos? He's got a team that's a year away from being good in the hunt.

MM- Fritz shouldn't be considered. I could coach that much talent to a 13-2 record. Hell, if I was coach, we sure as hell wouldn't have lost to Auggie Tech.

miacwatchmen

When UST finishes the season at 18-2 or 17-3 a loss to AUG won't be as bad a thing. Piper don't you think everone is entitled to a let down once in a while especially when they throttle GAC twice and are the only team to clinch a playoff birth at this point in the season!

Who gave birth?

Willy,
Didn't know LOP was on your squad.

watchman - With 2 D2 transfers, 2 D1 transfers (including Sweeney) and 3 seniors filling out the rotation, UST was supposed to run away with the title. Instead, they got beat by cellar-dwelling Auggie at home and lost by 30+ to Carleton in a terrible display of basketball. The Knights, who started horribly, could still catch them.

I'm with PI on the one: NFLDers for the top two spots. I can't wait to see what funbb has to say about this :)

OAS - If I ever say I was in a fight, you know LOP will be involved somehow. Thankfully, he's not in this league.

Gusties,

You're obviously a little bitter that Gustavus is not the dominant team in the MIAC this year. Zach Johnson is one of the craftiest athletes that I've ever seen in the MIAC as a first-year player for Carleton. In the six or seven games I've seen the Knights this year, he is a solid shooter, but he finds a variety of ways to score. Maybe last night was an isolated case where he shot a lot of 3's, but he definitely doesn't mind driving the land and scoring inside. I don't notice whatever attitude he has that has been talked about on here. I've talked with him after games, and he's a great kid. But if I was a freshman averaging 20+ per game, I think that gives a reason to be a little confident in my own ability, and until he gets shut down, he's not going to change.

The scary thing is how the Tommies are trouncing the league but don't have even a single vote for the Top 25.  Does that mean the MIAC blows this year?

Gusties,

After taking the time to look at last nights CAR/GAC boxscore, it makes your whining about Johnson on here laughable. He took 15 shots from the field, and less than half of them were from three-point range (6), and he made four of them. If I could shoot that well from three, I'd shoot more there too. Give the kid the respect he deserves. He's been scoring 20 or more points per game it seems for about the last 6 or 7 games as a freshman, maybe more.

OAS-
Yes. Sorry beloved conference.

Hey, what's up with this online/offline thing? OAS and TH4L, get back to work, you're online.

I still haven't figured out the whole karma thing or CMob would have 100 because that guy cracks me up. LOP is Cheddar Bob.

Unfortunately, in the eyes of the pollsters - yes.  With the serious butt kicking the Tommies received from the purveyors of intellect in Northfield, the loss to Augsburg, along with the losses to UW-Stout & UW-LAX, the Tommies just don't look so hot.

Then when you look at Carleton, they lost to UW-LAX by an even greater margin than the Tommies. To get any respect on a national level, or D3Hoops poll, one of them will need to kick butt for the rest of the regular season & hopefully deep into the post season.

I believe next Wednesday, 2/8  the NCAA will come out with the first regional rankings & we'll see where our league leaders are ranked.  Some of the vets will know better than me, but I think our prospects are slim of placing two MIAC teams in the NCAA tourney.

While I agree that Guy is by far the most deserving of COY, you're math is a little off here, WW  :)....UST has only one D-I transfer (Ike); calling Sweeney a D-I transfer is borderline at best (and for as much as people ripped him on this board his frosh year, his UWGB experiment is null and void :)). The only d-2 transfer is Keating. If you're thinking Schnettler was a d2 transfer, you're calling the WIAC a d-2 league, because he wasted his frosh year at Superior.

If having 3 seniors in the lineup is a reason to eliminate a coach from consideration, then Fritz, Hanson and Smith better give back most of their COY awards.

Kalland deserves the honor, plain and simple. He's done a fantastic job with a good mix of talent (or do we eliminate him for having talented players?  :) )
