Since I already know the all conference selections...i will tell you that concordia has none and Forkrude is not the MVP.

We should clearly give a Most Valuable Poster as I would hands down win the award.

That is from an anonymous, knowledgable source who is not a Johnnie alum. Remember one year from now, you read it here first.

Filzen, Raiders stop Red Wing
Wednesday, February 15, 2006

By Brett Boese Sports Editor

Northfield's Zach Filzen torched Red Wing for six 3-pointers and 34 points in the teams' last meeting, so the Wingers tried a new strategy this time -- running a second defender at him whenever he got the ball. It proved futile.
The Raider junior, who entered third in scoring in the metro at 25.6 a game, scored 10 straight after the Wingers had taken the lead late in the second half. He finished with 30 points, including four 3-pointers, in leading Northfield past Red Wing 67-61.

Willy,

Is he D-III, D-II or D-I material?

Sounds like a plan, I'll bring the quarters.

Nites - Are you a cyber stalker or what? :)

To be honest, I'm really not sure where he'll fit in. The Missota Conference is really, really down this year, so his numbers look amazing against porous competition. I watched him play twice last year and have seen him three times this year and he's clearly gotten better...but his game is hard to translate — I'll try though :)

If you asked him to be a spot up shooter at the D1 level, I think he could fill that role quite well — his stroke is that sweet. However, he isn't a D1 athlete so defensively and rebounding he'd have some trouble I think. I could see him being a shooter off the bench who gets by on smarts.

I don't think D2 will even be an option for him. If he doesn't go D1, I'd expect to see him at either Carleton or Gustavus — he knows Hanson and his mother is the women's coach for the Carlies. In fact, I've had people who know he and his family tell me they expect to see him in the MIAC...however, scoring 25+ for two straight years is bound to garner some interest elsewhere. I'd expect nice things out of him if he follows this route.

WW,

Thanks.  Sorry, but not a cyber stalker.  :'(

I knew you'd have some pretty good insight on Filzen.  It sounds like he pretty much fits that classic mode of coach's kid - basketball savvy, fundamentally sound and a winner.  I suspect that he handles the ball well.  Does he lack the quickness to play point at a higher level?

I would expect him to go to Carleton if he goes MIAC.  Is Kalland a well-respected coach?  Of course, I believe his daughter played for and is now an assistant coach under Tammy.

Men's Basketball to host Thurs. NCAA playoff game

St. Thomas will host North Central (Ill.) Thursday night in an NCAA Division III first-round playoff game. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students. There's no advance sale and the doors open at 6 p.m. A sellout is unlikely in UST's 2,000-seat arena.

Thursday's winner will travel to Appleton, Wis., to play in the second round Saturday at 7 p.m. vs. 24-0 and top-ranked Lawrence (Wis.).

Nites - I've actually been less than impressed with his ball handling. He rarely goes left and prefers to pull up than take it take the tin. Good passer, but he'd have problems playing point.

Official ballots out today and Ike is the MVP as expected. Interesting twist to our Wittwer/Fredrickson debate -- Wittwer won the 6th Man Award, but Freddy made the All Conference team. The coaches must have been as split as we were on where to put each of them.

No real surprises otherwise, though I appreciate the coaches leaving Ike off the All Defensive Team even if it comes at the expense of Keating getting an award :)
