I thought your "Big Bopper" reference was to Josh Hinz, forward for Beloit College, and a fellow All American. Ive heard that moniker attributed to him before. Still, that post buzzed by me with no threat of being picked up. It was well above me..which certainly doesnt do much for my rep  :'(

Well Mose – what's worse, long-windedness or excessive hyperbole?  ;)

For example:

Migawd man, you not only put the cart in front of the horse, you don't even own the horse yet!  ;D  Your Tommies are absolutely going to be put to the test Thursday night against North Central, & you're daydreaming about possibly hosting the Sweet 16s after knocking off NC & Lawrence! And don't even get me started on #1 ranked Lawrence & All American Chris Braier!

I guess I better not tell you what airfares to Salem or hotel prices I've been finding, right? And how I lit candles in church asking that the fares are the same (or lower!!) in 2007 as they are this year.  ;D

But I'm not looking past NC....I was merely pointing out a hypothetical scenario. The first time UST hosted the mens Sweet 16 was not all that diffrent from the scenario I decribed that COULD happen...IF they win both games.

Braier sounds like a Paul Henrichs-type with more hyper-agression and a bit more of a Forkrud build. In the event UST gets past NC, I think Shimek/Keating can contain him enough for a "W" (notice I am not saying "shut him down")

Looking back thru the "Mose Archives" I discovered that Carleton's Luke Schmidt and Josh Wilhelm were All-MIAC first teamers as first-year players back in 1995-96. Of course, Schmidt transferred to Gustavus for the next season and both were four-time All-MIAC first team players. In fact, they were the last FYs to make All-MIAC.  that's as far as my archives go back, but if neither Karnell James or John Tauer made the All-MIAC as a FY, then I highly doubt any FY did.

THE GOOSE IS LOOSE!

Very exciting matchup tomorrow.  To drake and others who are concerned about the UST/NC matchup... put your fears to rest!  This is not the same UST team you are accustom to seeing.  In the past 6 years UST has had some good teams but didn't necessarily have the right "killer instinct" to carry themselves far in to the playoffs.  This team starts 3 inner city players that walk around with an attitude screaming "I don't give a F***" They play their best ball in big games, and they do the intimidating.  I am not trying to downplay the ability of NC, but go to sleep tonight knowing that tomorrow when Shoenecker Arena is packed UST is going to come out guns a blazin' and looking for blood.  These lads are out to hurt someone!

I don't. I think there's a VERY good chance we won't have to worry about it though.

bumknees - OAS found a game preview of GAC/LU last year and the Larry SID referred to him as The Big Bopper.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

ustbumkneez

Wow, Lawrences SID must be Braiers favorite person. Being saddled with the nickname "The Big Bopper"? Im sure hes thankful for the extra ammunition the SID gave opposing fans. Though, from the look of the stats, it doesnt seem to have affected him much. Alliteration never did much for me, however. If given the power to bestow horrible nicknames upon players, I would have gone with "The Hammer". Simple, yet forceful.

THE GOOSE IS LOOSE!

This team starts 3 inner city players

The Hall is inner city? Cmon. Does that mean that you get a City Pass? They may like to fancy themselves "inner city" players, but we both know its as suburban as you could get. It might be in StP, but "inner city" it is not. Please, those two have been telling you one too many rough & tumble stories of survival. The Old Guard is right there to back it all up.  ;D
Fun aside, they do have the mentality to make a strong NCAA run; its a gritty group, when pushed to the limit, and play to their best when the opponent is strong. Sweeney will have to be huge for them, and I think hes game.

To think, ustbumknees didn't even have to duck for that one to go way over his lanky 6-5 head. At least you didn't call him Mr. Braier though :o

I'm just astonished that all of you MIAC folk have spelled his name correctly. He's singlehandedly dominated the MWC for four years now, and yet half the people in the MWC room have butchered his name on a daily basis.

For those of you who haven't read the men's tournament preview on the front page of this site, I would highly recommend it.  A great read!  :D

According to the experts, Hope College from Michigan will beat UW-Whitewater in the championship game.  I've heard that UWW is a very good team that is loaded with city kids from Milwaukee and the suburbs.

It would also appear that the same people aren't picking UST or Carleton to win their first round game.  In fact, North Central is mentioned as a possible "Cinderella" team.
Should be a great battle tonight over in Tommie land.

I also noticed that Amherst College from Massachusetts was picked to make the Final 4, so I went and checked out their website.  Apparently there is a Minnesota connection, as former Bloomington Jefferson standout Dan Wheeler, a 6-5 junior forward starts for them and is their second leading scorer at almost 14ppg.  How did he get away from the MIAC schools?

Drake Palmer

Local - I saw UW-Whitewater play UW-Stout earlier this season & I wasn't overly impressed.  Based on how the rest of their season has gone, I'm guessing the game I saw was an aberration rather than the norm.  From reading the WIAC board, I get the sense that in some respects they're similar to UST - lots of talent but don't necessarily "bring it" every night.  In the Whitewater game against Stout, Stout was clearly the better team.

Dan Wheeler of Bloom. Jefferson was a classmate of SJU's Matt Ohme.  During the early 2000s' Bloomington Jefferson had a real nice run of talent & teams. Trent Tucker or Sarah Halvorsen could probably fill us in on where & why all the players ended up where they did – Brent (?) Augustine, Jon (?) Lien, Brian Sykora, John Vaudreuil (sp), (UMD) etc.   Wheeler has got a younger brother Steve, who is a senior this year & could be a nice MIAC addition next year.

from the front page preview that LoCo found so compelling: "And that's if Lawrence survives a tough second-round matchup, which could be against the team that won the automatic bid from the best league in D-III this season"

I see Pat's finally recognizing the MIAC's strength!!!!! ;D

And LocCO, that's Pat's opinion, not a panel of experts....granted, Pat is the guru of D3, but it is one man's opinion, just like yours or mine or any of the rest of us.

Willl you be gracing Schoenecker with your presence tonight or wait for the box score to be psted so you can retell the data to us?  :) ;D

I know several MIAC schools recruited Wheeler hard, but the "name" of Amherst is attractive, kinda like Haaah-vahhd, but a few grand a year less

UWW has won 11 of their past 12, and has picked up their play since an early season lull. Neither time the Warhawks played Stout did they put forth the kind of game that has become the norm for them over the month of February. I saw the Stout, RF and EC games, and I would agree with your assessment that Stout is the better team, because they put forth a more solid game every night. Stout isnt as hit and miss as WW has been over the course of the season. That said, Whitewater certainly has more talent and is a more dangerous team. The combo of Jeremy Manchester and Melvin Williams is hard to beat, WW needs to maintain their consistency to fulfill the "front page prediction".

Tell you what, a team like Carleton would give them fits. A good shooting, disciplined team that is scrappy-thats how EC took them to double OT in their last regular season game. If Carleton gets past Stout, I think they could throw a serious wrench in Whitewaters plans.
