pcoltrane, Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley all get invitations to my party. Kudos to anyone who recognizes that little ditty :)

larry_u - Ike has improved a ton since last season, so I'm not sure that statement holds water like it would have last year. He's still relatively weak — especially compared to Fork and The Big Bopper — but he's got some moves around the hoop now. Of the three bigs UST starts, I think Shimek stands the best chance to slow him down. If the Tommies get in foul trouble, The Bopper will eat the bench alive.

However, as I said before, I really don't think we'll be having this conversation tomorrow.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Well, I don't get it but it sounds like a heck of a party.

On the hopes that the Tommies with the guns show up tonight:

                                       St. Thomas 74, NC 68.

Ike can't let Simmons get him in foul trouble and Schnettler needs to be on.

I wonder if the Tommies would ever consider playing TEAM DEFENSE, which would greatly reduce any single players responsibility for 'shutting someone down'.  One player can't beat a good TEAM.  Oh, and larry... I am sure since you 'played' against Keating and Ike in high school that you have a very rigorous analysis of what kind of players they currently are, but unfortunately since in my estimation that pegs you at roughly the same age as them, and you have already posted 372 times, you have no credibility.  You are no better than Stephen A. Smith.  Actually, I take that back... you could conceivably take that as a compliment!

Prediction: UST by 6. After trailing most of the first half, the Tommies play an inspired second half of textbook basketball, and pull out the W. Schnettler drops 20+, balanced scoring amongst the rest in a offensive shootout.

In that case then, unless someone else is at home listening you'll have to sift through the usual suspects' serpentine, regurgitative posts tomorrow to find out what really happened.  ;)

WW (and anyone else who can't get the netcast of the NCC @ UST game), I'd advise you to hang around the CCIW In-game Updates board tonight. People listening in are very good about posting quickly and often in there, especially during big games.

AK47 – you bring up a good point regarding sound team defense & I think the Tommies are starting to get it.  I can think of two recent examples.

1) Keating/Shimek did a solid job against Zach Johnson in last's week championship game.  If I recall, Johnson was 3-13 from the floor.

2) In the waning minutes of the CARL UST game when the outcome was still hanging in the balance, one moment stands out for me.  (You might like this one Willy) Fork beats Ike off a post move & spins baseline.  It looks like a sure lay up for Forkrud & out of nowhere, Schnettler comes across the lane to contest the shot, forcing Fork to miss.  Does anyone else remember this?  In a game of big plays & big misses, this one stood out for me.   Absolutely huge defensive play & a great example of solid help defense!  Hopefully, there's more where that came from tonight.

Willy - I'll admit I did a Google on your lyrics.  Are you sure you didn't spend some time on the Augsburg campus?   ;)  I've gotta give you some begrudging props for being a devotee of Atmosphere.  I can't say that I'm a hip-hop kinda guy myself, but I'm impressed a guy from Rochester by way of Gustavus, listens to the gritty, urban sounds of Atmosphere, Slug & the whole Rhymesayers movement.

SUMMIT!!!!!

UST by a dozen tonight....phone  it in. Willy, if your cell # is the same (and I can find it in my clean car, I'll call you with updates)....at worst, I'll call you after every Keating dunk :D

Larry U--- even if you actually played against Keating & Ike (& by extension Sweeney) then you know your comments ae ridiculous. The 3 together have a nice synergy going, and factor in the Mad Bomber and SMooth Shim, and its "gee, that was a nice unbeaten run, Larry....good luck next year)

Well, Simmons can't afford to let Ike get Simmons in foul trouble either.  Simmons is an unusual find in Division III.  A big guy who can handle his own under the boards, he has a great mid-range shot and can also shoot the three.  If he is on his game, fans will see something very special tonight.  He is also a great passer.  He keeps the ball up as big guys should; but, when he shoots his jump shot he does not bring the ball down -- just goes up and shoots.  He is long.  His shot makes him really hard to defend outside the paint as he is more like a 6'9" than his listed 6'6"

However, if Simmons should get into foul trouble, the Cardinals are just not the same basketball team without him.  You fans at the game should notice a difference in North Central when Simmons is not on the court.

Other North Central notes for you fans who have not seen them play.  This is a very disciplined, efficient offensive team.  Not like the North Central teams over the past several years.

North Central coach is Todd Raridon came to North Central from Nebraska Wesleyan where he was head coach and an assistant for several years.  He is big on discipline, uses motion type offense sets, uses the full shot clock when having a lead and very good coach in the last two minutes of a close game.

This really sounds like SJU's game plan when they headed into UST all full of piss and vinegar in Jan. and they got the snott kicked out of them. It doesn't matter if you think you are a patient team when you play UST. They are pretty darn good about pestering you and making you rush things a little more than usual. I think the Tommies get by tonight by 8.

Watchman - That's a stretch of a comparison. There's a reason SJU is sitting at home right now in "down" year for the MIAC, while NC is in the tourney after finishing second in perhaps the toughest league in the nation.

If the Tommies advance to face the Larry's, they may enjoy the "Hot or Not" section in this week's Sports Illustrated. Check it out :)

Drake - You know how I roll :)

MM - I'm sure this is too late, but don't worry about it.
