Congratulations to the Tommies on an oustanding season. Sounds like it was a great game at Lawrence Saturday. The crowd situation at the end sounds unfortunate, but in the heat of the moment, with a game of that magnitude, I can't say I'm surprised. Sounds like Braier did his thing, but UST did everything it could to stay in hit. I also have to commend some seniors for sticking with the program, despite not getting a lot (if any) playing time for a majority of their careers. Berk Tas, Danny Peterson, Alex Weaver are class acts away from the court and swallowed a lot of pride to spend a majority of their four years making their impact in practice rather than games. Joey Shimek was also a guy, who got a lot of playing time, but was deserving of every minute. I don't think I ever talked to hiim after a game where he wasn't dripping wet from leaving everything he had on the court every night. Great year Tommies.

i echo my congrats to an outstanding st. thomas basketball team.   they are as good a team that the miac has seen in recent memory; and the fact that they lost last weekend to lu says only that lu is pretty d*** tough.   after ust's walk through the miac this year, (the three losses still a mystery to most of us; perhaps it was all in good fun to share the crown with car?)  with all due respect to the knights, ust was the best team in the miac.  and they clearly established themselves as a legitimate ncaa tournament team.   it will be interesting to see how far lu goes following their tough win over tommies.
as for the crowd, everyone was on the tommie fans all year for being so quiet.   so why aren't we excited that their fans were finally getting into it?!    the bottles were just plastic, right?    ???

First off, rest in peace Puck. You're were one of the greatest sport figures in my life. You were my hero growing up and today is a terrible day for the State of MN.

Thanks for 6 for 6 on my sixth birthday.

I say no money MM. It's too hard to collect when we won't see each other until the next cookout at Hamline next year.

Join in, should be fun to see if Westie is as good in this as he is at MIAC pick'em.

miacsuperfan,

bottles were plastic and no big deal.  I thought tommie fans were great.  They were loud for their numbers and good guests.    That is a long trip for one game.

Tommies were clearly a step up from the Gustavas team LU played last year in the tourney.  good luck next year.

Like PI did, I also have to get some thoughts out on Kirby Puckett even though it's not a D-III topic. That guy was the face of the Minnesota Twins, and is the epitomy of why people on this board love sports. He always went to the ballpark with a smile on his face, played the game as hard as anyone plays any sport and had a blast doing it. It's a sad day for Minnesota sports. We're gonna miss you, Kirby. "And we'll see ya tomorrow night." I swear I've seen that replay in game six a dozen times tonight. It'll never get old and it will always send a chill down my spine.

Its a sad day in Minnesota sports thats all I know. I was deeply saddened when I heard the news about Kirby. He will be missed.

Like all of you, I am overwhelmed by the loss of Kiiiiiiiirby PUCKitttttt. He was everything baseball is missing now-- he played from the heart, for the moment and for the joy. For all the enthusiasm he brought to the playing field, he gave back tenfold in happiness, joy and excitement. As someone fortunate enough to meet him and spend about 2 innings talking baseball and life with him one game He was funny, sincere, and humble. Those 15-20 minutes rank among my happiest memories in baseball.

He was a tough out but a fan's delight. Sure, he had his off-field troubles, but they only proved he WAS human, something we often forgot watching his incredible, un-human play.

Even though he said "Don't cry for me" when he announced his retirement, I guarantee you thousands of fans and other Minnesotans disregarded his words today...and rightfully so. Right now, I imagine he's sharing a good laugh with Zoilo, Allison, and Battey (old Twins would hang together) and reaching up, robbing Ruth of a HR and flashing that mega-kilowatt smile of his.

You mentioned the old Minnesota Twins.  I lived in rural Texas in the mid-1960's, but my grandfather lived in Fort Worth.  He took me to see the Fort Worth Cats in LaGrave Field in the AA Texas League.  I was too young to remember any of those players.  However, when the Minnesota Twins made the 1965 Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs in the new Turnpike Stadium their AA franchise, and my grandfather took me to a real minor league baseball game!

The main player from that 1965 Spurs team that I remember was Cesar "Pepe" Tovar.

SUMMIT!!!!!

Ralph- Tovar was a truly versatile player--- he was the 2nd player to ever play all nine positions in one MLB game, along with Bert Campenaris of Oakland. He was a slap/pray hitter who could find the gap, had extraordinary spped for his era (he was no maury WIlls but he was no Frank Howard on the basepaths, either  :)), as well as having great range in the OF, where he primarily played. I remember seeing many future twins play for the old St Cloud Rox in Class C (the lowest of the low minors)

Maybe the Twins/civic leaders/politicians etc can get the job done and build the Kirby Puckett Memorial Stadium, saving the Twins from potential-- as in highly likely-- contraction after this season. (and no, I haven't been hanging out with Sid!!)
