Hamline got one of the big guys they wanted as 6-9 Eric Gusaas from Richfield informed Wohler he was committing to the Pipers.

Ut oh Local, looks like you've been out scooped by Funbb!  ;)

I still contend he's going to be a work in progress much like Andy Cook over at Bethel.

And on another note, my congratulations as well to PI on his move closer to the motherland.   Now we'll have 3 MIAC school grads turned journalists working the Missota conference -- WW - Red Wing, TH4L - Northfield & PI - Hutch.

I'll take a 6-9 guy from a good program like Richfield anyday.

Like Hamline basketball's return to the glory of the playoffs this past season, congrats to coach Verdugo and the Piper baseball teams clinching today with a sweep over St. Mary's.

If I'm reporting what's already been stated earlier I'll apologize in advance, but learned that K. Eckhoff will NOT be coming back to play next season. I believe he'll be teaching (or student teaching?)...not sure on that account, but he is officially done......according to my sources!!

However, Linz will be playing.....which is big news for the Cobbers!

I've been gone alot, so didn't know if this had been talked about earlier or not.

For what it's worth, OAS - the newest YMCA employee! - and myself could still beat up TH4L and PI. Heck, I could prolly take them both myself :)

If that's the case, I wouldn't write him off just yet. If he's student teaching and has applied for the red-shirt as a precaution to changing his mind, I believe he's still eligible to play. I know a few guys did it for GAC football, though the timing of his student teaching would obviously effect his eligibility. If he plays his cards right, he could still change his mind the day before basketball starts next year, which I assume will become more and more tempting as the date approaches.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Note:  The following post is only in interest of keeping the board reasonably active.

PI – keep in mind this Gusaas kid was the 5th leading scorer on the Richfield team last season at 7 ppg, & this 6-9 post player was the 2nd leading rebounder on his own team.  So if you're expecting a FY major impact player, I doubt if he's your guy.

That being said, with Kyle Foster still around & some of the taller wing/post players that Hamline has – Thrasher, David Johnson et al, the Pipes can afford to bring him along gradually.  So by the time he's a junior, I think Gusaas could be a force in this league.  Just my opinion though.

He's a project but like they say you can't teach height. A 6'9'' kid two or three years down the road in this league with skills and some touch could be a force. I doubt if he will be the next Ike but it sounds like he could help them down the road.

This discussion about a 6-9 Hamline kid sounds scarily similar to the debate seen on these boards a few years back. I think we all know how that one turned out...

Drake, Thanks for keeping the conversation going.   ;)

Willy, Having watched Mr. Muenchow back during his days at St. Anthony Village, I can tell you that Erik Gusaas is ahead of where he was at this point in the career.  Paul had a little more athleticism than Erik does, but Erik can shoot out to    18-feet and has a variety of moves around the basket.  His biggest issue, based on what I saw this year (which wasn't a whole lot) is the same issue that Paul had.  Strength.  If he adds some muscle to his frame, I think that Erik will be a very strong interior player for the Pipers after a year or two.

Local - with Erik Gusaas's apparent commitment to Hamline, what does your "little bird" have to say about Nate Robertson, the other post player you mentioned that might be enrolling at Hamline?

It's been awfully quiet on the rollerskate circuit too.   I wonder if CMob's skates rusted over with all the recent rain?  News hasn't been traveling very fast out of the Carleton Cartel lately.  ;)  The last word I heard was Carleton or Hamline for Nate Robertson.

Willy, any word out of St. Peter other than the latest about the local escapee being finally apprehended?

Sounds like he just needs to get on the Barry Bond's "Juice Program" and he'll be tearing it up!

........relax boys, I'm just kidding!

Drake, I asked around yesterday and in an interesting turn of events, it sounds like Nate Robertson may now be leaning towards attending UW-River Falls.   I will keep you posted should I hear anything further.

The WIAC is definitely a great league, but the Falcons program hasn't had much success over the past few seasons and according to reports on the WIAC board, two of their best players may not be returning next season to play for the new head coach.  I would think that Hamline and Carleton would be better options for him  ???

Trying to understand the attraction for Minnesota kids to the WIAC schools. I assume being they are Dlll that they can't give scholarships for athletics. What is the typical cost to attend a WIAC school? Is that the main draw? They are significantly cheaper than MIAC schools?

Huh? UWRF won the WIAC title in 2003-04.

According to Peterson's Guide, annual tuition at UWRF is $4,968 for in-state students, and $15,014 for out-of-staters. If the reciprocity agreement between the state governments of Minnesota and Wisconsin is still in effect, then Minnesota kids would pay that $4,968 tuition rate at UWRF as well.

I'm not going to bother checking the tuition rates at the other WIAC schools, but I'm willing to bet that they're all the same or similar.
