Great commentary Drake and Fun  :D

Drake, I think that after next year we will be pretty close to mentioning Jon DeRock in the same sentence with guys like Schnettler and Eckhoff.  Obviously Isaac Rosefelt should win the MVP again next season, but I wouldn't be shocked after that to see DeRock and Zach Johnson battling it out as a junior and as a senior. (that is if the Carleton "sophomore slump" doesn't hit Zach like it did Tommy Drake)  ???

The question for Hamline is can they get any inside production from someone not named Kyle Foster, and can they actually play some consistent defense?  If so, the Pipers should contend up top with SJU and UST next season.

Coach....couldn't agree with you more regarding DeRock. He's a stud that will only get better.

Dang Cmob --  I know at one point I remember reading one of your posts when you wrote you weren't afraid of the smiters attacking your karma, but sheesh...

I thought you & Funbb were cool - a couple of drinks, a tripple burger, a porterhouse or two, chase a few fillies.. ;)

Speaking of attacks, I came across this article on another board I check out on occasion.  So a word to the wise for all you young journalists --

Naw, Cmob is the best. He likes to give me some smack cause I can eat more triple burgers and porterhouse steaks than he can! The mobster thinks he's a health nut, but I've seen him "OD" on triple burgers where he takes a big bite and the grease just flies all over the place!! Oh yeah, he's a beauty, especially with the ladies....a real casanova!

Regarding DeRock....I just think his upside is huge. Maybe he'll have a soph jinx too, who knows? But after one year, I like his game.....now we'll see what kind of leader he can be. HU has a history of becoming unglued at various stages and if they want to be a big time contender for championships, then they need to find an equalibrium (sp?) to their mental approach to each and every game. So far, I haven't seen anyone on the Pipers team with the ability to step up and be a leader.

UST's seniors demonstrated great leaderhip last year; GAC has had it in the past....last year they did not; Carleton, especially with the Fork man gone, needs to find it as well; SJU has people capable, let's see if those individuals can/will step up.

My point is, without great leadership, and it doesn't have to be seniors but usually is, you're just another MIAC team and will go no further than the first round or two in post season play.

In my quest to keep this board active in the off season, I have two pieces of "recruiting scuttlebutt" to offer up.

1) Carleton is apparently getting a guard from St. Bernard's named Jeremy Sutherland.

2) St. Thomas is apparently getting a guard from DeLaSalle named Teddy Archer.

Local – you ought to change your name to Man of La Mancha –
"This is my quest, to follow that star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far..."  Good find on your basketball news quest.   ;)

Jeremy Sutherland ought to be a good pick up for Carleton.  He's about 6-2 or 6-3, athletic, quick, with a decent to very good jumper, & decent defender.  He'll add some athleticism & scoring punch out on the perimeter for the Knights over the next 4 years.  From what I've seen, he should be a more than capable replacement for Brian Sharkey.  He can beat his defender from the outside with the J, & is capable of blowing by his defender off the bounce.  Or, they could work him into the lineup behind the very athletic soph to be Jay Melson who might be the heir apparent for the 2G spot.

Sutherland was the 2nd leading scorer on a very talented St. Bernards team that was picked by many prep touts as the team to win the Class A state championship this spring.

Teddy Archer comes from a very solid basketball program at DeLaSalle, & they won the high school state Class AAA championship this spring.   I think he's around 6-2, is a fundamentally solid, athletic defender, but not much of a scorer.  Of course, part of his lack of scoring could have been Coach Dave Thorson's style of ball at De, & their manic, suffocating, defensive pressure system.  DeLaSalle beat highly favored St. Thomas Academy & U of MN prized recruit Bryce Webster in the state semis, & Duluth East with Iowa State bound Corey Johnson in the state finals.  An aside, Johnson's older brother Ryan will be a junior at Cord next year on the basketball team.

Archer & junior to be Lonnie Robinson could be one of several candidates that might step into the role for the Tommies as defensive stopper/athletic freak ala Alex Weaver.

Scary....more Weaver-like talent at UST. He amazed me and it sounds like this Archer kid could be a defensive stopper for the Tommie? They have everyone they need to score (i.e. Ike and Schnettler) so does that mean this kid will be the ball hawk?

Watch - I wouldn't get too concerned about this Archer kid yet.  If the Tommies go this route I'd put my money on Robinson stepping in & taking over the Weaver like minutes, if not more.

Off the top of my head I would think an initial Tommy lineup for next year would look like the following -

Pg - Andy Dwyer - Brian Sames
SG - Brian Schnettler - Robinson
SF - Mike Keating
C - Ike
PF - Al McCoy??

And you know Fritzie, don't make him go more than 6-7 deep.   :D

I meant to put a post on this board last week about keeping an eye out for Teddy Archer if a MIAC school picked him up. I've known the kid since he was about 12, and the early synopsis on him is basically right. I'd be surprised if he saw the floor as a freshman, but he could be an impact player by his sophomore year, unless the Tommies get plagued by injuries or foul trouble next winter. He's not going to be another Alex Weaver. Archer is taller and will likely hit the weight room and get bigger at UST. He's closer to 6-4, and will be a menacing defensive presence who can also handle the ball if need be. I see him being a small forward in the MIAC. His biggest upside is that if the Tommies ever get committed to a full-court press, he'll be like flies on sh** on the ball, that's what Thorson is all about at DLS, and that's why they won a state championship this year, nobody could handle their press and ball pressure. I loved his athleticism at the state tournament, but this will be a kid who does everything that doesn't show up in a boxscore that helps a team win.

funballer-

all i can say is...

you are the king of the tripple burger...you introduced me to it and i was baptized in a tub of left over grease from that burger that goes down in the history books with the name "The Big Nasty"...

...

on a side note...the dark stormy night when i OD on the tripple burger they rushed me to the hospital and remove a saringe full of grease from my blood stream

Have one thing to add, but it isnt recruit-related, but coach-related. Heard through my Bird Island "birdie" that Barry Wohler had to have an emergency gail bladder surgery of some sort. I guess he is fine, but it was lucky he realized he needed to get to a hospital quick, so he called his wife. Hopefully Mr. Wohler is alright and back on his feet soon.

Goodbye Renville County, hello Hutchinson. Started at the Leader today, have to have an issue out Monday by 5pm. I guess I'll just whip something together. I'm sure the Tigers whopped up on Northfield or Red Wing in the past few days.

PI,

Sorry to burst your bubble, but from my recent memory, not much on the high school scene out there to be praising, at least not at Hutch. Your girls golf team stinks, but on the upside, your boys baseball team is probably going to win the conference. Glad to hear that you're up and going at the Leader. We'll have to help each other out when the opportunity presents itself, much like WW and I do with Nfld/RW matchups. Good luck in Hutch, and hit up the Lamplighter sometime. (I have a friend from college that works at 3M out there, that's about the only decent sports bar in that city!)

Speaking of Barry Wohler news...perhaps Loco would care to enlighten the regulars with a few of his boy's latest, um, missteps? Seems they've given the league office a few extra paperwork assignments and are lucky Myles Brand is an idiot who cares naught for D3 athletics.

I'm sure inquiring minds want to know the nitty gritty details that you've surely run across in your "recruiting scuttlebutt" talks. Or, as whispers, halftruths, speculation and conjecture has it, were directly involved in yourself.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.
