Ben Kessler- it got real ugly. I was there watching a friend graduate and he went on a 10-15 minute tear that had nothing to do with the class of 2006. Topics covered: professors and students (not together, professor-professor, student-student) who live together but are not married, birth control, an apparent food fight at the cafeteria...others, I'm blanking. He got booed, students and professors walked out. No one had the decency on stage to tap him on the shoulder though. Very disappointing. Ruined a great day for many students.

Sat in front of Shimek's parents.

Local, Here is the story from this mornings STRIb aout the UST flap.

http://www.startribune.com/462/story/448725.html

Drake, from what I have heard and seen the CORD recruiting process, at least locally, is very scattered. One would think they would have the NW corner of the state locked up (for what that's worth) rarely do you see any one from there, at games. This is the complete opposite of the FB program. Horan is very visible in the local schools. I heard from a coach locally that said they do a lot of recruiting in SD. Looking at their roster it doesn't appear they have been very succesful in their efforts.

Local, Funbb or Cmob correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Flom the 3rd EP head basketball coach in the past 6-7 years?

Erickson had been the EP coach for a number of years and stepped down for reasons unknown. The gentleman that replaced him was there quite a number of years...took a lot of heat....then took a job in Georgia. Erickson reapplied and got the job which he held for about the past 4-5 years...I think. His son is graduating this year so he probably felt it was a good time to step down.

So, your assessment that Flom is their 3rd coach in the past 6-7 years is accurate.

I also think in Willy speak a "cut GACer" is referring to a player who was cut from the Gustie basketball team by the coaches.

Well, if this is the case, this wouldn't apply to me either as I didn't attend GAC.   ;)

Sumander – I don't think the Cobbs have a monopoly on the talent in western & NW MN, but I think they do alright for themselves.  If you look at their roster the majority of their players if not key players, are from NW & NC MN.  Starting west of St Cloud around Eden Valley, draw a line north & south of there & then travel NW to Moorhead.  Soren Nelson was from Twin Valley, Eckhoff from Alex, & Luke Linz Eden Valley.  The Cobbs also had a big post player who injured his knee before the start of the 04-05 season who was from Watertown, SD (?).

Basketball recruiting for any MIAC school is tough, but I would think it would be especially challenging for schools like Cord & SMU who are the furthest away from metro area.  To be successful, coaches from both schools need to put in a lot of windshield time.  This is not like football where you can potentially find multiple prospects at one school, hang out & BS with the high school football coaches.  If you look any MIAC football roster I can practically guarantee you'll find players that are from the same high school or neighboring school or town.

Funbb - I never mistook you to be a GACer, but more of a Koz devotee.   ;D

Drake-

Linz isn't from Eden Valley. he is from Watkins, ther better half of that district...hometown of Gene McCarthy, Mandy Pearson, Matt Stommes of the Gophers, and yours truly. We Watkinsites  get along fine with our neighbors to the west, but do not like being cofused with Eden Valleyites  :)   (Also for the record, Watkins is more or less south of St. Cloud--- follow Couty Road 2 from St. Joe thru Cold SPring, wave at Rocori High, proceed 10 miles and you stumble onto the 3 blk long main street). Stop out in early August for Kraut & Wurst Daze-- it makes the Aquatennial look lame.

As good as Luke is, I think his youjnger sister may be better  (does that sound famiiliar WW?  ;D) She was an All-Stater this winter as a freshman.

That said, I dont think it can be said that Cord has a monopoly on EVW grads-- wheil they landed Mandy & Luke, Alex Neisen, a teammate of Luke's, is at SJU, Neissen's dad (SJU) and unlce (St O). several Watkins kids have played baseball for SCSU and SW Mo St, and Shane Henfling is a soph QB at Carleton. Not bad for a town of "650 people and a few crouches" as the billboard welcoming you to Watkins used to proclaim, until they won the town team state baseball championship in 01.

After watching the Kessler speech clip on the Pioneer Press site, it didnt seem to be as big of of deal as the Strib made it out to be--- far from a "near riot"... still, the comments were iout of place at a commencement speech, unless given at Falwell's school  :)

My bad Mose.  For us city folks sometimes it easy to over look the 2nd or last name in one of those hyphenated school districts such as Eden Valley – Watkins.   ;)

Since we're clearing the record – in my earlier post I was speaking in generalities of the Cobbs' recruiting area, not specific counties, back roads & highways.  For the details I'll defer to the experts.

But more or less, Cord's recruiting territory begins slightly west of St. Cloud & heads out west to the Dakotas, & then concludes with the mountain men & their kinfolk from Montana.  ;D

Drake, You are probably right about the difference between recruiting for FB v. BB. Horan is looking for numbers. I just don't see or hear much about the CORD coaches being at games. Granted around the holidays they get to see a bunch of teams play right at their fieldhouse in a Christmas tourney.

lighten up a tad Drake... while EV may come first in the district's name. Watkins has the larger population (altho EV has the 'gentleman's club' while Watkins has a nursing home  :()  If we country bumpkins are supposed to know that Robbinsdale Armstrong and Robbinsdale Cooper aren't even in Robbinsdale, you city slickers should at least look at the name of the kid's hometown as it appears on the roster   :)

Back in the day, Watkins didnt even belong to a public school district. Kids from town went to St. Boniface High in Cold Spring. When the bishop of St. Cloud closed SBHS, there was a lot of had feelings betwen Watkins and the other three towns in Rocori (ROckville, COld Spring and RIchmond-- so it is not "Cold Spring Rocori" as some tv/radio morons call it) and Watkins was jammed into what had been the Eden Valley district.

Enough ancient history..... any word whether the NCAA wkill be reprimanding Hamline or will they wait till the RW Rep Eagle runs its expose and then be forced to take drastic action?  :D

It sounds like the D-I potential transfer isn't switching to a MIAC school, much less to UST....UST palyer to watch next year might be Sames. I see him filling the Weaver role off the ench

Weel, it seems I've struck a nerve with this Eden Valley Watkins topic.  Unintentional blunder, but thanks for the Meeker county history lesson.  I have the county right - right?

So in keeping with your advice -

naw, Drake....just making sure the hometown lad gets proper credit for his roots....they have a few excellent MIAC-caliber prospects coming up thru the system...2 are rising seniors this fall if my memory is right....guess I need to trek out and see this winter

Sheesh, a guy actually works a night (and goes golfing) and the boards blow up!

When my expose comes out, I'll be sure to ask someone other than MM to proofread it. I don't want such things as "youjnger...famiiliar...unlce...iout...wkill...palyer...ench" to appear in my final product. Keep'em coming, Mose :)

The Gusties recruiting class should be its best in a few years -- as it had to be, with the cupboard all but bare -- though I'm short on names right now. They are very happy with their top 5 players and got the top prospect on their list -- a 6-2ish shooting guard from Hollerich's hometown. I've been told he'll see action right away with an outside chance to start, though I don't know anything about his game. They also have a 6-7ish post they are excited about, though he isn't expected to see significant time for a year or two.

My memory fails me on the last three, much as Wohler's did with regards to the NCAA rulebook.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Your 6-2 ish 2G would be Jesse Van Sickle, Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial.  He played in the coaches' All-State games last month.  Other than that I have no further insight on the kid or his game.

By the way – a member of this year's PPress All Defensive team has decided to take his game over to UST.  That would be 6-4 Josh Peltier, yet another Cretin grad.   It'll be interesting to see if he can continue the success that Cretin players have enjoyed at UST.   However, he's not in the Sweeney, Tauer, or even Keating's category --yet.

Understand that We really don't know who is going where until they enroll and show up on campus in August. What I would like to see ( if any one is keeping track) is a compilation of the MIAC schools and the recruits we believe will be attending those schools in the fall.

I would think that would be a good project for any of you sportswriters!  ;D

Thanks in advance if to any one willing to do the leg work on this.
