Thanks Drake...tough way to end a career, especially for as good as he was.  And yes the Cobbers will miss him dearly!

Sorry for the randomness...Vikings season just gets me so excited!  Especially after beating the Redskins the way they did last night...there is finally a reason to be excited!! ;D ;D

A little birdie says former Piper coach Dan Perrel continues his move north on Snelling Ave. No word on new assistant coaches yet though.

So PI - are you taking on the posting style of LocalCoach, or the ahem, "borrowing" style of Charley Walters, columnist for the Press?

If I recall from Perrel's bio - he attended a Bible college in the south, so landing at a school such as Northwestern or Bethel might not be a stretch.  Some might say from the "godless"  (MAC) to the "god-fearing" (NW or BET).  Also, if Perrel does end up at either one of those schools, I'll let our board curmudgeon (WW -  ;) ) speculate as to what may have caused the split between Perrel & Wohler.

Sorry, should've said, Perrel moves up to the northernmost Snelling Ave. MIAC school. No speculation why he made the move.

Curious...

are there any former MIACs playing over in Europe or Australia?

Ben Van Thorre was over in Germany I believe. Not sure if he's still doing that. He's the only MIAC player I was aware of.

Jared Swanson is playing in Australia.

I have been going to open gyms over at Bethel lately...Perrel has been at most of them.  Players that I have talked to already seem to like him a lot.  What is his coaching history?  Besides being at the Pipers last year of course.

From Hamline Sports Information Director Troy Mallat's (who, by the way is a hell of a guy, and I can bet is a great dad and husband) press release:

"Prior to joining the Hamline staff, Perrel was the top assistant at Macalester College for two seasons (2002-04). There, he coordinated the Scots' defense. In the 2003-04 season, Perrel helped Macalester to a second-place regular season finish and MIAC Tournament Championship game appearance. Macalester set a school-record for most wins in a season with 18.

Perrel served as an assistant coach at St. Olaf College from 2000-02. He coordinated the Oles' defense as well as helped with recruiting.

He was also head coach at Watertown-Mayer High School from 1996-2000. In 1999, Perrel was named Section Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association. In that year, Perrel led his team to the 2AA State Championship game. His team also made two other appearances in the Sectional Championship game and won the Wright County Conference championship in 2000."

Semi-MIAC related news:

Timberwolves name Rob Babcock and Fred Hoiberg as Assistant GM's. Might see Rob in the stands come this winter watching Chris play for the Pipers.

Here's what I can offer on Coach Dan Perrel.  He has made stops in the MIAC at St. Olaf, Macalester, Hamline, and now Bethel.  I must say that he is a great teacher of the game and I have heard nothing but positive things about him from those in the coaching ranks.  I'm not sure however why he made the move down Snelling Ave. to Bethel  ???

PI - I heard this week that the new Piper assistant coaches are Brady Larson, son of well known and long time St. Francis H.S. coach Ron Larson, and Jamie Rusthoven, who has coached at Mpls Southwest H.S., Concordia-St. Paul, and most recently Minneapolis Community College.  I believe that Larson was an assistant coach the past few years at a Division II school in Michigan.

On another note, Andy Gilbert was one hell of a player at Bethel!  I loved watching him play.

Sort of a random question there B34.   I don't think you've  posted since last basketball season & you ask about Keith Eckhoff & the Vikes in your first two post back?   :)

Sumander or someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but the last we heard on the board is that the Big E decided to forego a medical red-shirt to enter the world of work.  Apparently he's teaching EL ed. in Detroit Lakes this school year.  The Cobbs will certainly miss him.

Drake, you are spot on! Eckhoff is teaching 3rd grade in DL and was hired as an assistant in the Boys BB program
