Story from today's SC Times on Matt Ohme

Nice piece on a great player. If we were to rank the top PG in the league who do you think would be number one?

i would say Ohme would have to be considered #1, probably followed by Jake Phillips, Steve Banick, Andrew Olson and then Sam Weiner rounding out the top 5...although i think you could put banick, olson and weiner in any order

Until the season gets under full sway, it looks like the daily coffee klatch club consists of Sum, Watch, D3BO & me.  :)

Here's my two cents worth.  I've loved watching Ohme play since his days running point for one of the best "teams" to not win a state title - Bloomington Jefferson.  They had some tremendous talent on that team including Ohme, Dan Wheeler now starring for Amherst, #3 ranked in the D3 hoops preseason rankings; John Vaudreuil at UMD, Brian Sykora, Brent Augustine etc. When Ohme is "on", he's a treat to watch.  But, when he's not...

In my opinion, in the past three years he's not consistently performed at the level, or developed as much as his talent would seem to otherwise indicate.

So just looking at statistics, I think you almost have to go with the cool, steadying leadership & play of Jake Phillips at Carleton.  Argue & debate away, but here's what I see when I look at last year's conference statistics.  Numbers on the left hand indicates conference ranking if any.

SCORING

# 11 Phillips - 13.5 ppg
#30 Ohme - 9.9 ppg

Banick - 9.5ppg
Wiener - 8.0ppg

FT%

Phillips – 88.5%
Banick – 82.9%
Ohme – 74.5%
Wiener – 60.7%

FG%

Ohme – 48.1%
Phillips - 47.7%
Wiener – 44.7%
Banick – 38.2%

3GA%

#3 Phillips – 46%
Banick – 37%
Wiener – 33%
Ohme- 22.9%

ASSISTS

#1 Wiener – 4.55 apg
#3 Phillips – 4.45 apg

#7 Banick – 3.10 apg
#8 Ohme – 3.05 apg

STEALS

#3 Banick – 1.90 spg
#8 Wiener – 1.65 spg
Phillips – 1.1spg
Ohme – 0.90 spg

Assist /Turnover Ratio

#3 Phillips – 89/54 - 1.65
#4 Wiener – 91/65 - 1.40
#6 Ohme – 61/51 – 1.20
#8 Banick – 62/66 - .09

Out of 7 categories, Phillips is the highest ranked returning PG in 4 categories – scoring, FT%, 3FGA, & Assist/turnover ratio.

Drake beat me to it....

On Paper phillips looks tops.

I love stats, and maybe I'll try to create some sort of effeciency scheme.  But in addition to that, it will be interesting to see who steps up and runs their team better.  Will Ohme realize he was a 23% 3 point shooter?  Will Phillips be the key to a succesful Carelton squad???

Speaking of PGs & assists, several of my favorite offensive plays - the drive & dump by the PG to a bigg for the easy bucket, or drive & kick it out for the open wing to nail the trey.  Sean Sweeney had this down cold.

Or, one of my other favorite moves, the Princeton style backdoor cut & feed that Keith Eckhoff & the Cobbs used to run. The Gusties typically do an excellent job running that look as well & will make you pay if you over play them on D.

...Sounds like for the starting five to begin the season will be Linz, Baldwin, Boike, Citterman, Johnson.  With Schulz and Dyshaw coming off the bench.

CC plays MSUM on next tuesday to start off the season, with a new addition of Josh Downey as an assistant coach.Like I said it should be an interesting year and after UST at the top it could be wide open when the conference season starts.

This could be good news!  In the name of Pace Picante Passanate, could this be, will it be, the triumphant return of the King to the board?  ;D

I am insulted that I wasn't included in this club... :'(

With the banishing of JV programs throughout the league, what are the chances D3 ball will start considering the option of red shirting Freshmen??

Surprised I didn't notice this when I got the press release, but MIAC PP poster GACSuperfan was honored as Coach of the Year for leading his Auggie men's soccer squad to a 13-3-3 record, their best since 1975.

Congrats Holker!

Drake, I went to test a theory about Ohme's 3 point shooting and discovered something I thought was interesting. The last 14 games of the year after he switched back to the point he was 3-25 or 12% beyond the arc. Prior to that playing the 2 guard he was a respectable 11- 28 or 39% from 3 pt land.

Must have been getting more uncontested looks at 2 than 1?

Bet34- The NCAA has made ti illegal to "redshirt" freshman...there are still medical redshirts, although there is rumor that those may be done away with for D3 as well...i think that is absolutely ludacris, but we'll see what happens...teams might start doing what a lot of the WIAC teams do and have their freshman practice with the team up until the first game of the year and then have them practice on their own to keep that year of eligibility

Sumander, you make a great point.  I agree that you don't get as many open looks as a point gaurd, but a lot of it also has to do with your legs.  Playing both point gaurd and wing in college, my legs would get tired much quicker when playing the point then when playing a wing.  At the point gaurd position, bringing the ball up court with pressure on you and then gaurding their pointgaurd full court can be very taxing on you legs then which makes shooting the ball a lot tougher.   But when playing in the wing position, you do a lot more standing around waiting for the ball to get across half court on both sides.

Also, I think it is the mentality of it.  As a point gaurd you are focusing on getting the ball entered and running the offense.  But as a wing, you are focusing on being a scorer and coming off picks looking to shoot.

Did his points go down also once he took over as PG??

Sorry Bet34 – I forgot to include you.   ;)

Those who are closer to the situation like Willy & Mose can speak to the JV issue, but it's my understanding that's it's just a one year anomaly because of the alternating male/female scheduling issue this year.  This should be the last year the schools will schedule with this arrangement -- with the guys scheduled to play the weeknight varsity game at 5:45Pm, & the women scheduled for the 7:30Pm tip-off.

Do you know why they made it Illegal for D3 but ok for all other divisions???  Why the bias against D3???
