big time win for Bethel tonight 113-83 over Dakota State...6 Royals scored in double figures led my Tim Madson's 31, definitely the best game of his career...and Mr. Moberg had a nice Bethel debut with 11 pts and 10 boards

should be an interesting game tomorrow against River Falls who knocked off William Penn in what I would consider to be an upset, although maybe this River Falls team is for real...we will find out tomorrow

GO ROYALS!

Hamline 91 Colorado College 84...a little too close for the Pipers...this is a Colorado College team that was 7-18 last year, lost their top 2 scorers, and doesn't have a kid above 6'4" on the roster...CC might have played out of their minds, or maybe Hamline didn't play up to par, or both...but whatever the case is, Hamline better get it figured out because they will lose once they face better teams, especially when they get into MIAC play

A young, guard-orientated team that finished well below .500 a year ago barely beat a sub-par team in its opener? Call me crazy, but mayhaps the bandwagon filled up a little too fast. I only saw them play twice last year, but can someone (besides Loco) please explain to me how this team any better that the fun-n-gun Bethel teams of the last six or more years?

I'd bet my bottom dollar Bethel34, tjones33 and Jacobs were/are better than DeRock, Thrasher and puffy-coated Foster. Heck, they even have Gusaas to play the less talented version of the older Moberg off the bench :)

Anyone care to guess the highest those Bethel teams ever finished in the MIAC race? Do you really think Bethel 0.5 can do any better?
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

very well put willy...i definitely agree that this Hamline team doesn't have the skill that those Bethel teams had...so I agree with you that they are going to have a hard time being successful with a similar system...hopefully they can make adjustments so they can put some pressure on the top teams in the MIAC...and if they can't play defense I don't care how much they can score...they just won't be able to outscore teams like UST, Bethel, Carleton and St. John's

i don't know if anyone noticed, but i think Mr. Rosefelt sent a message to his critics tonight...his line against Oxy-

38 minutes...33 pts...16 boards...4 assists...3 blocks...15-22 from the field...an unreal performance

but let's not forget about the other 2 guys...schnettler with 22 and keating with 12 and 6

if the boys play this well throughout the year I would have to say that they would definitely be considered a favorite to reach the final four and possibly win it all

Haven't checked any MIAC box scores yet, but found this little nugget.

QuoteDavid Johnson scored 33 points and Ridgewater College overcame a 13-point first-half deficit to defeat Hibbing Community College 88-76 on Friday in the Warriors' opener. Johnson also stabbed 13 rebounds.
...

"They had no answer inside for David Johnson," said Knutson. "I thought he always played two inches taller, but today he played like he was 6-9."

So the Spicer kid could play a little ball when given the chance.

That is a nasty line!! Wow, IKE for MVP, no doubts the award is his to lose this year.

Report from an Occidental fan at the Tommies' game:
- Rosefelt clearly lived up to his All-American props. Lithe but sneaky quick.
- Oxy pulled within one with three minutes left, but Scnettler drained a clutch three; game over. Deadly long-range shooter who keeps defenses from packing it in low.
-Keating was impressive, though most of the damage he did was early.
- Nice defensive adjustment in the 2nd half kept Oxy's All-American candidate, Sam Betty, from getting many good touches down low.

All in all, a well-played DIII affair with two talented teams. (The game, by the way, was NOT a true home game for Oxy. Due to a scheduling conflict, the game was played at the University of LaVerne some 30 miles from the Oxy campus.)

Best wishes to the Tommies as the year progresses. Your team is talented and well coached. Perhaps we'll meet again down the line!

My fellow posters, first of all let me state I am a fan of D3 basketball & more specifically the MIAC.   ;D And while I have personal favorites within the league, I generally enjoy watching most all the teams.  Other than a parent, who else would sit through the misery of watching the first game between SMU & Augsburg last year?

Anyway with that being said - a few thoughts.  I'm a huge fan of Isaac Rosefelt, but that doesn't mean I wear blinders while watching him play.  His stat line from last night was quite impressive but against what caliber of opponent?  If he put up those type of numbers against Joe Werner from UW-LAX, Chris Braier from Lawrence, Zach Freeman from Ill Wesleyan etc.  I'd be one of the first in line touting him for POY type honors.  As it turns out, a hoops acquaintance of mine whose opinion I value was at the UST & Oxy game last night & promised to send me a game recap, & specifically compare Rosefelt vs. Betty, Braier, Freeman comparisons.

I'm with Wonka on the Hamline & Bethel comments.  So far during the Wohler admin., it appears the Pipes are doing the Southside version of the "Snelling Shuffle" which was perfected by the Fun-n-Run bunch - Bethel Royals.  Otherwise known as the "The best Defense is the Best offense" approach.

I think Willy is also right on the DeRock, Thrasher vs. Jones, Gilbert comparisons, but with one exception.  Barring injury, DeRock could be a very special player in this league before his career is done.

A friend of mine was at the Bethel game & he said as usual Bethel's transition defense was shall we say – left a lot to be desired.  Due to superior players, & depth (Dakota State only suited up 9 players), Bethel was able to run their inferior opponent out the door.  Bethel needs someone like T Jones to suit up in a bad way if they want to push into the upper levels of MIAC contenders.  Their frenetic pace of ball basically neutralizes having two of the biggest players in the league in Moberg & Cook.

Moberg's got a lot of talent, shooting touch, & he's left-handed to boot, which should give him a decided advantage, but too often it seems he would settle for the turnaround jumper rather than doing the drop step & go strong to the basket. However, the season's still young...

It could be a very interesting championship game against a young, scrappy, quick & physical UW-River Falls team.   I might have to see if I can make it over there tonight.

Big win for UST.

Ike looked very good.  Cleary this Sam Betty (pre-season player of the year in their conference) kid didn't have a chance.  Ike dominated him on both ends of the floor and Betty had the quietest 20 pts I've ever seen.  Bryan was solid, 6-11 from deep.  He had a few open looks that he usually doesn't miss and after the game he was a bit frustrated he didn't hit those, but that's Bryan.  Mike was the man as usual.  The box score had him for no assists, but he had at least 3 or 4, a couple great dimes to Ike.

Dwyer and Tuma did a nice job running the point getting the ball to the right people especially in their first "real" game.

Lonnie and BJ had typical first game outings. I think they were both a little nervous and trying to get a feel for the game.  They are going to need more production out of those two in the future, 0 pts isn't going to cut it. I'd expect both to be more aggressive tonight.

Baker and Shimek barely played, but the got a few minutes in. Ike had a nice dumpdown to Shimek for a layup.  Good vision by Ike.

I would expect Tuma, BJ, Baker, Henningtion, and Shimek to play a lot more tonight as the team they play tonight isn't as good as Occidental.

Overall, impressive win, a lot of room for improvement.

Interesting note: Occidental rarely ever doubled Ike in the post and Ike just took advantage of Betty, hitting jump shots in the middle of the lane and a nice spin on the baseline.  When they did double, rarely, (with Schnettler's guy!) Ike kicked it back out and Bryan had wide open looks.

More info to come after the game tonight,

Bow - I take it you were there at the game & you've been a part of the Tommie squad the last few years.  When you get a minute, give us your perspective on how this Betty kid compares to the other post players I've mentioned - Werner, Braier, etc. ?  Ike's struggled with physical type of players in the past & they've been able to negate his length & quicknesss with their physical strength.  To go deep into the post season, Rosefelt is going to need to be able to stare down these type of opponents for the Tommies to be successful.

Another Shimek? Wasn't there a Shimek last year too??  ;D

Gusties up 6 with 7 to play. Just turned it on, so no feedback as yet.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Willy Wonka

Wow.

Luther cuts it to one. Tyler Kramer, GAC's starting PG, then hit a 3 and Wittwer added a short jumper. Kaus 1-2 from FT, gets two straight offensive rebounds and hits a 3 for a 4-point possession. Kramer hits his third 3 off another Kaus board to make the lead 74-61.

I've missed a few plays in there, but those were the big moments in the run that should secure the win for Gustavus.

GAC shot 57.1% from FT and had 22 TOs??  Very uncharacteristic of GAC b-ball.
