Story from today's Fargo Fool-Em on Cord. They open the season tonight against Moorhead State. Sounds like the Cobbs are going big.

I still think the Cobbers are going to be good this year. Linz does have the ability to carry that team.

I just want to go ahead a say right now that UST will be the hands down winner of the MIAC.  They return three of the best seniors in the Conference, and they have the best player in Isaac Rosefelt.  Rosefelt will be flirting with an average of 30ppg when the season is over with, and he has the size and athleticism that can't be defended.  Senior Bryan Schnettler will once again be lights out from the arc, and Mike Keating will add rebounding power and points in the paint.  This season has all the promise of something special if these three individuals come together as a team and play consistent.  Coach Fritz will guide this crew into the playoffs and hopefully a title run.

Does anyone know who the favorites in the IIAC are this year?  Typically, it seems to be Buena Vista & Wartburg vying for top honors.

Coe, BV, Simpson, Loras, Wartburg in that order, were the pre-season picks in the conference release.  BV has won 5 conference tournaments in a row and last year they did it with mainly freshmen playing.

Dang Jimmy Chitwood!

While I agree UST will win the conference and they have the best seniors, 30 ppg would be an amazing feat! Holy Cow!

Consider the fact that Ike will more than likely be double teamed at least half the time he gets the ball in the post, I think him averaging 5 assists would be better for UST.  Everyone gets involved and that is what you want.  Ike isn't the type of guy who is going to be shooting out of double teams all the time, he's going to hit the open guy. He wants W's! Granted that if the double teams don't come or come late he could have some big games, but for a whole season 30 ppg probably won't happen.

Not to mention its going to take more than 3 guys for a title run.  The role players will have to do their part.  That is what makes winning teams.

I do like the supreme confidence in UST!

While I agree Ike will be getting double teamed, I also think that he is going to have a phenomenal year.  It is his senior campaign, and most likely his last basketball season ever, so I think he is going to play at a different level this year.  He is quick and has the ability to beat a double team and throw down over anybody.  Not to mention double teams don't matter when he is getting easy put backs off rebounds (not that Schnettler will leave many rebound opportunities).  As far as role players go, I think UST has some solid bench players.  While loosing Sweeney and DP is a loss to the backcourt, I think Dwyer and Lonnie will add some solid play.  Lonnie is a defensive machine, and won't need to shoot the ball to be effective.  Dwyer also adds height and quickness to the point guard position.  I think UST will only get into trouble when Schnettler isn't hitting and/or Ike gets into early foul trouble.  The role players need to step it up, but even if they just play consistent, the dominance by Ike, Schnettler, and Keating will be enough to separate themselves from the rest of the MIAC.  I am going out on a limb here, but I do think that Ike will average in the high 20's for ppg.  It may not be 30, but I think he is going to be close.  Tommie Pride.

Veteran posters,

Who was the last MIAC player to average over 25 per?  Nobody comes to my mind.

What was the highest scoring average in the last 10 years?

1999 Devean George 29.8 ppg

Although I did not see him play in the MIAC I would hesitate to put Ike and Devean in the same breath.

Ike is an outstanding player, but I agree with LBow, he is going to get mugged this year! ;)

Good job Sum.  We're just holding down the stats trivia until Mose graces us with his presence.  In the meantime I though I'd add this little bit...

Past MIAC Statistical Leaders
Year   Scoring                       Rebounding
1990   20.3  Mike Moes, STO           10.1  Dale Turnquist, BC
1991   23.6  Dale Turnquist, BC       12.5  Dale Turnquist, BC
1992   19.7  Larry Bassett, SJU       12.8  Greg Peterson, BC
1993   22.2  Gerrick Monroe, CAR      11.2  Greg Peterson, BC
1994   20.2  Jason Meckelburg, BC     9.8   Jason Meckelburg, BC
1995   25.2  Donald Jordan, SMU       10.2  Rob Sader, MAC
1996   21.1  Daimen Crump, CON        9.7   Pete Eisenbarth, UST
1997   23.2  Devean George, AUG       8.8   Josh Wilhelm, CAR
1998   27.2  Eric Joldersma, BC       10.5  Devean George, AUG
1999   29.8  Devean George, AUG       11.1  Devean George, AUG
2000   19.6  Patrick Russell, MAC     8.6   Mike Wrobel, UST
2001   20.5  Mike Ludwig, STO         8.7   Matt Davis, AUG
2002   19.8  Andy Gilbert, BC         9.1   Chad Henke, GAC
2003   22.6  Kevin Buth, SJU          8.1   Ben Van Thorre, MAC
2004   19.1  Ben Van Thorre, MAC      9.2   Ben Van Thorre, MAC
2005   20.9  Lucas Olson-Patterson, AUG    11.2  Issac Rosefelt, UST
2006   20.6  Issac Rosefelt, UST      10.5  Issac Rosefelt, UST

And some guy named Al Frost torched the nets to the tune of 685 points in one season for Hamline back in 1967-68.  I'm guessing that works out to be around 34 ppg - dang!

Speaking of Pipes, today must have been time for the semi-annual purge.  Dan O'Brien AD at Hamline received & or asked for the resignation of Paul Miller the football coach, & Tony England the women's soccer coach.  Apparently O'Brien doesn't take too kindly to losing.

There seems to be a revolving door for coaches the last couple of years since the new athletic administration took over.  Granted neither one of the coaches had close to a winning season this year, but don't coaches typically get 4-5 years to make their mark?   Miller had only been at hamline two years.   I wonder what the Oracle, the Hamline student newspaper think of all these comings & goings?

Ah, the Oracle. The last great reporting on that staff happened on this day. http://www.hamline.edu/oracle/archives/051303/?sports/sports3.html

You might also enjoy this incredible run the Pipers of 02-03 put together. I know a few posters (cough Bethel34 cough) might not want to relive a few moments. It was a prayer, and it was answered. Clearly I had no clue what I was doing, or had an editor who knew commas, hyphens and other AP stuff that I would be yelled at now.
