But the biggest surprise to me was the rebounding difference.  Augsburg is a bigger team this year, but they are still not a tall team.  The smaller Dawgs nearly doubled the Carleton rebounding total, & grabbed 37 boards to 19 from the Knights.  In fact, Auggies' 6-1 FY PG Jon Cassens grabbed 6 boards which was 1 more rebound than the combined total of 6-5 Zach Johnson & 6-6 Tommy Drake. Hunh??

I agree that this is the most suprising.  Carelton is probably calling for the resurrection of Forkrud.  And I have to ask again where's Phillips?  The box score has him with 6 Assists, but 1 for 9 total on the night, 1-6 from the field and 0-3 from behind the arc.  Are teams just shutting him down that effectively, or is he not playing well? If this game is any indication of what happens when Phillips is taken out of the scoring picture, he and his team could be in for a LONG season.

Summander,

Yes there was a rule change...about 2 to 3 years ago technicals that were given during the game were shot and then the game resumed from what ever point the technical was called...so when Schlagel picked up the T, it interrupted the game, and then his team which was bringing up the ball was given the ball back...

I thought as you did that the J's would get the ball...but then talked to an official after the game about that incident.

I think the problem with Carleton is that they are looking for leaders and Phillips is a distributor not a scorer...plus without the threat of two inside scorers at Carleton, teams don't have to sag as much...

VOJ,
Thanks for the update. This must be a college rule. I have seen H.S. games where it is still administered they way it use to be!

Augsburg is going to be a little better than they have been...The folks at Gustavus said they were much improved...

carleton looked like they were sleep walking the entire game...i think their problem is last year if they were playing like that Fork would have stepped up and been vocal about it to the players and got them going....i have only seen one game this year so i dont know if this has happened in other games this year or not but i didnt see anyone step up and be a vocal leader on the court...they have a lot of players that can lead by actions but someone needs to step up and say lets get our heads out of our arse and play like we know we can

if this is the problem that they are having and no one steps up this could be an up and down season underachieving season for the knights

i think it will all work out though and they will be ok

Should be real interesting tonight in Moorhead. CAR struggled at CORD last year with Forkrud, won by 2. CORD has basically the same cast of characters this year. I see CORD went with a "big" lineup against Mayville. Linz started with the two frosh Baldwin and Johnson. Citterman did not start for the first time this year and only played 9 minutes. Meichsner was a stellar 0-5 shooting as his replacement.

Question for those that played in the league how big a factor was the "long" bus ride up to CORD?

I would argue that is a very big factor for the following reasons:

1. Lack of physical movement makes it hard to warm-up/stay loose.
2. Mentally you worry about how much the ride will affect your game.
3. Many time guys would sleep on the way up. For me I like to be awake for at least a couple hours before I play.
4. The long trip deters from fans that attend most away games from coming.

What's worse than all of those though is riding all the way up there, playing a crappy game, losing, and then having to ride all the way back.  It's one trip I'm gald I won't be making anytime soon.

Yeah, it is good to see Local back on the board.   Even though I didn't always agree with him or others, the various ideas & opinions expressed made for fun, if not interesting & informative exchanges with the OAS, Local, Sofa Kings & Shockers of the board.  ;)

More on the CARL/AUG game – I heard that in the last 5 minutes or so of the game, Phillips was being subbed in & out as Carleton was doing the offense/defense substitution with him & Jay Melson, & or FY Jeremy Sutherland.

Interesting what the Cobbs are trying to do with their lineup. They basically went with a 2 PG lineup in Anthony Boike & Eric Meischner the other night, & they still had 24 TOs in a relatively low scoring game with Mayville.  Looking at the team stats it seems it's a team thing & not just one or few players that are turning the ball over.  For example, the primary starting PG - Boike is averaging 4.5 TO/g & Linz a forward is averaging 4.3 TO /g.

One area the Cobbs do excel in is rebounding, so that should be an interesting stat to watch in tonight's game against Carleton.  I can't access the MIAC site right now to compare with conference leaders, but I did see that the Cobbs average just over 40 Rebs a game in conference play, & hold a 5.5 rebounding margin over their opponents.  On the other hand, Carleton has only averaged 29 Rs/game while giving up 35 per game.

that is correct...it was with sutherland who is a very lanky player

sutherland might not make a big splash as a freshman like zach johnson, conboy, drake or derock did but i think he has the potential to be a very good player

Finally, at least for me the MIAC website is back up.  It's hard to get a read after only 3 league games, but maybe the rebounding issue with Carleton Saturday was an anomaly afterall, & like CMob said, the Knights were just sleepwalking.  Against SJU & Bethel they played them both to a standstill in the boards department.

CMob - I've seen Sutherland play a number of times in high school & I think you're right.  He should do well in the MIAC.

I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Fun to see all the talk about the Auggies on here... This is a completely different team from the past 5 or so years- Great to see the young guys stepping up and seeing at least 5 guys in double figures every game. Coach Griess is not messing around- He did a great job of putting this squad together and I think they are going to continue to pull off some big upsets!
