Didn't stick around to watch your girls team get throttled.

Thanks for the update.

Tommies beat Carleton 64-62, but it's a little deceiving. Trailing 62-57 late, Phillips hits a trey, then the Knights get a stop with 30 seconds to go. They call a timeout with 15 left, and out of the timeout, they try to get the ball to Drake for a 1-on-1, but Ike knocks it to Dwyer, who gives it back to Ike downcourt for the finishing dunk. Phillips hits a meaningless jumper for the final margin as time expires. Ike played nicely in his first game back from mono. 10 points and only 2 rebounds, but he played in small spurts because of the illness. Schnettler hit some big shots in the second half as UST had a double digit lead and was ahead almost the entire night. Carleton didn't have much of an answer inside for Ike or Alex McCoy, and man is that guy huge! He's only 6-4, but with his physicality inside plays more like 6-9. Once Ike gets his conditioning back, watch out.

Whatever this whole doubt about UST's point guard situation was, Dwyer ended tonight. He also hit some big shots in the second half, scored eight points, had three assists. Most importantly, NO turnovers. He's not the scoring point guard that Sweeney or Buri were, but he can handle the ball and run the offense, which is what a true point guard is. Viau is also a nice versatile player, made all four of his shots and finished with eight points.

The Knights have stayed close with two very good teams (MSU-Mankato and UST) and been unable to finish both off. They actually had a 12-point lead against the Mavericks in the second half and lost by three. They are playing better, but they're not quite there yet.

speaking of the gusties i put my ear to the street and heard that group of students from gus took on the JV team in a game and put an absolute whoopin on em  :o...how can a team with a set offense who practices everyday get stomped by a group of players that just plays pick up ball...maybe the gusties are cutting the wrong players or looking in the wrong places to fill their roster??

I suppose it would then be shocking to hear that, a few years back, some SJU non-hoopers combined to pound the SJU varsity eh?

Gimme a break with this argument. It's D3. People make decisions to not play for a lot of reasons, only some of which are of the cut variety. For example, arguably the best post on campus my senior year didn't go out for the team due to his career path. That doesn't mean they aren't/weren't good and never play anymore.

I missed Pick'em tonight. Thanks for the reminder, board  ???
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Good for UST, it's always a grind playing Carelton, especially there for the tommies.  We have escaped and not escaped some ugly battles there.  I think it is the locker room.

Speaking of...for former players, or anyone with experience in visitor locker rooms.  Which are the worst?

I would say

1. Hamline, small and a little stinky
2. Carelton, super small
3. Augsburg, the locker room is ok, but they only give you a small storage closet, and you have to sit in a classroom at halftime.

Anyone got some feedbak from the Johnnie's game??

Warning Long Post Ahead
A solid game for the Johnnies last night. I would characterize it as a confidence "re-building" game. After the Florida debacle it was nice to see the team play a disciplined (for the most part) game. I thought the rotation of post players (C. Schafer, Fogt, Kincaide) for the Johnnies did a nice job of defending Moberg. They held him to 15 points on 6-11 shooting. By the way Moberg missed 3, 3pt attempts, what is this guy doing that far from the basket?

The J's opened the game by pounding the ball down to C. Schafer. He had 11 of the first 13 points. I think the energy Moberg expended trying to defend hurt him as well on the offensive end of the floor. The success of the inside game opened up the outside game for the Johnnies. They did not shoot exceptionally well but hit enough shots when they needed to to win.

Johnnies led by 14 with 13 minutes to go in the game, but you knew that BET was going to make a run. While I would have liked to have seen the J's put them away at that point, I was encouraged by the fact the BET run came as a result of missed shots by the Johnnies. These misses came within the context of the offense not as a result of freelancing and poor shot selection!

Royals rallied to tie and even take a lead with about 2:00 minutes to go. Johnnies showed some mettle, made some free throws and key rebounds and survived with a 4 point win.

Not a thing of beauty but a W.

Madson for BET is a very nice ballplayer. Johnnies had a tough time defending him. I thought Strom played a real solid game as well. He had one huge block. Was this a big night for him or does he really have Alex Weaver like springs? I thought Rolando gave the Royals some nice minutes in the paint when Moberg was out. If they ever decided to play those two horses at the same time know one in the league could match up with them! Meadowcroft was a non factor. You didn't even know whether he was on the floor or not.

Lieser had 19 and Westman had 16 for the Johnnies. I was imppressed with Westman's shot selection or lack of shot selection. He was only 3-8 from the floor but I can only recall one time where he really forced a shot outside of the offense. Brady Brink had 23 solid minutes! He is going to need to shoot the ball better though!

The J's have STOLAF at home on Saturday, then they go to MAC, AUG and HAM before they get the Tomcats at home on the 17th. This was a good win heading into what is setting up as a real tough stretch of games!

And to think, Mr. Thousand Points, Thousand Rebounds, 3rd all-time in the state of MN for blocked shots didn't even become a teacher ;)

(Check http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/records.asp?actnum=402 if you don't believe me....you'll find him on the career rebounds list, too. And he did it all with a torn ACL his senior year.)

I was on both ends of those JV showdowns. Willy's right...they're not a big deal.

SJU-BET -- Sounds like a nice confidence win for the Js.  I really thought this game could have gone either way.  Sumander - Steve Strom has huge upps!  Dunks, blocks & rebounds are his thing.  Moberg has a very nice shooting touch for a big guy, but with the Royals' propensity for jacking up treys; I kinda doubt they need their big guy firing them up as well.  Mebbe the J's & Tommies will be having a duel after all.

MAC-CORD-- Speaking of firing up treys, do my eyes deceive me??  MAC throws up 38 treys & makes 21 of them in their 92-70 win over the Cobbs.  68% of their offense comes from treys?  What in name of the ghost of the Jr. Grinnell Pioneers is going on here?  :o ;)  Mebbe some of the posters who have been round this league for awhile can fill me in, but what's the MIAC team record for most made treys in a game?  I looked at the MIAC website record book & couldn't find any info other than two guys back in the early nineties – Larry Bassett SJU 91-92 and Bryan Flam CORD - 89-90 who both made 11 triples in a game.   I betcha I could have found this information on the old Cobber website --Hint, hint.

STO-SMU -- Who can figure out the Oles or the RedBirds?  Reading the Ole recap, even the Ole SID/student intern sounds surprised the Oles won.

AUG-HAM -- Ditto.  Surprising Dawgs keep winning & thus far have only one loss on their homecourt.  I know one poster that may be eating humble pie or crow at the end of the season.  Luckily, he said the Pipes could finish anywhere from 3rd on down.  I think  ;)

UST-CARL -- Tommies keep squeaking by & get by the Carlies last night.  Mebbe now they can start to turn the corner & become a dominating team with Ike working his way back into playing form.  TH4L - I would wait until Dwyer gets 2-3 solid games behind him before I say the Tommies PG struggles are over.  As I recall, he started the season then started splitting time with anyone else Fritz decided to throw out there.   CMOB - where's Jay Melson?  He's missed 2 games in a row.  If they had him in the lineup the Knights woulda-coulda-shoulda  sprung an upset at Mankato & possibly beat the Toms?

Willy, if you ever tire of the newspaper biz, you & Shocker should start up a PR firm.  It would be a natural fit for all the spin.  ;)

DP,

I talked with Carleton's SID last night, and Melson has some sort of mysterious lower back injury. Don't know how bad it is, but that's why he's out.

And since when do we have to babysit for WW or anyone else on the board for that matter? He's been around long enough to know when MIAC games are and to have his pick ems together. If he forgets, that's his problem and nobody elses, except maybe SDG. Just giving ya crap kid :P

Box score musings:

  • Ham and Aug Combine for 40 TO and 21 steals, must have been ugly basketball
  • CORD's leading rebounder is Baldwin with 4. Linz should have that many just stepping on the floor
  • Starters for the Redbirds combined average 29 minutes in last nights game. They only play 8 players. How much did they miss Smith and Washington. Redbirds have 20 TO and lose the ball 8X on steals

0-of-17 from three-point range....You've got to be kidding me.

Game time of men's basketball is 5:30. How can Stoner not get the box score to the Trib by 11?

I also may have said third at some point. I'd be happy with sixth now.

DeRock and Thrasher came into the game with identical 18.4 scoring averages.  They matched each other bucket for bucket, 3 apiece for a combined total of 12 points.  Not bad defense in Auggie land. [/list]

The word down in Winona is that the Cards had the lead basically the whole game and just ran out of gas... I don't know what the deal was with only playing 8, Trewick is known to play at least 10.  However, with Terrance and Washington The inside presence won't be as strong with only Cormier and Batterman.  Batterman has been playing a little better and Cormier has been a force so far this year.  Hopefully they can figure everything out before the Gusties come to town.  Mary's hasn't had a game under 20 with gustavus in about 3 years, maybe it'll turn around!
