according to D3hoops- SJU 64-UST 59. Final.
Was not able to hear the game-so Fins-tell me what happened. What a big win for Smith and SJU-it has been some time coming. But the rest of the season remains-how will SJU play Saturday?

Well, the Tommie posters seem to have been right in their preseason picks — there may be a team who goes undefeated in MIAC play this year :)

I'll be interested to see a box score and hear some summaries. I'm sitting at work waiting on Fing pro schools for tomorrow's paper. Help a brotha out! I'd wager Schnettler was effectively taken away and Ike threw up plenty of bad shots against guys as big or bigger than him in the defensive struggle. I'm also surprised MVP Keating allowed his team to lose, especially to his arch rival.

Get some Go Juice (Hamms) in you fins and give us a report pronto! I doubt the old fart MM will make it to the computer as he drinks himself silly to dull the pain.

FEAR THE HUSKERS!
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

J's win.....Brink played huge stuffing Ike and shutting down Keating.  Ike came up with 20 but missed 5 of his first 6 shots. Johnnies started out 10-0 but the Tommies responded with a 10-0 run of their own.  Schnettler had zero (0) points in the first half due to a pestering Ryan Leiser.  Back and forth the whole second half Tommies claimed their first lead I believe with under 4 minutes to play and Tyler Westman hit a huge 3 to put the J's up 2 with just over a minute to play. Brink then blocked Keating and stole the ball. He was fouled and missed the front ended of a one and one. Tommies had the ball but missed a couple shots, Brink got the board and ripped both throws......J's win by 5. Great Game all around by everyone. It will be a tough game at Schonecker later this year.

cobbernation

Cobbers ran into a hot shooting St. Mary's team tonight.  When the cobbs were in man defense, they could shut down the outside game, but give up easy buckets inside.  Then whey they tried a zone, st. marys would just make 3's over and over.  THey had 13 3 balls and shot 50% from the field.

Overall, I think the cobbs need to become a little more physical or scrappy on defense.  But the cobbs did take care of the ball somewhat well.

20 Cody Dyshaw.........    5-9    4-7    0-0    0  2  2   1  14  1  1  0  0  20

Dyshaw starts out the game on the bench.  Comes into the game at the 15:00 mark, shoots 4-4 (3-3 on 3 point)  Then at 11:00 is taken out of the game and gets back in at the 2:30 mark.  Let the kid play, he was scoring well and playing very good.  Played more in 2nd half, but shot 1-4.  The kid is good and has a pretty nice shot.

What a frickin night! D3 hoops at it's finest, certainly from the bandwagon perspective. My Hamm's addled brain is still swirling, and it's hard to remember the game now that I survey the damage done to the wagon by the zealous, rambunctuous crowd. The Hamm's is gone, the lipstick plastered crowd has departed, and it looks like we could have a Victorias Secret remnant sale with all of the leftover undergarments. Oh well, I hope the gals can get it cleaned up tomorrow. Looks like we may need to upgrade to a larger wagon, now that SJU IS IN SOLE POSSESSION OF 1ST PLACE IN MIAC HOOPS!!
Oh yeah, the game. Well as far as the purple team, that number 42 dood is way way smoooov, he seems to own the paint on his end, and good on the boards tonight. The rest of the purple? Not so much. A decent team, but SJU is, as of tonight, decenter. But it was a good matchup. Good summary by MIACWatchmen as far as the to-and-fro of the game. Ohme managed to crawl out of the tangled metal of his car wreck with the Link bus today on his hands and knees, making it to the gym just moments before tipoff. No  worse for wear he was solid, but for reasons I can't quite articulate now, Brink is my player-of-the-game. But SJU is solid up and down their lineup. Two Schafers, Westman and Lieser left no doubt, though the game got close, that SJU was and would be in control tonight. Key defensive plays by SJU in the final minutes. If Brink could've purchased a couple of his free throws, the game would not have been as close.
Nice to see fellow posters at the game and after, Watchmen, Sumander, Maniac, Buckman, Raiderguy, and VOJ. Maniac claims he's reffing at the rematch in St. Paul next month. We won't have a bleepin chance.
But the Bandwagon looks like Bourbon Street early Ash Wednesday morning. I think it's time to retire to the hot tub now for the sweet victory cigar and Hamm's nightcap.

A couple of important things from the UST recap and boxscore:

Tommies were out-scored 20-1 in bench points. Depth anyone? Also, this is the first time in a while that UST has shot under 50% from the floor. If you can force the Tommies into tough, contested shots, you have a chance to beat them when you combine that with solid offense, as it sounds like the Johnnies had that last night.

Schnetter only went 3-4 fg (203 3 pt) in 38 minutes? What the heck is that all about. With his quick release, he should've gone three times as many shots off. Was the defense just that good on him, or was he hesistant to hoist? Both?

Nothing really stands out in the SJU numbers as amazing, but they did have 19 assists on 26 field goals and only nine turnovers. This win looks like it was nothing fancy for the Johnnies, just a team that came out and played a little better than its opponent in a big game on its home court. Tommies will win the rematch at Schoenecker.

Drake Palmer

Sheesh, talk about bad days to attend a workshop!  Well, at least it gave me an excuse at the end of the day to head up 94 to C-Ville.  Well, the highly anticipated clash last night between the league titans, the Johnnies & Tommies, was all that & then some.  However, if you were a Johnnies' player or fan, the "some part", rightfully belonged to the Johnnies last night.  Sexton arena was rocking & the place was near capacity with Js fans, plus a good number of Tommies' fans who made the drive up from the cities.

As I've said before, I believe the Tommies' Big 3 of Rosefelt, Keating, & Schnettler are superior to any combination of the top players from the Js, & "statistically", the box score numbers would support my case.  Rosefelt, Keating, & Schnettler scored 45 points compared to Lieser, Westman & (for argument's sake I'll pick) Craig Schafer's 31 points.  I'm still a fan of the Ts' Big 3, but stats don't always tell a complete story, & last night the Johnnies were the Titans & outplayed the Tommies in every aspect of a well fought game.  Even the Twin Towers were able to get in more than a couple licks, & tossed in a trey & several baby hooks against the league's premier post player.

Sum, you were right about Leisure (sp  :P) & the Js opting to have him guard Schnettler.  It may have affected his performance on the offensive side of the ball (3-12) but he did an exceptional job of guarding Schnettler all night long.  Schnettler only got 4 shots all night which was due in part to a bad game plan & or execution by the Ts, but in large part due to excellent defense by Lieser.

In addition, Johnnies players #s 4-10 i.e. Jon Kaus, Nick Johnson provided effective relief for Lieser & even gulp, Jason "Sunshine" Fogt was effective off the bench for one of the Schafers as they outplayed, & out hustled their counterparts.

Like a few others have said, the main bench & game difference maker was Brady "They call me Mr. De" – Brink.  He is definitely a special player.  Every time I've seen him play this season he's had an outstanding game, & last night was no exception.  Time after time he made big defensive stops, & on several occasions lured Keating into forcing up a couple of bad turnaround jump shots.  Then in the closing minutes of the game when it appeared the Tommies were finally going wrestle the lead away from Js, Brink slithered his way through the lane to make a very tough contested layup to break the ice for the Johnnies. A minute later, Ryan Lieser steps up & knocks down an acrobatic, double clutch soft jumper in the paint, followed by Westman's painful dagger of a trey that effectively sealed the deal.  Ouch!

Nice, nice win for the Johnnies & probably lessens the blow of the spanking they received last January from the Tommies.  The re-match between these two teams a month from now is shaping up to be a monster.  Can't wait.

Heard the heartbreaker on the internet last night.  I seem to remember a game last year at C-ville where there was a late three by Mr. Westman that sent the game into OT.  Kids got some ice. It sure makes great basketball.

At least I have consolation that two UST posters are leading the YNot boards.

Keep up the good work TH4L, the purple needs us.

Fins and Watch have done a nice job summarizing the game and atomosphere at Collegeville last night! The game story from the Daily Planet also gives a good account.

Key quote from the article for those Brady Brink naysayers:  St. Thomas began chipping away at that margin before jumping on top 59-58 itself on a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Andy Dwyer with 1:45 to play.

But Westman answered back with his 3-pointer. And from there, the Brady Brink show began. He recorded rebounds on three Tommies' misses, blocked one of those shots and drew fouls each time.

The depth of the Johnnies was a key factor. The Johnnies bench contributed 62 minutes, 20 pts, 13 reb, 9 asst, 3 blocks & 1 steal. The Tommies bench 25 min, 1 pt, 2 reb, 1 asst & 1 steal. Ike, Schnettler and Keating all played the entire second half. They logged 37,38,37 minutes respectively. All 5 UST starters played at least 30 minutes. Westman played 35 minutes. The most of any Johnnie starter.

Lieser did a nice job on Schnettler. Schnettler had exactly one shot in the first half and 0 points. The match up of Brink and Keating was fun to watch. Keating is a warrior, but I would have to give this round to Brink! One of the unsung heros for the J's was C. Schafer. Ike got his double - double but nothing came easy. On the offensive end Craig did a nice job of going right at Ike. he ended up with 12 hard earned points and did a great job of boxing out. There was actually a sighting of Tyler Westman playing defense again last night! Nice to see that and that he still has ice water in his veins. The 3 he hit from the top of the key, with a hand in his face, with just over a minute to go was a back breaker for the Tom's.

So.....all in all a nice way to end the first half of the season for the Johnnies. there reward for going 10-0 is a trip to CORD on Saturday where the Cobbs will be hurting after getting spanked by SMU last night! The J's have to put this one behind them and get ready for the next one!

now, i realize that the game is still a week away but, both SJU and the TOMMIES each only have 1 game remaining until that game.  The game is AT SJU and i would like to hear what everyones opinions and kind of a game predictions may be??

Since my knowledge of all things sports-related is legendary over on the MIAC football pages, it just did not seem right to not share my prescient knowledge of the pumpkin-pushing pastime over here.

So, SJU4life I sees it this way:
Ike gets tossed on T's 3 minutes into the game after his scrum with some SJU fans who were just sitting there minding their own business. Keating fouls out early in the 3rd with 6 points after Brink makes him his bee-yotch.* Schnettler leads the purple with 14 points, 12 from the line because his uncle's cousin is reffing. SJU wins going away 82-55.
Any other questions?

Since I'm driving the bandwagon, we will be stopping at the La for pre- and post-game Hamm's next Wednesday. All are welcome, even Tommies (if you buy). ;)

*Edited, email me if you don't know what this means.

OK, so us bandwagon guys don't know everything, but once in a while we get things right.  :D

Daaaang Tommies!

Every team hits a bump in the road, better now than in March.

Couple thoughts.

Other than the Big 3, not very much production from anyone else.  It seems a lot of these guys are afraid to be aggressive and it shows.  I wasn't at the game but I heard from some people that guys were passing up short shots in the lane or wide open jump shots from the elbow area.  Take your shot when you have it, make yourself someone who has to be respected.

Bryan with only 4 shots! Somebody hit a guy and get him open. Set a pick and actually make contact with the defender to give Bryan the required 6 inches he needs to be considered open.  He's the best shooter in the league!

The past few games I saw and from what I heard from the other games, UST hasn't been playing all that well lately.  They don't seem to be flowing like they were earlier in the year.   They're probably putting too much pressure on themselves.  I wouldn't worry about it.  They have 10 conference games to figure it out and when they do, I'd watch out.

Good first half of they year by SJU.  They're in the driver seat now, every game is a big game.  Looks like a 2 team battle for the conference.

Expect an absolute thrashing on Saturday at St. Mary's.  I wouldn't want to be UST's opponent.

LBow, When I looked at the Schedule , those were my exact thoughts!

Fins you were partially correct, Keating did foul out of the game and Brady WAS THE MAN!
