Question for anyone at the SMU-SJU game last night. It sounded like the J's had success early in the game pounding the ball inside. Did SMU change defenses or assignments? It sounded like the J's started settling for jump shots again and nothing fell. Lieser and Westman 1-10 from deep and 5-22 overall. You are not going to win many games shooting like that.

Fins, I think a wheel fell off the bandwagon last night! Who the heck did we have in charge last night? :o

We'll have to get it into the shop today for repairs and take it out for a test run on Wednesday night. They Knights are coming to C-Ville!

I was at the game between the J's and SMU..and yes the J's were pounding it inside a great deal, but then SMU adjusted and got hot...and I don't think the "bigs" were doing all that well to get open

Give Coach Trewick credit...they slowed the tempo and really were patient on the offensive end...and the J's post defense was not very good...I also think going to opposite ends of the state in a period of 48 hours was not a great development...

It will be interesting what a return home does for SJU...they played  5 of their last 6 on the road and went 5-1, in this conference that is not bad...now they play 5 of the last 8 at home...

The final men's and women's basketball games at Macalester Gymnasium will be Saturday, before the building is torn down to make room for the new Macalester Athletics and Recreation Center.
The men's game vs. St. Thomas is at 1 p.m., followed by the women's game at 3:30 p.m. Both teams finish MIAC play with seven consecutive road games.

Macalester Gymnasium was built in 1924 and was the home of Scots basketball teams until 1956. The Scots returned to the renovated gymnasium in 1994.

There is no charge, but fans need a ticket, which will be available at the main gate at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Once the tickets are gone, they are closing the doors.

Thanks VOJ, The bad news is that two of the three on the road are BET &  UST.

Doesn't matter. Trewick was in charge last night.

From st Cloud Times Story.....

But St. John's coach Jim Smith didn't think his team was overly tired.

"The only thing I know for sure is that when you shoot 38.9 percent, you won't beat the Little Sisters of the Poor," he said.

Weel, looks like we won't be milking too much more out of the SJU- SMU game last night.  So only in the interest of keeping our flagging interests active... ;D

So, PI - what's up? You make two posts this morning & neither one of them deals with the Pipers??  Nice job deflecting attention away from the inconsistent Pipes.   ;)  How the heck do they get so wildly outrebounded -- HAM - 37 boards, BET 53 boards, in their loss to the Royals last night?  My theory, when you take your best, some would say only post player in Kyle Foster & put him out on the wing to shoot 3s, you lose a ton of rebounding.  Granted he's making the  treys at a pretty good clip but what the's tradeoff - a 83-68 loss I guess.

One more item on the Johnnies & other Catholics:

S-M-U ! ! ! ! ! !66-63

holy cows and all that jazz.... WOW

Holy Mary Mother of God.  We lost to the Christian Brothers.

Would someone explain to me the various  religious "orders" of the Catholic church?  Tmerton, I realize you were joking, but what's the religious stigma in losing to a Xian brother school? I vaguely recall something about St. Paul private high school Cretin-Derham Hall being affiliated with the Christian Brothers, & is DeLASalle, a Mpls HS associated with the DeLaSalle order? Also, is St. John's U associated with the Dominican or is it the Franciscans?  I have no idea about the Tommies - Xian Bros.?  Help a non Catholic brotha out.    :D Is this "order" stuff sorta like the ELCA Lutherans vs. the Wisconsin synod type Lutherans, Southern Bapists vs. American Baptists etc.?

In any event it sure seems to me that kids coming out of the various private Catholic high schools attend Catholic Colleges with seemingly little regard for the particular Catholic orders.  True, false?

DP- I think you have a case that the catholic order allegience is pretty loose.

I think St Johns is bennidictan along with the more obviously named st bens.  I can't say for sure any others.

Drake, I can't explain all the ins and outs of the Catholic Church. I am a Johnnie  ;D come lately to it. I was raised LCMS. Caused quite a stir within the family 20+ years ago when I decided to marry a Catholic girl!

Did you catch this in Shooter's column on Sunday?

) It would not be surprising if safety Nolan Brewster, son of the new Gophers coach and a junior safety at Mullen High, which is a Christian Brothers school in Denver, transfers to Cretin-Derham Hall, also a Christian Brothers school. Eden Prairie could be another consideration for Nolan.

I think Barry just added a new wrinkle to the Run and Gun offense; it's called the "Postman 3".  Foster (with good success, I might add) has hoisted 29 treys in the last four games (making 16) after taking only 6 in the first thirteen games.

Note - the Pipers have been hammered on the offensive boards in each of the last three games, having surrendered 16, 19 and 19 offensive rebounds.   That's not surprising, given their style of play, which has (i) the Pipers trapping and double teaming out on the perimeter, and (ii) the perimeter players taking off as soon as the shot goes up so they can try to get easy transition baskets.  Their style may be entertaining to watch, but it won't lead to too many wins.

I like your idea Nites, but in looking at last night's BET HAM game stats only, the Royals drilled the Pipes on the defensive end.  They collected 34 defensive boards to only 21 defensive boards by the Pipes.  Obviously, the Pipes' poor shooting % - 37% also created more opportunities for Bethel.  Speaking of, where are all the Bethel boosters?  They've made a remarkable comeback on the season thus far, going from 1-5 in conference to 6-5.  Could they be this year's Carleton??

Looks like the bandwagon crashed into a flock of redbirds!  A little too much Batterman and not enough Westman.

As long as UST and SJU do what they are supposed to do the rest of the year, should be an awesome game at the end of the year!
