Royals up 4 with 12:00 to go in the second half. Royals shooting the ball much better the second half.

Bethel 83, Saint John's 71 - Final

Free Throws: Bethel=over 30 attempts
                     Saint John's=5 attempts

How is that possible?

SJU not so good tonight. Fins, put the bandwagon in mothballs-we can only hope the season turns out like football in the playoffs.

No way! The bandwagon keeps rolling!
No doubt, all 4 seats in the Bethel Mini Cooper are now full.  ;D
Johnniepress- Who was reffing tonight? VOJ was probably right even though PC jumped down his throat for having the nerve to post such a thing on this board.

TommieHoops4Life

Typical Johnnies excuse. They couldn't possibly have gotten out-played by a better ball club. The reffing had to have been horrible, and there had to have been a costly call or two down the stretch that went against SJU. :o

It seems you are right on all counts. Pretty good for a Tommy.  ;)

ROR-Where's the bandwagon? It's getting late. Hope a school bus didn't tip over on top of you.

UST CAR was a pretty ugly game but i think both teams played pretty good defensively...CAR got the low scoring game they were hoping for but couldnt capitalize and missed quite a few layups in the second half...i like the UST pg...he was solid the four times i saw him play last year and has been solid when i have seen him play this year

Officials:???

Hmm, stat crew operator forgot to fill it in.

Great game for Scotty. 0-4, 0 pts, 2 rebs, 2 PF, 13 min. Oh to be 6-7 and average only six points.

Nice games for Moberg and Tim "Mad Dawg" Madson (as Common would say, we got a good vibe). Gotta like what Laugen and the "difference maker" Charlie did.

Watch out for the Pipes. We're only 2 games back. We awoke DeRock with all the negativity on the board.

i agree Cmob, it was ugly. neither team shot very well, as the stats show (26% for Car and 36% for UST), definitely a testament to the D that was being played as almost every shot on both ends was contested, earned and deep into the shot clock. special mention to Kootsikas for pestering the hell out of Schnettler in the 2nd half. not only did he hold him scoreless after a 12 pt first half, but he only allowed him 3 shots. the Knights struggles around the rim cost them dearly in the final 4 minutes. Drake missed 3 putback/layups during that stretch (he shot a pretty terrible 2-11-almost all the shots were within 12 feet), and Johnson took a great feed from Phillips and rolled one off the tin that would have brought them within a couple buckets. Dwyer was solid (6 assists-0 TOs), and i was most impressed with how much he harrassed Phillips. 3 qtr pressure on him almost all game, which i think took its toll on Phillips at the end of the game when Car needed some outside shooting to close the gap. Keating delivered the big blow when UST was in an offensive lull, grabbing a monster O board in Worm-esque fashion, and scoring the putback and foul. Next time down the court, buries a 3 to push the lead to double digits. Foul trouble kept him quiet, but he stepped up when the Tommies needed a play.

if possible, I would like a recap on the SJU game WHO WAS AT THE GAME.  I could not make it but by looking at the box score and talking to a few people it sure sounds like the officials were terrible.  Im typically not an advocate of blaming refs especially in a 12 point game but with SJU shooting 47% for the game and only having 9 turnovers thats typically going to win ball games in the MIAC.  Can anyone tell me why the fouls were 19-9 with the free throw margin being 33 for bethel to 5 for SJU?  I would really prefer an UNBIAS answer too!

AO

I was at the BU-SJU game, and I do not think there was any sort of favorable officiating towards Bethel.  Simply put, the Bethel big men were better than the St. John's bigs, especially in the second half.  The Schafers, Fogt and late in the game Kincaide, could not stop Moberg.  Meadowcraft and Rolando also were all over the boards.  Moberg was blocking shots cleanly and the johnnie shots weren't dropping in the second half like they did in the first.  Moberg was able to make his free throws when the fouls were called and finish inside when they weren't.  I didn't hear a whole lot of arguments from the johnnie fans, because there just weren't very many controversial calls.

johnniepress

I have no idea how the officiating was, I wasn't there. I was simply pointing out the unusual stats.

The Johnnies shot a horrid 3-of-18 from 3-point land (16.7%) yet they were still able to outshoot Bethel 47.8%-42.9% overall.

Bethel held a slim edge in rebounds, 40-36, but SJU outscored BU in second-chance points, 14-9.

And then of course the fouls, 19 (SJU)-7 (BU), with the free throw edge 32-5 in favor of the Royals. It's not very often you see that.

Wasn't at the BET SJU game, although I did listen to it (Royals announcers are almost as bad as SMU's). It sounded like the Royals were the more aggressive team in the second half and they shot the ball much better in the second half. Stats bear this out second half shooting percentages were: SJU 43% overall, 22 % from 3, Royals were 59% & 57%. While the game rebounding was close, the Royals won the second half on the boards 21 - 13. I remember on a key possession with about 4 minutes to go Meadowcroft got 3 O-Reb on the same possession! Royals get 7 steals and the J's only one.

IMO. it sounded like the Johnnies were playing not to lose and the Royals were playing to win! J's had a chance to make a statement and didn't.

That being said, J's aren't going to lose three more games the rest of the way @STOLAF,MAC,AUG,HAM and @UST. They finish second or better and the BET will come to C-Ville for the rubber match in the second round of the playoffs!
