I know Brian Mauer was one of the officials and boy was he getting friendly with the Bethel bench before the game...

I was at home sick last night and clearly wasn't at the game, but I might cringe more seeing Mauer at the start of a game than the Asian Sensation. He did a high school football game I covered two falls ago and called either four or five straight personal fouls on my team and then refused to explain anything to my team's coach. However, he was fine with explaining things to the chain crew as I stood five feet away.

He's a complete control freak who holds grudges and thinks he's THE show. I've no idea if anything like this transpired last night...but it wouldn't surprise me either.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

As a former coach I can tell you that Brian is a much better official than the Asian Sensation.  Mr. Bakko is the worst official that referees in the state of Minnesota.

Thanks Bethel34 and Drake for the summaries from last night!

On another note, Hamline pulled one out against the Auggies last night.  The interesting story here I'm told is that Kyle Foster did not play, was not on the bench, and may have actually been removed from the team for the remainder of the year because of discipline issues.  No confirmation on that last one just yet, but I will let the faithful board know if I hear anything.

Nice wrap up of the BET SJU game guys (Drake,Bet34,Bethuy). Is the team that showed up the second half for the Royals good enough to take down the Tommies on Saturday?

I gotta run to another meeting (one more day of this stuff!) otherwise I would elaborate, but YUP - the Bethelites could definitely take down the Tommies. They've already gone toe to toe with them in 2 OTS! I'm not saying they will, especially at the Tommies' house, & all the fairweather fans in likely attendance, but they have definitely got enough ammo.  On a side note, I would think Coach Perrel needs to be acknowledged & his work he's done with the Bethel D.

localcoach- my guess is that Foster got removed from the team or just quit because of his idiotic actions against Bethel last week...all I have to say is "what an idiot!"...as for Hamline, as I said a few days ago, DeRock is a sleeping giant and as he goes so does Hamline...well, Hamline was in a "must win" game last night as they will be the next 4 games, but DeRock stepped up to the challenge and had, maybe, his best offensive game in his young collegiate career...34 pts, 12-16 from the floor including 6-7 from deep...I think this puts DeRock back on the map for talk about All-MIAC...and if he continues to play this well and Thrasher and some of the role players continue to play the way they have been, the Pipers could slip into the 6th and final playoff spot by the end of the season...boy would that be something!

Panning is without a doubt the worst ref in the MIAC, and I saw him on TV at the high school showcase at Target Center in December. He made two absolutely brutal calls, and all I could do was laugh.

Just like I said in my last post, you Johnnie fans are looking for excuses as to why your team loses, as opposed to maybe admitting that the other team was just better on that particular night. Any word on if the Bethel fans started chanting "JUST LIKE FOOTBALL!" at the end? Refs can make questionable calls, and there can even be a big foul desparity, but they're not the reason one team loses. From the recaps on here, it sounds like BU out-played SJU in general, but especially in the post.

I'm sure they've had some good games this season, and I've only seen the once or twice, but the Schafer twins are far from impressive. They play soft and are pretty mediocre at finishing in the post, and it sounds like they confirmed what I've believed about them all along last night. Fogt would have potential if he could walk and chew gum at the same time, but that's yet to be seen. If SJU is going to make any kind of postseason run, they'll do it with Ohme, Lieser and Westman.

For all the Koz haters out there, the Oles have suddenly won three straight after being demolished by the Tommies, and could sneak up as high as fourth in the MIAC by regular season's end. I'm even tempted to pick them to upset SJU Saturday!

Retired Old Rat

"JUST LIKE FOOTBALL" would be just fine with me.

One of the final 8 would be exceeding my expectations.  ;D

Kyle Foster is not with the Pipers anymore.

HU has already removed his name from the team roster on the website.

Bow   - tell me more about that monster offensive board & putback by Mike Keating in last night's Carlie-Tommie game.  Was it as sweet as the fastbreak layup & finish he had in last Saturday's game against MAC?  For those of you who weren't there -- Keating gets the ball on an outlet pass on the left hand side of the court, dribbles down the court, gets to the FT line, fakes middle, crosses back, & finishes with a rt–handed layup on the left side of the hoop.  Legend has it that he helped the Mac defender back to his feet after breaking his ankles on the crossover.. One of my two favorite shots of the year so far.  ;D

My other favorite shot is the one that Ryan Lieser made against the Tommies a week or so ago in a close, pressure packed game.  In the closing minutes of the game, diminutive Lieser drives from the right FT line extended, weaves into the lane & does a double clutch, hanging, sweet 'lil jumper that hits nothing but net.

Favorite Move Benchmarks:
(You know they're coming but you just can't stop them)

Bethel's -- Tim Madson's drive from the left wing to the FT line -- stop, pivot, shot fake, shot.

UST's -- Bryan Schnettler's – anywhere, anytime, dribble, dribble, stepback three - Sweet!

This is too bad.  Apparently his behavior had been a concern for some time. As I mentioned last week, I'd heard the Hamline coaches had repeated conversations with him about this even before the Bethel breakdown.  Hopefully, Foster earns a lesson from this & he can finish out his athletic career on the baseball field on a positive note.

Obviously, there were other issues involved in this situation, so who knows who or where to assign blame.  I still think it's sorta unusual that the Hamline team has now lost 4-5 players since the beginning of the season.

I believe this is a Wohler/Foster type thing and not a Foster/Jason Verdugo thing.

Can't really talk more about the situation as I really don't know exactly what the problem was. That's the team's business and I'm not getting into it.

Players that are now not on the roster from last year's semifinal team:
Kyle Foster (played 18 games and averaged 13 PPG)
Nate Heussner (played in seven games and averaged five PPG)
David Johnson (transferred to Ridgewater)
Brandon Hayes (???)
Joe Smock (started season on roster, never played in a game)

I saw Brandon Hayes play AAU & high school ball.  That kid had some amazing handles!!  I was at an AAU game once & an argument proceed to break out in the stands about how "bad" that white brotha was.  I almost died laughing!

I will be the first one to say that Bethel played harder than SJU...but facts are facts folks...32 free throws to 5?  Come on...no one disputed my points from earlier that MIAC teams are much alike and they defend alike...So making a point that Bethel does not foul is wrong...I spoke to Coach Smith today and he was a little upset that his motion offense was slowed by the clutching and grabbing going on in the paint...Bethel was the better team last night, I hope they beat St. Thomas Saturday so their fans can chant "just like football"...

Hey TommieHoops for Life...how about until the toms won an overtime game against SJU in hockey they were OFER against the Johnnies this year...needless to say...scoreboard baby!!!!!!!!!!
