All of this chatter about the Piper program makes me wonder if anyone else just has a hard time figuring out what's happening at Hamline?  They have gone from being a last place team when Coach Wohler got there to almost making the playoffs in year number one.  Then last year they make the playoffs and upset the Johnnies.  Now with the same team all returning, minus Charley Good, which wasn't a huge loss in my opinion, they are at the bottom of the MIAC and as has been pointed out by other posters, they have players quiting this season, players being removed from the team, and players transferring.

My only thought is that the coaching changes this year have had a much larger short term effect then was previously thought.  Dan Perrel has taken his defensive mind over to Bethel and it would appear that the Royals are better for it.   The other former assistant, Jeremy Tiers, moved onwards and upwards after only two seasons to a Division II program.  Could it be that the loss of these two coaches has negatively impacted the Piper program this season?  Are the lines of communication different with the new assistant coaches?  PI or anyone else with some inside knowledge or who is closer to this situation might be able to chime in and give their opinions.

This is just a thought and my objective was not to criticize any of the new coaches at Hamline, who I'm sure are making a positive impact.  I just can't believe that this team has performed so poorly this season with all of the high expectations.

Like I've said all season,  the people I've talked to have said it comes down to two things.

A. Perrel was a good balance with Wohler. Players I believe liked playing for Dan, and now without him I don't think there is a coach that can handle all the different personalities. I also believe Perrel's defensive approach was good for the Pipes. This year the only way they win is if their offense is better. Defense isn't winning games at Hutton.

B. Wohler's relationship with the players. Obviously players such as Sam Weiner and Jon DeRock are fine, but others that have moved on couldn't play his style.

There is no doubt with the players returning and a few freshman contributors such as Brake, Johansen and Kaiser, this team should've been top four. Cripes, STO is there.

BTW, what happened to Chris Babcock? 2.5 PPG while only shooting 33%. Last year he averaged 4 PPG, but did so many little things off the bench.

VOJ,

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I couldn't care less about Tommie/Johnnie hockey. Even though I am UST alum, I only partially pay attention to the football rivalry, and after this year, my ties with UST hoops will be a lot less as well. The only guys left that I know personally from my days there are Schnettler, Keating, Ike and Dwyer. I have known Teddy Archer since he was about 12, but that's about it as far as the younger faces.

Your boys lost to a better team, deal with it. The game was two days ago, and there's going to be some contact in college basketball that's not called. As Mr. Barreiro would say... GET OVER IT!!!!!!!! I still firmly believe the MIAC will come down to the Tommies and Johnnies, with UST coming out on top. I hope one of the Schafer twins gets served either with an Ike block, or as LBOW likes to put it, a posterized "badooka dunk" at Schoenecker.

Drake,

That graphic is absolutely hilarious. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw it. Looks like the dude from Office Space whaling on the fax/printer.

Pat...do you have a problem when people talk openly about the officiating?

It strikes me that a person in your position should be able to give a less emotionally charged, biased opinion of events. People rely on you as their eyes on the game and you owe them something balanced.

Drake...I was just making a concluding post sorry it rankled you...thanks for the shot.

Tommyhoops4Life...you are right about contact not being called and like I said to Drake it was just a concluding post...didn't know you guys were in control of how long something is talked about here on the boards, next time I will clear it with you both before posting...but after the last post directed to me that won't be happening anytime soon...

I do enjoy the banter and its fun to read

Pat-
It strikes me that a person in your position should criticize his customers less.

I for one enjoy reading other people's perspectives and, especially, their opinions. Their "position" doesn't matter to me much as far as posting here goes.

It seems the Johnnies were out played down the stretch. From what I have read the refs didn't make some calls but Bethel still put the ball in the hole. They also won the rebound battle in the last 5 minutes 15-4! With 5 of those 15 being offensive. The Royals clearly wanted this game more than the Johnnies and thats all there is to it.

Preach on, brotha! I just got the infamous -5 smite for criticizing Pat on the women's board  ::)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

bethelguy

enough about that game.  BU won (or was given the game by the refs) whatever.

lets talk about the hottest team in the league vs. the best team in the league (sorry Johnnies, but they are defending champs, in 1st place, ranked and have the MIAC POY).

I think the only way to beat UST is stop one of the big 3 and seriously slow down a 2nd.  Can BU do that?

Schnettler vs. Madsen? Strom? (I don't know who guarded him the 1st game, I would put Strom on him personally)
Keating vs. Meadowcroft - arguably the 2 best PFs in the league
Rosefelt vs. Moberg - probably the best Cs in the league too
Dwyer vs. Laugen - Dwyer is underrated but I think advantage BU here
Robinson vs. Strom/Madsen

If BU can play their big 3 to a draw, I like the Royal's bench and other 2 starters better.
If UST gets 78% of their points from BS/MK/IR again then my money is on the Tommies.

in fact here is the question...  What % of points does BU need to hold the big 3 to in order to win?

On the season they account for 70.5%

Bethelguy, Prior to SJU v. UST l, I felt if the Johnnies could hold the big 3 from UST to 50 or less they would have a good shot at winning the game! They held them to 45 and in fact did win. The J's bench came up huge in that win outscoring the UST bench 20-1.

Put it simply, If the 3 M's play the Big 3 to a draw, and that is a huge if, BET wins the ball game

Who is everyone's MVP with four games to play? A buddy of mine has jumped on the Schnettler bandwagon with both feet and is chirping about him daily. Where does he rank on people's lists?

UST_LBOW

I think Dwyer has been playing extremely well.  He is drastically underrated as a PG, particularly on the defensive end.  He's been getting a ton of steals and putting big time pressure on the guy bringing the ball up the court.

I would put him on the defensive team, but he won't get it because he doesn't get any publicity.  He will be a key on Saturday.

dead on abut Dwyer's defense... holding Phillips to 5 pts and only 6 shots is testimony of that.

After seeing both UST & BU play Weds, I'd say it will be as thrilling of a game as the first time  around. The big question in my mind is will BU be suffering from a mild letdown after the big win or will they be riding it even higher?  If BU plays like they did the 2nd half Weds, they will leave Schoenecker with a "W"... if UST plays like they did Wed, I will leave at half.

The prediction here is UST 75, BU 74, OT possible
