Don't be worried Wonka, I think your boy Wittwer is back to stay. Plus the Oles will get pummeled in their first round date with Bethel so their not going any where in the playoffs either.  ;D

Carleton & Gustavus conclude the regular season by playing each other at Carleton on Saturday.  But check this out, if the Carlies website can be trusted -- the Carlies must turn around & play at Gustavus in the opening round of the league playoffs on Monday night - a scant 48+ hours later! This sounds like a Gus Macker 3x3 quadruple elimination playoff contest!  :o ;D

Men's Basketball hosts Macalester College, 2/14/07
Northfield, Minn. (West Gym)
Result: L 77-81

Phillips Career Night for Naught, Scots Upset Carleton

Northfield, Minn. – Jake Phillips (Sr./Brainerd, Minn.) scored 30 points, making a school-record 7-for-7 from three-point range, but Carleton committed a season-high 17 turnovers and shot only 41 percent in the second half in falling, 81-77, to Macalester.

"The loss means the Knights (10-14, 9-10 MIAC) will hit the road for the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals, as they'll be the fifth seed and play at Gustavus Adolphus College in Monday's conference tournament opener. The Gusties lost at home to St. Olaf College tonight, but the fourth tiebreaker (descending order of losses) favored the Knights, as they split with Hamline but the Oles were swept by the Pipers."

I would concur with the Carl SID.  They go to the 4th tiebreaker which is losses in descending order.  Both teams have identical records vs. each team above them and below them until it gets to the 10th team in the league.  Carleton is 2-0 vs. Hamline and the Oles dropped one to the Pipers.  So identical records and Carleton gets the 5 seed and Olaf goes to BU.

Oleroll - Ugh. Clearly I'd love to argue with you, but I'm only capable of putting up as much fight here as the Gusties showed in the second half.

....

Drake - You mean what I posted about this strange GAC/CAR matchup a few days ago wasn't good enough for you?  :-*

I'm officially pulling for SJU on Saturday so, if the seeds play out, I can watch the Gustie women dominate the Bennies at 3pm in St. Joes and then head over to join the party in Collegeville at 7:30. Assuming there's room on the bandwagon, anyway. Heck, I might even be willing to wear one of my two Johnnie practice jerseys I own and smash my UST Nalgene for the event 8)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

On the women's basketball topic, here is a great achievement that happened over the weekend for GAC's Bri Monahan.

Well done, PI.

J's really performed well last night...hopefully they shoot that well against the Toms on Saturday...I see where SJU is number 2 in the latest West Region rankings...I counted up all of the teams in the rankings and came up with 58 on the ncaachampionships website, does that mean that those will likely be most of the field on selection day?

I just hope that Saturdays game is as competitive as the first matchup...

Oh and on the topic of women's basketball...I am a college hoops junkie, I like to watch it all and I think that from a competitive standpoint the girls get after it just as well as the guys do, yes its a different style of game, that does not mean its bad, in fact at its highest level the basketball is played well.

By the way...officials for the Tommies-Johnnies matchup as I understand them are Bob Schoeve, Panning and Jon MacClean...I was hoping for the Mauer, Stelton and Yorkovic(sp) trio who worked the first matchup and did an excellent job...well I guess we can just be happy that its not the Sensation...

Pat Coleman,

I am not harping on this issue.  I wrote something and debated it with others without any name-calling or personal attacks.  I was not and am not "trolling" even though I am not 100% sure what that word actually means.  If you would like to examine every word in all my posts and you still believe I should be kicked out, then do it, but it would be under protest.

Shescores 51- my bad on quoting you and putting the wrong name.  I guess we are even  ;)

Fins, Finally got the air pressure just right in those monster tires! The bandwagon is in tip top condition for Saturday's trip to Schoenecker! Please fill with the high octane stuff before you leave for Cabo!  ;D

Johnnies played very well last night. The Pipes were banged up with both Wiener and Thrasher spending long stretches at the end of the Pipes bench working on their various maladies. I don't think their health would have mattered. The J's were on a mission. Senior night in C-Ville and the only junior starter stole the show. Lieser was rediculous in the first half! 20 points on 8-10 shooting including 4-4 from beyond the arc. One of those 3 was a bank ( I wasn't close enough to hear if he called it or not ;D). Johnnies as a team had 28 assists versus 13 turnovers. Lieser, Ohme and Nick Johnson had 5 each. Ohme had a couple that were hilight reel material. He had one in the first half where he was driving down the left side of the lane for what looked to be a contested lay-up when he flipped an over the shoulder no look pass to one of the Schafers for an uncontested bucket!

The only answer Ham had and it was a weak one was DeRock. He hit lay ups and jump shots but couldn't do it all.

This could have been a name your score game for Coach Smith. He chose to start going deep on his bench at about the 8 minute mark and the J's already at the 80+ point mark.

Saturday should be very interesting. The Johnnies are playing very good team basketball right now! They have and opportunity to exorcise the demon of last years blow out loss at Schoenecker! If they can find a way to win this game, I like their chances in the playoffs. They are a very formidable team when playing at home! I don't think the Tommies would relish a return visit to Sexton!

Let the posturing begin for Saturday!

Ahhh, DM, I do believe Mr. Sager was making a rather clever tongue in cheek comment regarding Handel's Messiah in response to your spelling of the word handles.

Nites -and that's why Mr. Sager is a HOFer (D3 hoops Hall of Famer).  Some of his humor I don't even get .   ;D

You beat me to the punch but I'd noticed his post earlier. I was going to post something to effect of how Greg is a true renaissance man. Within the span of an hour, he made a classical & pop musical reference on two different hoops message boards.  In addition to the Handel post on our board, he made a reference to the musician Prince, on his home board, the CCIW board.

Quote from: AndOne on February 15, 2007, 03:54:16 AMA highlight of the evening actually occured in the JV game. With Elmhurst leading by 2  and the time remaining almost zero, NCC guard Dean Prince launched an approx 60 footer. The ball left Dean's hands about half a second before the horn, which sounded as the ball was in the air. The long bomb found nothing but net to give the Cards a victory over Coach Dan "Digger" Doyle's Jays.

I saw in the box that Dean Prince got 16 minutes of varsity tick tonight as well for NCC, while Barringer got his first DNP of the season. Is Barringer hurt, or is Raridon just shaking things up amongst his guard cadre?

It's nice to see Prince finally start to get some varsity minutes. He must've purified himself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

Nice post Sum!  Looks like you've been polishing up those sportswriter skillz!  But what I wanna know is this -- are you going to time your posts so your 1000th post arrives with a big splash on Saturday, or do you make your posts in the Tom Kelly, former Twins manager's approach - "fellas, I play the game not too high, not too low, but one post at a time?"  ;)

Personally, I'm working on a special, commemorative post should we end up with a Tommies -Johnnies tournament championship game.  In the meantime, I'll leave most of the posturing & woofing for the young cats.

Based on last night's scores, it seems the Royals & Johnnies have served notice to the Tommies – we're coming to play & we're playing hard. :o 8) ;D

Willy – I did notice your earlier post about the GAC-CARL potential match-up but I thought the idea was somewhat of a reach at the time.   But now, who knows what to think?  Talk about your wildly inconsistent teams?!?  It's almost as if they deserve to play each other in their own version of "Groundhog Day" – over, and over again.  FYI for you posters – if the Carleton administration doesn't put a muzzle on the Carleton SID department, read the Carleton game day summary & reviews. They tend to get a bit "cheeky" in their coverage.

I'm guessing TH4L will be working on a special article profiling how both schools from Northfield made the league playoffs together for the first time since - ?

And if all this basketball news & events isn't enough check this out:  If the Ts & Js or any other MIAC game isn't enough for you on Saturday, #1 ranked & undefeated DII Winona State is taking on a very tough Concordia U. - St. Paul Saturday night in St. Paul.  The first time these two teams met, Winona eked out an OT win.  Interestingly enough, while browsing one of the other D3 message boards, I came across this Winona State clip that some of you dunk aficionados might appreciate.
