Ugly Ugly game by SJU.  Not a fun one to watch at all.

Sorry, but they do not deserve to make it to the tourny.

CMOB - Hey bud, good to read you too... glad to see you are still chompin' on "tripple burgers" and rollin' around on roller skates!

The Game -

Congratulations UST!

Wow, I have not paid that close attention to hoops this year so I might be off base, but the MIAC is weak.  If SJU is the best competition available to test the Tommies, they might be in trouble.  That team [SJU] does not belong in the national tournament.  They are just going to give the MIAC a bad name.  UST will struggle to have success in the tournament if they don't play aggressive (I'm going to kill you) basketball, they certainly haven't been prepared by the garbage they faced in the regular season.

Maybe it was the lackluster UST defense (sju4life) that kept the game within 30, but if I have to watch Westman or Leisure play basketball again, I am more likely to stab myself than I am to acknowledge they have game.  I have a question: Has any player in MIAC history regressed more in 4 years than Matt Ohme, besides Brett Boese?  The guy used to be decent, and now he has developed into a role player on a team that doesn't have a go to player, does that make sense to anyone else?

Did I see people earlier making comparisons between Westman and Schnettler?  That is ridiculous.  If Westman sold his soul to the devil he might be able to have his name mentioned in the same sentence as Schnettlers, but if he hasn't than we should regard him as he is... a piece of garbage who has about as much "clutchness" as Colin Montgomery.  What have we come to in college basketball when a player can go 0-11 in a game and be considered a player.  I was always told if you miss a shot 3 times in row, you shouldn't be taking the shot.  Schnettler might be a prick (if I trained him right, he is) but he is the best damn shooter in the history of D3 hoops, probably more.

This game was a joke, just like last Saturday when they played SJU.  And, I only feel bad for UST if they think they have tasted anything resmebling success, when they go into the national tourney and play teams that are legitimately good.  I saw them play LAX (without Ike) and they got worked.  LAX isn't even the best team in the WIAC let alone the top team in the region.  They better bring their "A" game or it is going to be a short run for the MIAC.  If SJU makes it out of any round I will be thoroughly impressed, because they are absolute garbage.

My only saving grace was seeing TH4L with his press pass... after 37 posts claiming he had a press pass, so he didn't have to worry about a ticket, I was concerned he might not make it.  But there he was with his press pass, just as advertised.

Johnnies get absolutely piss pounded tonight!!! Westman= WORTHLESS, and Lieser SUCKS!!!!!!!!!! a combined 1-18 from the field for 2 pts. Choke a little more fellas!!!!!!!!!! The only kid who looked like he even wanted to be out there was Ohme. Lieser and Westman are now a combined 4-48 in their last two games at Shoenecker. I have a dislocated kneecap and even I could do better than that! You Johnnies are an absolute joke!

VOJ

Give props to the Tommies they are playing at a very high level right now, they should make a run deep into the tourney...minimum the ELITE 8, and the J's just didn't have the intensity to match last night.  The Shoe is a tremendous homecourt advantange, it should serve the T's well if they get to host games in the NCAA's.

I know based off two games against a quality team like UST the Johnnies might not look like a tournament team, however just like in DI you judge a team based on its body of work, therefore they deserve to be in.  They have two convincing wins over a decent Gustavus team which beat the Tommies( i know Tommy fans hard to remember but true), and they split with Bethel losing a game at Arden Hills which was closer than the final score would indicate.

Are they going to be one and done in the tourney?  Who knows, because anything can happen, much of the same was said about the SJU football team this fall...not good enough, a shell of former teams, and all they did was get to the ELITE 8 and if they could have controlled their turnovers would have played for the DIII title vs the Machine...that is Mount Union for those of you who don't know.  Its all about the mental makeup...it has to get right and put these two games behind them, they have to get back to doing the little things...setting screens, tougher D and Lieser and Westman need to hit a few shots early in their next game, if there is a next game, for them to make some noise.

Enjoy the spoils Tommy fans...because from what I can tell a MAJOR step back is coming your way, unless 3 talented transfers are lured to St. Paul again.

Quote from: miacmaniac on February 23, 2007, 02:36:45 PMSomeone posted earlier that SJU will be looser and that the pressure is on UST. I disagree. I think the pressure is on SJU...UST can afford to lose and still make the NCAA... SJU probably can, but is not a lock.

I don't know what data you're using to make that assumption about SJU not being a Pool C lock, Maniac, but if you look over in the Pool C room you'll see just how well SJU shapes up nationally: 10.391 QOWI coming into tonight (good for 15th in the nation, and five of the teams ahead of them have already clinched Pool A berths), and a sparkling .870 regional winning percentage.

The Johnnies are a lock, Maniac. St. John's is in, win or lose. Book it.
That may be the case GS, but the point I made wasn't that they would or wouldn't be in the tourney, it was that the pressure would be on them to play well. The pressure was on them and they were far more wound up by it that UST was.  I'll be glad if SJU makes the field, and they are deserving, despite their inability to play competitively in Schoenecker.

VOJ-- as you SJU football fans are quick to note, success lures talented transfers to SJU for football (and the list of D-I and II transfers who have helped SJU football is rather long)...maybe the same applies elsewhere in other sports?

The best part of the night was either the sixer of PBR in the parking lot, or watching OAS try to sell the first five issued tickets at the gate. Wouldn't have been tough if this old bag wasn't taking used tickets out of the trash and selling them to people for $3 instead of the listed $7. For one Tommie blonde, she said, she's a poor college student. Sure she is. Thanks to the extra four tickets that were given to OAS, he broke even.

Westman and Lieser somehow got worse from the previous Saturday.

Schaefer for got the baseline hook at home.

Brink forgot he was the sixth man of the year.

The Tommies just know how to get up for a big game and the Johnnies looked like a deer in headlights. Their bench did nothing, besides Fogt, while the Tommies no-namers (Tommy Shimek, Dan Grant, etc) got O rebs, putbacks and little floaters in the lane.

Has any player in MIAC history regressed more in 4 years than Matt Ohme, besides Brett Boese?

Has anybody else endured half as many injuries as Boese and still managed to contribute something to his team?

As much as I'd like to say UST will find bodies to replace the seniors, history suggests otherwise. They struggled in the 2003-04 season after graduating most of their team. Of course, SJU is in a similar boat for next year. But there will be plenty of time to discuss next season later.

For UST, I wouldn't be surprised by anything in the tourney. They could go one-and-done, or they could make a deep run. There are a lot of good teams in the field, and most anybody can beat anybody else. SJU might pull out a win depending on a matchup, but they won't have an easy time with anybody.

Well, my prediction of the Johnnies winning by 6 got flushed down the toilet in a convincing fashion....boy was I off base on that one. UST probably played as good a game as they have all year and flat out have more and better athletes than SJU. The matchups were a serious problem for them and UST took advantage of every one of them. Hats off to he Tommies...if they keep playing like that, you have to believe they have a good chance of making a serious run in the tourney, especially if they get a couple of games at home.

My question is: how in the hell did the Johnnies win the first game and more questioning is how did GAC beat them (UST)? Do they just not play well on the road?

Cmob....referring to WW's question, how did those skates hold up yesterday? I think I saw you pull up at a Wendy's for an order of two, count 'em two, triple cheeseburgers.....so you had to be well nourished to fight the elements!

Back to hoops....hopefully, the Johnnies are in the tourney and if so, they need to regroup....and fast! Not sure how long it will take for them to pull their tails out, but if they hope to have a chance, they need to forget about the UST games and load up on some positive vibes. If they have good senior leadership, that will happen. It would also be good for the MIAC to have that representation.....and come tourney time, anything can happen.

In closing, the comment some loser made about WW fading in his playing years at GAC....you don't have a clue pal. If more athlete's played with the guts, intensity and "team come first attitude" that he had, they'd be much better off.

March Madness is finally here....ya gotta love it!!

Ironically, the name Mike Keating comes to mind.

I do agree that the Mig was way out of line dissing Ohme and Boese...both of whom had excellent careers and contrbuted greatly to their teams' successes.

Drake--you are a stand up dude.  I have given up drinking so I used your contributed funds to a Snelling Melt.  The best sandwich on the menu.

Yes, reselling tix was an adventure.

SJU looked awful.  I know Andy Gilbert hated the MAC gym but I think Westman hates the Shoe even more.

Bethel seemed to have their starting five in attendance.  I was hoping they'd come out in the second half to make it a game.

D3Hoops released their NCAA predicted field. Tommies dont get a bye in the West as the second seed, and the Johnnies are moved to the Midwest as the 4th seed. UST is slated to play Loras, while SJU is predicted to take on UW-Oshkosh. D3Hoops has been very accurate in predicting the field, and what the matchups will be in past seasons.
