Greek Tragedy

Admittedly, I don't know much about the MIAC.  A couple of years ago I played in the MIAC pick em league, but switched over to the MWC because their schools are closer to me (I'm over by Lake Michigan).  I'm obviously a Point fan, so we don't get over to the border much.  If I lived closer and was a fan of say, River Falls, Stout, Eau Claire or La Crosse, I'd make myself more familiar with the MIAC since those schools play you guys more.  Unfortunately, I saw the Gustos beat my Pointers on their way to the Final several years ago.

I'll admit that I think the WIAC is superior and, not like the WIAC, the MIAC seems to have the same two or three teams contending for the title...Gustos and St. Thomas in recent memory, so it is nice to see a new face like St. John's.  I may be way off base with the "contending" teams and the numbers, but, like I said, I don't follow the MIAC much.

Good places to eat (off the top of my head)

Bill's Pizza or Topper's (if you are in a hotel, though Bill's pizza has a dining area)
Guu's (downtown restuarant-good burgers, beers etc.  it's a bar at night and serves food during the day and evening)
Springville Wharf (great for the Italian cheesy fries)
Hilltop Pub (a popular spot for visiting WIAC teams)
The Final Score (bar that serves food)
The Wooden Chair (downtown, across from Guu's)

Hope to meet some of the MIACers on Saturday.

Westman's 31 is a career-high according to SJU's website. I don't want to be Mr. Negative, but the Js blow an 18-pt first half lead? They at least hit the big shots when they needed to and got a win. As good as that is for the MIAC, they'll get a bit of a lesson taught to them Saturday at Steven's Point. Sorry SJU fans, but the Johnnies have less than zero chance of winning there. I'd love to see an upset as MM mentioned so that UST can host the regional!

Looks like Carroll upsets Augustana tonight as well. I'm sure the Tommies are quite happy that they don't have to face Augustana, but it sounds like Carroll is no slouch either. 32 from their top guy tonight, wow! Should be a fun one on Saturday.

although i seem to be hated lately... i feel like tonight was a great showing on why I CAN COMPARE WESTMAN TO SCHNETTLER, this is the way tyler plays most of the time and happened to have a few bad games at tommiville!!!

Now on to the stevens point debate.  I agree that we "SJU" are clearly the underdogs but to say we  have a below zero chance of winning is something to disagree with.  Looking at points roster they are not extrememly tall giving craig schaefer a great chance of having a great game.  If IKE CANT come close to stopping him at 6'8 then i dont see anyone at point stopping him.  I mean cmon the kid is shooting over 60% on the year.  If we can get tyler to play close to what he did tonight and shoot well and have leisure drop another 14-18 points like he did tonight and is always capable of doing then I do think we have a chance!!!  Not many teams have a 1,2,3, punch in westman, leisure, and schaefer.  Im not prediciting a win but if all three play like they did tonight it will at least be closer then everyone wants to give SJU credit for!!!

I would contribute the early lead to the Johnnies hitting shots and playing with a passion at the start where as Loras came out a little flat and didn't hit many shots. Thus an 18 point lead. Loras played with alot of fire after the Johnnie run to start the game.

nice shot of Westman on D3Hoops front page.

Nice shot but I can't read the story....whats the deal Pat?

I couldn't read the story either.

Jon Krull is a solid post defender.  He plays a lot bigger than his 6'4" height.  If need be, Point also plays a lot of help defense, doubling down if necessary and stuff like that.

Point usually plays "in your face" defense as well.  Unlike previous Pointer basketball, this team is willing to outscore you as well.  I would never give a team a zero % chance of beating any other team, let alone Point.  They've been in some huge dog fights this year.  I'm sure St. John's has a solid team and I'm looking forward to playing them and seeing some MIAC posters.

Point has a 1-2-3-4-5 punch! lol.  Four of their five starters have been named WIAC player of the week and Khalifa El-Amin is the prototypical point guard, though he lacks a size.  He doesn't score much, but he can shoot the ball.  Last week in the WIAC tourney final, all five starters scored in double-figures (13-16 points).  You better come prepared to defend. :-)

Your resume impresses me.  Point, Oshkosh, Whitewater (or was that Carroll game played in Waukesha?)  For a MIACer, you sure get around!  ;)  Maybe I'll meet you next weekend if everything goes right for both of our teams!

Story on last night's Game from the Daily Planet!

Old School appreciate the tips for eateries. What are there for hotel accomodations?

Maybe once VOJ shows up he can give you a recap of the Johnnies. Pointspecial set the bar awfully high with his review of the Pointers!

let's hope all teams - MIAC and non-MIAC - have safe journeys wherever they are going to and returning from, this weekend and always.

17 pages. Wow. Great recap. Between the two snowfalls we have almost 3 feet of snow in Hutch. I'm glad I stocked up Wednesday.

Congrats to St. John's. Go Johnnies and Tommies on Saturday!

abominable_snowman

i love it!  crazy snowy weather + tournament upsets + outstanding commentary = snowman's paradise.

if I were westman I would try to take a piece of sexton with me to steven's point.  glue part of the court to his shoe or sumthin.

let's go MIAC!!!! (followed by appropriate clapping rythym.)

I just can't see the Johnies keeping this game within 20 pts tomorrow.  They are just a 100% different team on the road.  For some reason they lose all confidence and play terribly on the road.  I hope I am wrong, but if the Johnies can keep it within 20 pts, I would see that as a victory.  They are going to get pounded.

sju4life, you need to shut up about comparing Westman to Schnettler...how can you compare someone who has taken 237 3 pointers (Schnettler)  compared to 167 (Westman), who shoots 47.7% compared to Westmans 42.5%, not to mention that Schnettler is shooting 92% from the free throw line and Westman is shooting 79% (that is a very telling sign of a pure shooter).  Take a look at Westmans numbers in their 6 losses away from home.

                                    2pt     3pt
Tyler Westman.......    3-10     2-7
                                  3-13     2-10
                                  2-12      0-5
                                  5-13      2-6
                                  1-12      1-7
                                  0-11      0-5

He is shooting 19% from the floor in their 6 loses and 17% from three point land...are you serious?!!  The kid just doesn't have any consistency away from home.  I am sorry, but you need to SHUT UP!!!  Just look at those numbers and you are trying to compare him to one of the best three point shooters that the MIAC has ever seen!!!  You can't even compare him to any of the top pure shooters that the MIAC has seen over the past decade or so, he wouldn't even be in the top 15 and you are trying to compare him to the best this league has probably ever seen.  You are not smart.  Plus, no one in the MIAC this year was face guarded and  not helped off of as much as Schnettler was.    And he still shot lights out better than Westman.  You need to give it up man.

Now, I probably sound like a Johnie hater, but I actually am not.  I actually have great respect for Ohme (he needs to shoot more), and got to know him a little bit during my days.  I hope they can take some confidence with them up to SP and represent the MIAC well.

Watch - you still around?  Which team in the league - MIAC, would you say Loras most reminded you of?  Obviously  I wasn't at the barnburner, but based on the radio game description I thought of a disciplined Hamline, or Bethel without the big horse in the middle.  It sounded like a number of the baskets Loras scored was on athletic drives to the basket.

The Loras club sounds similar to the Carroll club that knocked off Augustana last night,  Big difference I guess is that Carroll has a legit superstar in guard Nathan Drury.
