the TommiesCarlies & Knights could very well be in the market for a quality PG next year.

Yeah, it should be a heated battle between Coach Kalland and Coach Peterson to bring that guy to Northfield, right Drake;D Youre spot on with Nicolai, he could be a very good PG in this league, and would be a nice grab for either UST or Carleton. Similar situation to 05 and 06, when Drake and Johnson had narrowed their choices to UST and Carleton. Of course, Nicolai isnt looking at his position and seeing an All American, a DII transfer, and a 3 year starter all in front of him like those 2 did. The "youll start here, youll hardly play there" card is out the window this year for Carleton, so maybe Nicolai sees the Tommies as a better fit and bucks the trend.

Oops - My bad Kneez.  That's similar to Jimmy C.  referring to the clay courts of Wimbledon. I fixed it.  ;D

Tmerts is always good for some worthless and redundant info, PI. It's usually limited to the football board though ::)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

(1) They like beer over there?
(2) I missed it?

You should have posted it here where it would have been of some use for the playoffs.

For more in the worthless and redundant category, and in another contribution to workplace productivity everywhere, since the MIAC is out of the playoffs folks can at least watch D1 conference playoff games at espn360 for free.

I haven't played organized basketball since I was a freshman in high school, and I must admit the basketball program affected my decision to attend Gustavus. There's nothing like watching college hoops in person, and I'd had so much exposure to Gustie hoops in high school that I never could have brought myself to root for any other team anyway.

As for significant "recruits" I think we can safely say that a relatively unknown, yet very capable, player from a small town in southern Minnesota will shop up in Saint Peter next fall. I've also heard rumors that a certain senior who hasn't played in awhile might try a comeback, but his chances of making the team or contributing are minimal.  ;)

Although  there's plenty of talent left in the program, the Gustie seniors will certainly be missed. Jay Stien quietly developed into a steady presence under the basket with good hands for rebounds. Gustie fans may mercilessly mock the opposing nerd, but we're certainly proud of our own nerd, Tyler Kramer. Based on seeing Justin Degrood playing JV as  sophomore, I always felt reassured knowing that if something crazy with injuries or ejections happened, he would be ready to step in. Though not the "point guard" Andrew Olson was the grease that made the offense work. He knew when to be a patient, and when to launch the NBA-range 3-pointer. (I'm not sure I've seen him make any normal-range 3's). Meanwhile, he played great defense.

Obviously, Phil Sowden will be missed. As much as I'll miss the basketball player, I'll miss the musician even more. For those of you who don't know, Phil is also among the top pianists at Gustavus. If any of you want to see a completely different side of Phil I highly recommend attending either his recital or the jazz band concert. The recital is at 3:30 on Saturday March 24th, and the Jazz Concert is on Saturday, April 14th at 7:30. I recommend the jazz concert, as he's more of a jazz pianist. Either way, it's a chance to see him perform without having to worry about referees.  ;) I'll be glad to answer any questions, and I'll remind everybody when the time is closer.

I witnessed a sloppy, ugly Northfield/Faribault boys game last night in the Section 1AAA playoffs. Faribault has a nice shooting guard by the name of Eric Hildebrandt that is graduating. Kind of a streaky shooter and scorer in the Big Nine, but definitely a threat from the perimeter. I have no idea where he's going, but if he wants to play basketball and stay in MN, his best bet is the MIAC. If he goes to a MIAC school, he probably wouldn't start right away, but he could come off the bench and be an impact player. Even though they lost, he hit some big shots last night.

A little birdie says the Johnnies may be getting a former two-star athlete next year that was all-state caliber in both football and basketball. He might be transferring from the U.

PI - Please tell me you aren't talking about Kuznia. He was a bad basketball player on a terrible team, though supposedly a stud in football.

PS - I watched 16 straight hours of hoops yesterday on TV. Life is rough  8)

16 hours!! Fantastic.  I'm running out of memory on my DVR.  But at least I can get through 3 games in the time it takes me to watch 1 live one.  This saturday is gonna be awesome...and if you need a break from basketball, I want to plug fellow Tommy  BJ Viau's Hoopathon (more basketball, and then some).  It's a charity event and you can find details at the website.

Nites,

Northfield beat Faribault 48-42 in the 1-8 matchup. Filzen faced a box and 1 with a double and triple team the whole night and still scored a game-high 23. Faribault is just terrible this year, they only won three games all year, but they played probably the best they had all year Wednesday night. They led by 12 with eight minutes to play and then got outscored 19-1 to lose. They feature the Princeton offense, but they don't have a post presence, their PG was mediocre at best and Hildebrandt is really their only threat. The Raiders get Austin Saturday in the semis.
