..and special mention to Rosefelt for being named Co-Player of the Year in the West Region.

In addition to Schnettler and Rosefelt being named to the first team, Tim Madson of Bethel made the 2nd team. Congrats to him, as hes one of only 2 sophomores to make the 3 teams.

Where was Keating on the All-Region team?  I thought the MIAC's best player should have been on at least the 3rd team...by the way...why not just call the 3rd team the Cheese League's other best players...what is up with that?

I see Madson is on the second team...which is nice but was he really the 3rd best player in the MIAC?

With this recent talk of high school ball on the board, I decided to get some of my basketball needs met & took the drive out to Wayzata last night to catch the sectional semifinals between Hopkins–Minnetonka & Bloomington Jefferson–Shakopee.  Little did I realize that I was going to witness the stumble of the Hopkins hoops dynasty.  Hopkins, with U of MN recruit Blake Hoffarber had been ranked #1 virtually all year & had soundly crushed Tonka twice earlier in the season during conference play.

However, Tonka had other plans, took the air out of the ball & pulled off the upset of the season beating Hopkins 55-53.

By the way, until last year's state tournament I was never a big Hoffarber fan, but he has steadily worked on his game & each year kept getting better & better. Last night was no exception, & he single-handedly kept his floundering team in the game.  I believe he scored 21 of his team's 25 points in the 2nd half on an assortment of runners, layups & treys!

I happened to be sitting behind some Tonka high school fans & after they got done whooping & hollering their team's win, I think it dawned on them the enormity of their team's win & the legend of Blake Hoffarber:

Kid 1: "Dang (he used stronger language), do you know we just beat Hopkins & f***ing Hoffarber?!?"

Kid 2: "Yeah, in a way I kinda feel sorry for Hoffarber."

Kids 1 & 3 looked at Kid 2 like he was crazy & in unison: "What?!?"

Kid 1: "Hey, he's won two state championships & he's got a D-1 scholarship!"

Kid 2: "I know but..."

Kid 3: "Dude, shut up.  Hoffarber won an ESPY & went to the Playboy Mansion."

We all started laughing!  Guess it's tough to argue with irrefutable logic like that!

I know this isnt an area a lot of you are familiar with, but UST is recruiting a shooter, and a pretty good scorer, from out of Eau Claire, WI. Matt Jacobs, a 6'2" guard who averaged 15 a game, and was first team All-Big Rivers (a pretty decent conference in western Wisconsin, composed of large, D1 enrollment schools). Holds the record at Memorial for 3 pt baskets (almost 200 for his career). Good player, could be someone that makes an impact after a season, or two, of coaching (and expanding his game) on the JV. Though, considering the Tommies relative lack of outside shooting ability for next year, he could find himself in contention for a spot if he shores up his all around game this summer.

Kneez - what was the kid's name that transferred from Hamline to UST & played for half a season? This happened about a 1-2 years ago, was it Travis Jacobs? Is this kid you're talking about any relation?

Jacobs comes from the Big Rivers Conference, which is the only D1 (largest division, based on enrollment) conference in western Wisconsin.  Jacobs can definately shoot the 3, but is a bit streaky.  He may miss four/five straight shots, but then hit a few in a row.  He will probably also need to hit the weight room a bit.  If he puts a lot of effort into his game, he could become a good "zone buster" type player at the next level.

ustbumkneez

Buf, I think almost every recruit who comes into the MIAC needs to "hit the weight room", so that wont differentiate him from 90% of the freshmen entering the conference. Hes a scorer, and like a lot of scorers in high school, he was not challenged to do more than that by his coaches. He is lacking in a few key areas for someone his size (ballhandling, defense), which is why I mentioned him as someone who could possibly make an impact as a soph/junior. Like I said, considering the (perceived) lack of outside shooting for next years Tommies, (Hennington and Tuma are the only guys on either Varsity or JV that can knock it down from outside on an even occasional basis) that process could be expedited for Jacobs should he put in a good deal of work on fine tuning his game this summer.

Kneez, You must have suffered through that SJU-UST JV game at the Shoe as well! ;D

haha, Sum, the first half performance in that game was enough to question the future of Tommie basketball.

At one point I think the score was 15-2 in favor of the Js & looked like the final score would be 34-8.  Ouch.

Interesting discussion on guard play.

I think it's difficult for any FY player to come in & make a significant splash their freshman year.  Personally, I tend to think it's even more difficult for a FY guard to come in & get key minutes than a post player.  There are a ton of adequate/good guards in the league, but not nearly as many good post players.  This is one of the reasons why I think fans & players were so impressed with Hamline's Jon DeRock a year ago & to a lesser extent, Augsburg Jon Cassens & GAC's Jesse Van Sickle this year.

(This is my half baked posting bait to try & lure additional convo to the board)
