Quote from the wire service story on Tubby:

The fact of the matter is that Smith and his staff hadn't recruited big-time players and weren't living up to the expectations placed on him. According to numerous sources, Smith was given an ultimatum — to fire his staff or be fired.

I suspect the expectations of the Minnesota fans are somewhat less than those of the average Kentucky fan! ;)

Winona State is a solid all-around team, and I'm not surprised after watching them that they beat the Gophs this year. Malvik is a sickening shooter, and Smith is a beast inside who also has some crafty moves. I think their best player is Jonte Flowers, he went down early in the first half with what looked like a nasty knee injury, but he came back and was flat out the difference in the second half. He had like six steals and most of them were turned into baskets. Nobody can play with them, and they're one of the few teams I've seen that can play and be successful at virtually any tempo.

I'm loving the choice of Tubby Smith to coach the Gophs. If nothing else, it will fill up Williams Arena again next year. Let's not get ahead of ourselves and think they'll win the Big 10 next year, but it's a nice start to rebuilding the program, and hopefully getting the big HS players to stay in-state and play for him.

Im just elated that I have the opportunity to hear Trent Tucker commentate once again. Its been too long. Im glad halftime of the NCAA game is coinciding with the half for South vs. Buffalo, so I can watch Trent point out that Buffalo needs to "score the basketball" (that Trent line always gets me) and fire out other, classic, Tuckerisms. I just wish there was a Lakeville guy with the last name Carr, so he could point out that a key to the second half was for South to "get the Carr started". Never before was a 9th man in the NBA so crucial to a teams success as Chris Carr was to the Wolves circa 1998. I like the tenacity of this South team, how physical they are and the fact that theyll knock someone around. Considering its basically a miniature of Lakevilles football team, I guess its not that surprising.

I think it was quite a coup for the Gophers to get Tubby. As a Badger fan, its hard to see such a good coach and quality guy come to the Metro. I cant revel in his demise like I did with Mason, or chuckle at his ineptitude as was the case with Monson. Gophs get a guy with a proven track record for winning (73% at Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky), and a relatively clean history in terms of recruiting and player conduct (a mandatory factor considering "Clemgate"). With Michigans job available, and the sources saying Tubbys job was okay in Lexington (though rumors circulated that hed have to fire his staff to keep his job in Kentucky), it was real big for Maturi to lure Tubby. Hes made two really good hires for the athletic programs premiere sports, and I think this move will help to reduce the migration of Minnesotas top prep players. A guy with a national championship and 4 Elite Eights appearences will catch a lot of local talents eyes. I think its a lot more than anyone in the area thought the Gophers would be able to bring in once the Monson firing was announced.

ok, i know this is not a high school blog, but here goes.   i have honestly never heard of brady soule until i read his name on this board yesterday.   but i really need to know which of these is harder to watch or hear:

----soule's ill-conceived shots ricocheting off the board during crucial times late in the buffalo game
---lakeview south's uniforms
---the officials freezing buf's ft shooter near the end of the game
---trent tucker

my guess is that anyone could reasonably vote for all four.
it appeared the officials nearly cost buffalo the game when they fouled out soule with 6 minutes remaining, giving l.s. a chance to make some better decisions down the stretch.   but buffalo showed great courage in finishing the game and winning with their best player sitting on the bench.

tubby?   sweet.   can't believe that the u of m landed on it's collective feet after it's latest big ten swan dive.

back to the ncaa's . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

haha... K+ to you two... and I'd give one to Ike if I could! :D :D :D :o ;D

That beats the random weird HS project I found for a future Wheaton player that had his redoing a country song called "She thinks my tractor's sexy" by a million. :)

I'll have to add the Ike version of Promiscuous Girl to the list of my favorite random remakes of music videos... that includes things like the fan version of My Hips Don't Lie:D :D :D

I think Maturi outkicked his coverage getting a guy like Tubby...I really think that the Michigan and Iowa jobs are more attractive right now...he can win here, but and its a big BUT...the guy needs better recruiters...he has been missing out on talent, they don't have a top 50 player signed yet for Kentucky and have had ok players but not great players like in the past...remember he won a title with Pitino's kids...

The success of the two major hires will be Maturi's mark on the University.  I recently told a friend that I would die(im 37) before the U would win a Big 10 title, I may need to amend that...but not by much...its tough to win at Minnesota, especially now with where they are in the standings.

Glad to see Winona State doing well in the Elite 8...I feel bad for Rocori, Bob Brink is a class guy and great coach...but to lose a lead like they did, should never happen.

i loved clem and i still do...

Cmob- you can count me in the group that once "loved" Clem Haskins.  I also loved those teams that Haskins put out on the floor – they were fun to watch, & they worked their butts off.  But I don't know if my Gopher heart ever recovered from the blow of "Gangelgate," & Monson was not a coach who won the fans' hearts or respect.  So when I heard the Gophs landed another likeable coach with a similar background - hardscrabble upbringing, rags to riches, hard work, discipline, team first type & all that other stuff, my first reaction is – "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me."  I don't want to be fooled again.

Yet, hope springs eternal for some of us. Although I'm sure it doesn't matter to him, I'm guardedly optimistic & put out the small welcome mat for Mr. Smith.  I wish him & the Gophers well.

In the meantime - let me hear a "he's got to believe in hisself"  ;D from Trent Tucker!  ;D

Kneez, you & I might be in the minority of opinions on this, but I also like listening to Trent Tucker.  In a world of smooth talking, bland announcers, I think Tucker's a refreshing change of pace.  :D

All Tubby needs to do is TRY and keep some of these kids in Minnesota. No big recruits have even given the U a look in the past couple years. If he can get two or three solid Minnesota kids a year I think he can turn the program around somewhat. Apparently Gregg Doyel does think so. Here is his article from sportsline.com.

DP, I think we definitely are a vast minority. TT does make the game more fun, and one can certainly not call him bland nor mistake him for a smooth talker.

I saw Ikes videos when he "released" them at various points this winter, but didnt want to point out his hobby lest it turn to fodder for hecklers. Theyre entertaining, no doubt. I like the requisite shots of male Tommies who apparently cant "dance" and lip sync at the same time. Theres about 3 of those in every video.

Winona survives against Central Missouri to make it to Saturdays DII championship. Great game to watch, as the Warriors came back from being down double digits in the 2nd half to win it in OT. Jonte should swap places with Michael, I think thats the Flowers Wisco needs in the crunch (32 pts on 11-15 shooting).

For as clutch as Acie is, youd think a layup would be automatic.

How bout Buffalo? They played exceptional basketball, very entertaining NCAA commercial substitute. All that without their best player. Solid. I think theyre taking the title, because its hard for me to go with a team whose coach thinks staying in a 2-3 zone with your team up 1 and under 15 seconds to play is a good idea. McGuiggan got a VERY good look, and Im surprised it didnt go down.
