First Team All West Region and Fourth Team D3 All American Joe Werner, of UW-La Crosse, had a workout with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday. Anyone who saw UWL play this year knows Werner is a bit of an athletic freak, and his workout numbers were pretty good (4.78 40, 36" vert). Not that I think hell be drafted, or even invited to training camp, but it brought up an interesting question. Anyone in the MIAC with the physical tools to maybe have a similar experience?

Kneez, +k as well, use your powers wisely, unlike the rest of us!

Drake, nice pic! That is a little piece of heaven on earth, 13th green at Augusta National! There isn't a picture or a painting in the world that can do that hole justice.  ;)

Foster, is one...are there a great many other 2 sport athletes playing MIAC men's bball?

Who are they? Who's the best?

GAC's DeLo is currently leading the team with a .438 batting average as an infielder, beating out reigning MIAC MVP by a few percentage points. He doesn't appear to hit for much power though. Tyler Kaus is also on the baseball team.

No one else pops to mind for the Gusties as a two-sporter.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

I'm going to guess that there are a lot more than you think.  CMob could give you a bit more information, but Carleton has at least 6 hoopsters that play two sports: Kootsikas, Johnson, Ramey and Hanks play football and Melson and Merriman play baseball.

I understand that little Koots is a pretty fair two sport athlete, but I'll defer to CMob on that.

little koots actually chose his worst sport which was basketball as the sport he would play in college...his next best sport was football which seemed to be full of injuries this last year that he played through...but i would say his best sport by far was baseball but he just didnt seem to have the drive to want to play that sport

from what i understand melson is a pretty good baseball player and there is a chance that might be the only sport he plays next year

hanks is a solid football player but injuries at the end of his last two football seasons prevented him from playin hoops...i have never seen him in action on the court

ramey is just a crazy man and i like his style in both sports...he is a human bowling ball

Basketball/Baseball players

Willy, you beat me to the punch.

Tyler Kaus - GAC
Mike DesLauriers - GAC

Foster – HAM
Sam Wiener – HAM

Lonnie Robinson –UST

Football/Baseball players

The Carr brothers from Bethel, & the Schumacher brothers from CORD.

At this point I would say the player that excelled the most at either of his 2 sports was Brian Schumacher - 2-time league football MVP.

In hoops, the jury is still out, but I guess I would give the slightest nod to Sam Wiener.  By the time their careers are finished, Robinson & or DesLauriers could end up being the best hooper out of this group I named.

In baseball, DesLauriers is probably first & Robinson a close second.

****************
CON - By the way, a week or so ago we were discussing how players ended up at the schools they do.  If you don't mind, being a "cities" guy, why did you select CORD?

EDIT- Nites, I forgot all about the Carleton guys.  I'll revise my basketball rankings & go with Z. Johnson as the best hooper out of the 2- sport players.  Melson was quite the baseball player in high school.  I didn't know he was playing in college.

Speaking of DeLo, would this be him:

DRAKE:

I was in the cobber circle pre-birth.  both my parents, several aunts and uncles, many cousins, grandparents, great aunts and uncles, etc...all wore the maroon and gold.

basketball didn't play a big role in the decision.  i wanted to play basketball in college but if i had to make a purely basketball-based decision, i may have chosen another school.  playing with bjorklund in hs got me rather close to that family.  it would have been fun to play for his dad.

if i would have wanted to push myself i would've tried ndsu, und, or scsu.  i preferred a laid back approach to collegiate athletics.

Drake & Sum, thanks for the welcome to the Karma Knights. Oh, the power! haha. And yes, Obi-Wan, I shall use the power of the force wisely.

Isaac Rosefelt was named as one of the 60 participants for the Collegiate Basketball Invitational today, a showcase for D2, D3 and NAIA players. You might recall, from when the event was touched on a few months ago, that its a small division version of the NBAs Portsmouth Invitational-with a team tournament and all-star game to audition and showcase talent. The All Star game will be on ESPNU, apparently, so that will be some nice exposure. And, according to the website, they expect a large number of scouts from leagues within the states and overseas. Anyway, its the inaugural event, so who knows what will come from it, but hopefully it will be a good opportunity for Ike to find out his chances of continuing his playing career overseas. Congratulations to him.

Nice show case for Ike. He was selected to play in the inaugural Collegiate Basketball Invitational all star series. One of only 7 Dlll players invited and one of only 3 Minnesota players playing.

From the Senile One...

It doesn't appear that new Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith is going to keep any of the coaching staff that finished the past season. He already has hired two assistants in Ron Jirsa, whose last job was head coach at Marshall, and Saul Smith, his son. Saul was an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech last year.

Oh boy...my feelings for Saul are like Keating on steroids. This might not be as good as I first thought...

The CBI has eight from D-III, actually. Illinois Wesleyan's Zach Freeman, Wooster's Tom Port, Mount St. Mary's Mike Hoyt, Baldwin-Wallace's Tori Davis, Kerry Gibson from UW-Oshkosh, Virginia Wesleyan's Brandon Adair, Otterbein's Tyler Ousley and Isaac Rosefelt of St. Thomas each made teams.
