From the Senile One...

It doesn't appear that new Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith is going to keep any of the coaching staff that finished the past season. He already has hired two assistants in Ron Jirsa, whose last job was head coach at Marshall, and Saul Smith, his son. Saul was an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech last year.

Oh boy...my feelings for Saul are like Keating on steroids. This might not be as good as I first thought...

New Gophers men's basketball assistant Saul Smith, 28, on the energy he has for the job: "I'm going to be everywhere, all the high schools, all the AAU tournaments. People are going to get tired of seeing me."

Like you I'm sure, Willy, I already am :(

Nice avatar Sum!  The burger would go nicely with my avatar's namesake.  ;D

In the pursuit of athletics in its highest form and the high art of the theatre, Drake Palmer & Associates is pleased to present the following Public Service announcement from the most recent issue of the Highland Villager: ;)

The Baron, a new comedy by Cory McLeod featuring former pro wrestler Jim "the Baron" Von Raschke as himself, will be performed April 14 through May 20 at the History Theater, 30 E. 10th Street.  Ron Peluso and Steve Moulds direct a cast featuring actors in the roles of Raschke's contemporaries.  For show times and tickets, call 651-292-4323.

And you're sick of....what? Enthusiasm? Pride in the job? Excitement to build the program?

The previous Gopher regime was filled with a bunch of losers who couldn't recruit anybody worth their salt....who were hardly visible around the state and had buildt no relationships with anybody, and here you and a few of your fair-weathered, blonde-balding friends think it's now cool to knock the energy the new coaching staff has?

Holy sh__ man, get a life!

;)

No problem, I figured as much since we posted within seconds of each other.

I'm a little nervous, but I'm hoping the new coaching staff is the shot in the arm the Gopher program needed.

funbb - If Saul is twice as good at recruiting as he was at playing, he'll still be the worst in the Big Ten. Dude could have been the worst starting PG the SEC has ever seen, with the fact his dad was the coach only adding fuel to the fire. I was a bit of a Kentucky fan growing (I was born at Fort Knox), but I haven't cheered for them since he first started getting time.

I'm excited for the change of direction, but extremely leery of his hiring. In fact, I'd love to see his job application. I'm guessing that writing "Tubby's son" was enough to get him the gig, just as it got him a scholie at UK. If you couldn't tell, Saul is near the top of my list for least favorite players of all-time.

Drake - The Baron actually lives in Wabasha these days. There's a chance I'll be doing a story on him, if I can find the time between Madden seasons :)

sumander - If you want the full story on Lakeville South, scroll back some pages. We ranted about them for awhile in full detail.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Thanks Drake, I figured you would enjoy that. I suspect most of the other posters have not been introduced to J. Wellington Wimpy!

I believe the Baron resides in my neck of the woods, Lake George, MN!

I am a little leary about the nepotism displayed by Tubby as well. But hope springs eternal in the hearts of men!

Thanks Willie, I thought that was the case, but was in fact too lazy to do that!

Sum - I'm working on another PSA which is more as they say in video game/tv rating parlance - TV MA but in the meantime...

I think Willy's post from back then more or less summed up the general sentiment.  Also, during the state tournament Lakeville South was flying around in living color for a number of posters to see.  I think Willy, Cmob & I were commenting on &* cough, ahem, their style of play.

cmob - From what I've heard, coach Addington got run out of office after South got beat in OT by Owatonna (rematch of this game for the section title, BTW) on a banked 3 at the buzzer by Lundberg, the SG going to Northern Iowa next year.

Crushing loss, right? Apparently Addington goes into the lockerroom afterwards and Soule (and others, tho he was the ringleader from what I've heard) is smiling and joking around like they just won, setting the coach off. The discussion got heated and the young AD stepped in before the next game and suspended Addington, essentially choosing football over integrity.

The Rochester paper did a piece on it when it happened (Addington's dad is the former AD for Rochester and was helping his son out.) He refused to throw dirt or really comment on what happened, which makes me think he was too good for the job in the first place.

DP - Soule is good player, which makes it even tougher to stomach. His parents also laughed at the trashtalk, complaining and cheap forearm shivers. I enjoy seeing these type of people fail at life  >:(

that made me chuckle.

it also made me curious about father/son combos (coach/coach, coach/player, player/player, etc)...what son's have been disappointments and which have capitalized on their genetics? Any MIAC legends?

Ewing Jr. seems to be holding his own, but has some big shoes to fill.
Walton Jr. is trying to make daddy proud.

One success I know for sure is Mario Chalmers. his dad was his HS coach, and is an assistant at Kansas.

These are just the one's that popped into my head right away.

Pat Coleman

Lefty Driesell's son was an average to mediocre D-III coach at Marymount and parlayed that into an assistant's job at Georgetown under Craig Esherick, who was fired the next year. After a year or two in the HS ranks he somehow got an assistant's job at Maryland.
