He will redshirt next year to familiarize him with the offense.

a whole year to learn an offense? he should be studing it up now...but it is probably just an excuse to red shirt him

A little more info on DeRock's transfer:

He will redshirt next year to familiarize him with the offense. The coach was quoted to say that he will have an immediate impact on the perimeter game for the Mustangs in two years.

He joins Belle Plaine's Trent Carlson and Fosston's Josh Roysland (Kelly's brother).

If I am not mistaken Roysland is transferring from Fergus Falls Community College.

I, for one will certainly miss watching DeRock, but what about players coming into Hamline, rather than leaving?

DeRock was a great ball player and I invisioned him making a run at MIAC POY in two years if not next year! To bad for the Pip squeeks.

Sum - did you ever get a chance to see Roysland play at Fergus?

Drake, I did not have an opportunity to see FFCC play last year. After I posted I tried to find some statistics about the team. I couldn't find any box scores, but I don't think he ever saw too much court time. On the FF website they have numerous game summaries. I did not see Roysland's name mentioned in any of them.

I did have an opportunity last year to see one of the Mustang's red shirt Frosh. 6'7" Taylor Huseby from Pelican Rapids. I think he will be a real nice player for them. I believe Watch might have more insight on Mr. Huseby.

BTW, Frank the Tank in his St. Cloud Times blog is working on FB, BB recruiting information for SJU.

In radical news from the future.  After redshirting for a year, DeRock decides he liked the MIAC better and comes back to lead Auggie Tech to the conference title.

I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

In recruiting news, another BIG MIAC recruit is headed to the Division II level.   Nate Birr, a 6-3 guard from St. Thomas Academy has announced that he has verbally committed to play basketball at Saint Michael's College, located in Colchester, Vermont, this fall.  I know that Birr was strongly considering the Johnnies and Pipers.  Oh well.

I have also heard that Bethel has a pair of 6-8 players coming in this year.  One I believe is from Lakeville and the other from somewhere else down south.  With those two and Peter Rolando (6-7) and Mike Moberg (6-8) that's a pretty big front line for the Royals!

Sum -after I posted my question for you, I read the Southwest State recruiting article & found that Roysland apparently redshirted at Fergus Falls last year.

Taylor Huseby was a nice player at Pelican Rapids.

Local - If what you posted is correct,  Nate Birr will be attending the same college, St. Michael, that UST's Mike Keating attended for a couple of years.

How are things at hamline?

I'm missing something....why would you go to a JUCO and redshirt then transfer to another school? Does that seem strange?

According to the SW state article, Roysland was injured last year.

Huseby was solid at PR. They had one of the toughest sections in the state in 2A the past few years. Huseby needs to put on some muscle but he definetly has the skill to be a solid ball player at SWST

I liken the Pipers situation to the Vikes with Greenway. While Erik Gusaas was not injured, he spent a year figuring out how to play collegiate basketball. Next season, it will be like having a first-round pick in the lineup.

In case you didn't notice, a little birdie says Shooter doesn't know his A to Z's.

"Still, the Gophers are said to be making genuine progress in their pursuit of the 6-foot-4, 200-pounder, whose finalists at this point are, in alphabetical order, Florida, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State. If new Gophers coach Tim Brewster could land Floyd, it would be a major recruiting triumph."

An NCAA men's basketball rules committee Thursday approved a change that would move the three-point line back - from 19 feet, 9 inches to 20-9 - in 2008. The proposal needs the approval of one more committee this month before it is enacted.

Chairman Larry Keating said the committee considered two proposals. The other would have moved the line to 20-6, the same distance as international three-pointers. Both are shorter than the NBA line, which is 23-9 at the top of the key and 22-0 at its shortest point in the baseline corners.

The new rule would be adopted by all three college divisions, and Keating expects the measure to pass in three weeks.
