From SC Times:

QuoteMIAC revamps web site

Users of the MIAC's official web site (www.miac-online.org) soon will notice some major changes. The conference is working with an outside design company to revamp the site and expects to unveil the changes sometime next month.

"We'll have a whole new layout," said MIAC assistant executive director Matt Ten Haken, who is overseeing the project. "It should make it easier to function for fans, administrators and coaches. We'll have a lot of the same features we have now. But it will be more modern with more photos and things like that."

Ten Haken said the changes should help the conference's sports information directors access information.

"There will be a lot of new administrative functions the average fan won't see, but it will be nice for SIDs and coaches," Ten Haken said. "They'll be able to log into secure areas and get information. They'll be able to submit all-conference and player-of-the-week nominations online."

There will also be a few new wrinkles for the general public as well.

"We'll be adding a calendar function on the right-hand side of the page that will list all the games that day in all our sports," Ten Haken said. "We'll have photos attached to each story. There will be things like pulldown standings, schedules and results."

The conference is aiming to have the new site up-and-running by August 1st. But that is not a definite date.

"It could be beyond our control," Ten Haken said. "It depends on the designers and how long it takes them to get stuff done. So we're just saying sometime next month for sure."

Gusties hire new assistant!

From the Winona Daily....

Now, the question is, will Hanson REALLY let him coach and make decisions? If so, my sources tell me "that would be a huge change from the past".....plus they also say "that being he's taken over the Gustie BB Camps from Bob Erdman, that he's too busy counting all his money and has no interest to recruit."

Of course, it's quite apparent he's done a lousy job of recruiting the last 2-3 years anyway and any guards worth a hoot won't play at Gustavus. Guards are NEVER developed under Hanson and if anyone might question that statement, consider the lack of productivity from the guards in recent years.

Besides, wasn't it time to divert a little attention away from Barry Wohler and Hamline?

Gee, Woody.  Doing a little Wonka fishing?

Willy, are you biting today or are you back to lurking in the weeds after being speared for your Wohler opinions?

Woody does! Best reports though are that he seems to be of great character. (now that would be a huge change from last year's collection of mutts, wouldn't it?)

I'd like to hear Woody's definition of coaching freedom before I respond. But I *will* respond  :-*
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

While I'm waiting...

USTbum, did you happen to catch the Wolves summer league opener tonight? Our boy, Mateen Cleaves, led the team to an 85-83 win with 12 points and clutch defense.

McHale *NEEDS* to find a way to keep him on board as the 6th PG...or else let him challenge Mad Dog for the role of lead cheerleader. He just wins, baby!

Freedom to coach?

Lets first agree that the head coach always has the final say, as it should be. However, when you surround yourself with capable assistant coaches (and you do hire them believing their capable, right?), then you ought to let them have input and actually listen to what they have to say. Say what you, Mr. Wonka, but according to sources that I know, Hanson really doesn't listen or care what others think. He may put on a front that he does, but bottom line, he really doesn't. People think that to him, assistant coaches are just "figureheads" and he thinks he's so damn intelligent, that nobody knows anything about the game except him.

If a head coach really don't want input from his assistants, then supplement your staff with a bunch of grad assistant stiffs and make them your puppets.

Hanson is an egotistical sort who believes "it's all about him." I don't know you, Mr. Wonka, but you obviously played for this guy and will defend him to the end. That's fine. However, I have to believe you're in that corner alone. Most guys (friends, coaches) I know say his former players can't stand him because of the way he treated them, that it wasn't any fun playing for him and they were glad to get out. And, I have to believe the assistant coaches feel the same way.

Is that what D-III is all about? I don't think so.

And by the way, regarding Hanson's lack of recruiting proficiency recently? The Gusties will be horrible this year. They may survive the Top 6 for the playoffs, but that's only because the entire league will be way down this year and Bethel will walk away with the conference and playoff championships.

Now, have at me Mr. Wonka. I'm attending national summer tournaments and I need a little diversion from the games!

Maybe I've missed it, but do we know what Woody's credentials are regarding this topic, compared to Willy Wonka's? Wonka has the upper hand in my mind.

concordia of the north

here's my bit:

i did not play at gustavus and the longest conversation i've had with coach hanson was approx 30 seconds after a game in my senior year.  however, from what I see of him on the sidelines and his team on the floor, and from what I hear around the league he is a winner a competitor and a hell of a smart man (when it comes to basketball, anyway).

I would imagine that the kids that come out of that program with ill feelings are exactly the kind of kids that need a good spanking.  i had the good fortune to play for a coach in high school who was something like this.  the kids that commit to the team and the system and learn how to respect an authority figure walk away with not only respect, but a good deal of affection for that coach.  the kids that think they're smart and talented enough walk away thinking they've just encountered a fascist.  i know which kid i'd rather have people think i was.

My beef with that logic is why you would have so many guys in suits sitting on the bench if you just wanted puppets? Correct me if I'm wrong please, but the last time I watched Gustavus I thought they had at least 4...

What, I take a little holiday break & return to this mini-mayhem?  From the sounds of it, it seems like the season is right around the corner rather than another 4 months away.  I like it.

Help - someone pick me up off the office floor.  I accidentally dragged my keyboard & monitor down on top of me after reading Pat's comments.   Pat, you're coming to Willy's defense?   :o ;D

I find it interesting that the Gusties have yet to post a story on their website on the hiring of Josh Drinkall, but still have the story up regarding Aaron Kahl's move to Dakota Wesleyan.  I posted about Drinkall 3 weeks ago, 6/18 & at the time they didn't even have his bio posted.  And as of today, they still don't have an article posted announcing the hiring of Drinkall.

Sounds like you've got a bit of a GAC ax to grind there Woody.  Are you any relation to Funbballer?  ;)  I will admit that I have heard similar comments passed along to high school guards considering Gustavus.  Something along the lines of - "if you ever want to dribble the ball again or during your college career, I'd consider another school other than Gustavus."  With that being said, it's a little difficult to knock their results.  Here are a few highlights:

(7) MIAC playoff championships
(6) NCAA Sweet 16s
(3) Elite Eights
(1) National championship finalist

But I've said my piece, I think I'll sit back & watch this one unfold.  This could be a "goodun." I'm still recovering from my Wohler beatdown.  ;D

Good luck Woody, Last Word is a relentless, articulate, impassioned spokesman for all things black & gold & GAC-like.  ;)
