Best movie of the summer so far. Then again, I was a huge fan of the show growing up. BTW, Megan Fox is hot.

I also heard that G.I. Joe might be in the works. Who will play Snake Eyes?

according to some redwood falls folks, bonebright is a good kid, plays hard, goes to the hoop a lot, nice rebounder, slow afoot, gets into foul trouble frequently trying to block shots etc., 47% free throw shooter!!  but was the most valuable player on his team because he worked so hard and came to play for the big games.  he didn't get a chance to shoot much the last two years because they had two other players who took much of that responsibility upon themselves.  with some coaching in college and learning some of the nuances of the college game, the feeling is that he could contribute at this level at some point.  they did wonder WHERE on the floor he would play in college.
they were not aware of as much about schwarz from new ulm cathedral, although they had seen him play a couple of times during tournaments. similar size and potential;  more of a shooting threat that bonebright perhaps.

Thanks for the info Superfan! Appreciate it.

Sounds like he will take the route of a typical Johnnie recruit and spend a year or so on the JV.

From Shooter's column yesterday:

The job hasn't even been posted, but Hamline University has received about 50 calls from potential candidates seeking the school's men's basketball coaching position.

On the GI Joe note, Mark Wahlberg is supposed to play Duke. No Snake Eyes casting yet. But the movie is supposed to come out in 2009. Oh and because of the international market involved, the movie might not even be called GI Joe!

The "Admin" is moving very slow, if at all. Guess there's no hurry, in their minds anyway.

Some coaches that are very qualified for the job, are not applying.....they feel it's a dead-end job. Not sure what they entirely mean by that, but that's the scuttle butt.

From the St. Cloud Daily Planet today a conversation with Dan O'Brien . Sounds like they hope to have a bb coach on board by mid August.

Is it just me but did Dan O'Brien sound defensive in that article?  I did notice he mentioned that 8-letter "S" word.   ;D Or maybe he was just putting a PR spin on the situation. But if you're in his spot what can you do? ::) ;)

I would agree this quote sounds pretty defensive:

"(Our turnover) lately has been more of a timing thing. Our goal is to have the same coaches in place, but if it's not in their best interests or in the best interests of the program, then we have to make a change. And when you make a change, you're always trying to better yourself. That's what we're trying to do now."

Which S word? Surprise or softball or what? I guess I didn't immediately catch on.

According to our board curmudgeon (initials - W.W., L.W, or just Word) – Barry Wohler's resignation from Hamline was sniff –"newsworthy, but hardly a surpr--- ."  I can't actually write the word or WW threatened bodily harm or to launch a surp---- attack against me.  ;D

The Hamline AD was quoted as saying he was surpri---ed by Wohlers' resignation. Hmmpph. (Not really)

When all is said & done, I think Wonka & I are on the same side of this issue & we're quibbling over semantics - surprise, or shock.  I was surprised, but not shocked at Wohler's' resignation & if truth be told, I think that's how Wonka really felt as well.

For me, the bigger question about Hamline is this - why is everyone leaving Hamline?  From the sounds of it, the St. Cloud reporter wasn't coming in high & inside with heat, but lobbed up a batting practice type fastball.  There have been too many coaching departures from Hamline to not raise a red flag.

By the way –does anyone know what happened to former Pipes football coach Paul Miller?

Another slow news week.  ::)

I just noticed that the conference has announced the Academic All-Conference teams for each winter sport.  Of the 23 men's basketball winners, 6 were from Gustavus, 4 from the Johnnies and 3 from the Tommies.  Every school was represented minus St. Mary's.  I believe an athlete must have a 3.5 GPA to be awarded this honor.

I also read that Jim Rubbelke, former Assistant Head Coach at Concordia University (St. Paul), has been named Head Coach of the Hamline University Softball team.  Looks like Dan O'Brien has kept it "in the family" again.  Does anyone know if Jim is related to the Concordia A.D.  ???

As for the vacant basketball job in Piper land, word is the President and a few other notables will meet this week to discuss whether or not to open the job up and conduct a "national search" to replace Coach Wohler.   The smart money still appears to be on Piper Ass't coach Brady Larson.

Willy Wonka

A former Hamline player told me not to discount Jim Hayes from the Hamline coaching discussion. He's an alum who starred there back in the day and served as assistant coach for 10 years before being passed over (All but ignored, from what I'm told) for Wohler for the top spot. Heck, the Carlie web site says Hayes and family still reside in St. Paul...though we all know how reliable the CAR SID is ::)

After serving at Carleton for the last 3 years, I've got to imagine the former Mayo Spartan has the pedigree and contacts to make Hamline relevant again, though even the former player admitted expecting any coach to turn HU into GAC or UST in three years is ridiculous. Aim small, miss small :)
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

I would love for Jimmy Hayes to get the job. He is a good recruiter, a good defensive coach and a coach players like to play for. Sounds like a good choice to me.
