BET34, Any truth to the rumor Peter Rolando will not be returning to school at Bethel this fall? ???

Question for the board???

Which sport do the best athletes come from?

Great update B34!

Great question too.  My biased opinion says basketball.  Combination of speed, agility, strength and great instincts/intelligence required really cater to a great athlete.

Given all sports require slightly different skill sets which makes it hard to compare.  (Marathon runner vs. power lifter) So that's why I went with all-around athlete.

I think strong arguments could be made for hockey players, and more than a few football postions.

Bet34 - good to see you're still around.  I'm with Snow, it's tough to argue against a hooper in terms of best athlete.

Sum brings up a good question regarding Peter Rolando.  Last year he provided some decent minutes to give Moberg a breather & pick up some fouls. It'll be fun to watch Bethel this year as I'm sure they'll enter the season as one of the pre-season favorites to win the title.  It's also nice to hear Max Holmgren will be back.  I like his potential a lot & think he could eventually be a much better player than Matt Frederickson.  A week or so ago when Kneez was describing that Etheridge kid who is transferring to SJU I thought of Holmgren - one of those skinny, strong, wiry players that can just explode on the court.

How are the rest of the Royals looking  – did Jeff Reck get serious about his conditioning this summer? I would think he'd be taking Meadowcroft's spot in the lineup.  If, he's in shape he could make a strong Bethel team even tougher this year.

Sum - sadly to say, you heard right in regards to Rolando not being eligible for the beginning of the season.  That is a huge loss for BU... :'(

They will now be looking to Matt (don't know his last name), from White Bear Lake, who is about 6-9 215-220lbs.  He will be a freshmen this year, but he is a pretty good size with a lot of potential.  White Bear's coach played him at the high post for some dumb reason last yr and he didn't do to much there.  Averaged right around 13 pts a game last year and with that height and strength, he should have averaged a lot more than that.  He has a great nose for the ball and has decent court vision when he gets it down low, but definitely needs to learn some post up moves with his back to the basket.  Doesn't really have any from what I have seen up to this point.  Can play some decent post defense as he is very long and decently strong, and can rebound well.

With the loss of Rolo, it is huge that Moberg has been getting into great shape this summer.  He is going to need to play 30-33 mins a game for BU to be successful this year.  And being in better shape I believe will help him stay out of foul trouble where a lot of his troubles in that area last year I believe came from lazy fouls.  I think teams are going to try exploit the fact that they will not be deep at the post position and go at Moberg hard and often early in games to see if they can't get him in foul trouble.

Snow – as I am also bias towards basketball, I agree with you 100%...the people I have been debating with are trying to say that Hockey players are more athletic because they do practically the same thing as basketball players as far as handing the puck, they have to play both offense and defense, more physical, need to have great hand eye coordination, ect...except hockey players are on ICE!  I am sorry, but then you practically have to say that white people are more athletic than black people, as hockey is predominately white and basketball is now predominately black, and that is one debate you could never win...I would say that some certain football positions as you pointed out are more of a debate than hockey players are...anyways, thanks for your opinion, I always have loved this debate.  Anybody else want to chime in??

Drake – I really like Holmgren.  I think by next year after Timmy graduates, he will take over that spot and average around the 17 point range by is Sophomore year.  He has the strength and the athletic ability to be a very great player in this league and contend for the MVP by his Junior and Senior years.  I really think he will shoot around the 45% mark from downtown this year and be a huge spark off the bench.  I am excited to see him develop.

As far as Reck goes, I haven't seen him yet this summer.  He just got married last weekend so I am sure he has been pretty preoccupied with that.  I would guess that he hasn't done much to get in shape this summer.  I hope I am wrong, but he hasn't done anything over the last 3 off seasons, what is going to motivate him to do so this past off season.  I hope knowing that Bethel has a shot to make the tourney this year would motivate him enough, but I wouldn't bet on it and I love to gamble.  Anyways, Laugen has been working out a lot and is looking good.  He has really been working on his 3 point shot and his jumper and hopefully can be deadly this year when left open.  He is going to have a lot of open looks in the corner with all the defenses needing to focus on Timmy and Moberg down Low.  He loves the game, so he is always working out and in the gym.  A lot of the players are still away, and I will have much more updates over the next month or so as open gyms start back up and players start moving back on campus.

Well, enough about BU, anyone have any info on how St. Mary's, Mac, or any other of the teams that didn't make playoffs the last couple of years are looking??  Are there going to be any big surprises this season??  Or is it going to be the GAC, ST THOMAS, ST JOHNS, BETHEL, then Olaf most likely, and the rest fighting for one again type year.

oh yea...one more thing, Go Vikings!  10-6???  Making the playoffs as the Wild Card???  That is my prediction anyways!!  And remember, I am a realist...which out of the dictionary means: somebody who only considers things as they are or appear to be, and avoids ideals and abstractions  So in another words...it is a fact ;D

"Woody - For not caring about the Gusties or coaching staff, you sure seem to know alot about their recruits this year"

Drake.....was only reporting some rumors I got from one of the MIAC rival coaches. I absolutely know nothing about their recruiting.

Now, I also mentioned the kid from Ellsworth going to Auggie, right? But similarly, this info was also given me by another coach.

Just reporting what I stumble upon.........!!!!

And......I'll say it again. Auggies make the playoffs and BU will win both the conference and the post season tourney!!

hoopmaster

With your argument on best athlete it all depends on what you are looking for.  What defines athlete?  Is it hand/eye coordination?  Speed, quickness, leaping ability, and strength?  I've always said that gymnasts are some of the best athletes.  They are strong, fast, and have good leaping ability.  However, you don't need a lot of hand/eye coordination.  Hockey and basketball are similar.  I don't like hockey at all but I respect it.  Some of the moves etc. they make while skating is impressive.  But they don't have the in air acrobatics that hoops players have.

BIG RUMOR.......has it the two finalists for the HU job are:

Nelson Whitmore - Head Coach at SUNY-Brockport

Jim Hayes - ass't coach at Carleton

A decision could come as soon as Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

Good sleuthing, +K!  Here's a little info...Whitmore Bio

Since Whitmore is a native easterner, I wonder what would prompt a potential cross country job transfer to St. Paul, MN?  Especially in light of many posters' contention on this board that Hamline doesn't adequately pay their coaching staff.  ::) ;)

...Upon further review – if Hamline lands this Nelson Whitmore as coach they may have acquired a nice little gem.  His Brockport State team was an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney in 2007 & came up just short in the Elite Eight against Wooster College from advancing to the final 4 this year.

Based on their game scores, Brockport seems to favor an uptempo style which would be a noticeable contrast to more traditional MIAC style ball.

Also, if I'm reading his bio correctly, his Brockport teams have qualified for the NCAA tourney 4 times since 2000.  I'd guess Whitmore would be 36-37 YO based on his college graduation date and might still be an affordable D3 college coach.  I would also guess 60-80k (?) annual salary goes alot further in MN than in NY.  Or did Hamline decide to sweeten the coaching pot for him or the other coaching finalists?  Hmmm, interesting.

Bringing back some memories... when I was with UST when we went against Brockport State in 2003 .

They were definitely a running team. Here is the box score, note the 31 combine turnovers and 15 steals. http://www.tommiesports.com/mbb/stats/archives/2003-04/11-22MB.HTM

And if I recall the coach was quite vocal, should be right at home at HU...and maybe can give Koz a run for the money.

For further enjoyment a couple articles from USTs website.

i would say the best all around athletes are male gymnastic dudes...think about the elegance they perform in their floor routine...and think about all the masculinity and testosterone that is pumped into the flips they pull off when they are being male cheerleaders in the fall for football games

I am having quite a productive day at work today.  Here is a very SUBJECTIVE analysis of various athletics and means of measuring athleticism.  I am open to feedback.  Add 1 pt for rank (1st =1, 12th=12) Lowest score is then most athletic.

What year did you graduate from college Pat?  According to Whitmore's biography he graduated in 1992.
